Each vehicle has a weight, grip, boost power, and boost longevity stat. Players can unlock four stock colors, and a special design for each vehicle. As you unlock stars by racing, you can trade them in for new vehicles, as well as other goodies.

It doesn't matter if you come in first (even though it sure helps) or last. What matters in Excitebots is collecting the most stars. Crash into another racer at high speeds? Get some stars. Get some big air? Get some stars. Twirl on a giant red bar? Get some stars. Kick a giant soccer ball into the goal? Get some stars. Make a sandwich while in mid air? Get some major stars.
ExciteBots is about performing tricks, and scoring in micro games than actual racing. Performing stunts not only collects the players stars, but also gives them boosts to perform even bigger tricks, and move up even further in the race. While finishing first will not guarantee you a win, the higher you finish in the competition, the more bonus stars you receive.

Air: Simply go off a big jump. For even bigger air, tilt the remote towards yourself right before you leave the ramp.
Spins: After you go off a ramp, hold 1 and any button on the D-pad and turn a little to one side, then turn a lot in the opposite direction while still holding the buttons. Your bot will spin with so much EXCITEEEE.
Drifting: Turn for a really long time.
Bot Smash: Crash into a vehicle at high speeds.
Tree run: Drive through a crowded area with trees.
Rings: Jump through rings.
Soccer: Drive into the soccer ball and attempt to hit it into the goal.
Bowling: Drive through the pins and attempt to get a strike.
Darts: Line up your bot and let the dart fly. Try to hit bulls-eye in the distance.
Throwing pies: Hit the clown in the face with a pie by throwing it at just the right angle
and speed.
Making sandwiches: Drive through the ingredients in the proper order to make a delicious sandwich.
Butterfly rescue: Rescue floating butterflies in the sky.
Fishing: Hit "A" at the right time to catch a GREAT FISH.
Baseball batting Hit "A" at the right time to get a HOME RUN.
Tambourine: Complete the beat by hitting "A" twice to get a NICE TAMBOURINE.
Red bars: Swing your remote in motion with your bot to get a SUPER RED BAR.
Yellow bars: Move your controller forward at the right time to get a SUPER BAR RELEASE.
