one thing dont like about anime is shortcuts and the cheapness...any anime where the animation looks really good?? movies please, if you say a tv show probably wont watch it btw and dont give a big list of like 20 or 30 or I think you not picking the best stuff

stuff like this I dont like

The cost-cutting techniques used to mass-produce cartoons on a low budget included:

* cels and sequences of cels were re-used over and over again—animators only had to draw a character walking once.
* characters are split up into different levels: only portions of a character, such as the mouth or an arm, would be animated on top of a static cel.
* clever choice of camera angles and editing
* use of camera techniques such as panning to suggest movement
* cel reversal (simply using a mirror image of the cell to represent the opposite angle). Many cartoon characters are drawn symmetrically to expedite this technique.
* the visual elements were made subsidiary to audio elements, so that verbal humor and voice talent became more important factors for success ("talking heads")
* Silhouette: This avoids having to keep track of shading on an animated character or object.
* sliding a cel across a background to suggest movement. This is frequently easy to spot as glare, dust and scratches on the cell are also clearly visible (more so in digital cleanups of older cartoons).

Still to this day Akira looks pretty good. Paprika is worth a try too.

..and since that's my favorite anime, I agree with Blader5489 and suggest the Rurouni Kenshin OAVs as well. P

The Naruto vs Sasuke fight is animated / choreographed really well.

Who was in charge of that episode by the way? It was light years above the rest of the series.

If by "real impressive animation" you are not only meaning super detailled, movie like but also "so crazy I'm shitting bricks from my eyeballs" :

Dead Leaves (Gurren Lagann fans should check this out, its directed by the guy who did the GL finale. It's a 40 minutes OAV.

kemonozume1dl6.jpg

Kemonozume (13eps series) and pretty much every stuff studio 4C puts out.

Typically anime movies are the ones with amazing animation because of the high budgets.
-Akira
-Oh My Goddess: The Movie
-Metropolis
-Paprika
-The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
-Anything from Studio Ghibli

Anime TV shows for the most part are cheap animation, with some exceptions.

Karas: The Prophecy has amazing animation for the sole reason that it's the only 2D/3D hyrbid that actually looks amazing and not cheap as hell.

I think it's called "3 Meters per second" or something like that.

It's something you watch just because it's so darned purdy.

I don't know much about Anime, but that scene in Kill Bill was easily the best Anime scene I've seen animations wise.

So fucking awesome, and probably the best scene out of the entirety of both moves for me :D

Does anyone know who was responsible for this scene? Is there anymore Anime like this? Because of this scene I watched Samurai Champloo and then Cowboy Beebop, but I've never seen any other Anime series that comes anywhere near close to the awesomeness of these two series.

Even Anime movies' budget is small compared to what we put out here. The animation quality is also quite worse.

Why should creativity be discouraged? Most of the "cost-cutting" techniques you criticize are able to create sequences that create a sensation of energy and movement more intense and interesting than anything full-animation has been able to achieve. The idea that animation is about the "illusion of life" and as such should keep uniqueness to a minimum since it "can take the audience out of the experience" is outdated and not very effective. The important thing about animation is to create authentic emotion, that's all there is to it.

An example of "short-cuts" being used as a viable medium of expression:

Sure, but the top budget stuff like Metropolis, Akira, and Studio Ghibi Films have amazing animation with the (comparatively) small budgets they have.

a lot of the recent Miyazaki movies have had impressive animation.

Also, Satoshi Kon's movies all have a very appealing artistic quality.

Akira is still impressive.

I'll go with Studio 4C

A few you've probably/may already scene
-Did Linkin Park's "Breaking The Habit"
-"Beyond" from the animation, The one with the kids who found the glitch in the abandoned house
-Two of the Gotham Knight's are done by them

Recommendations
-All Amazing Nuts, all Ova's. 4 I believe
-Genius Party/Beyond
-Tekkon...something.

From Ghibli movies the newer Miyazaki films (Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl) have incredible animation. Oh and Porco Rosso has pretty damn good plane animation.

So is this like the gaming side where people are listing their favourite anime irrespective of whether it answers OP's question. Or are all these animes worth checking out?

I'd say most of what's been mentioned untill now definitely has quality of animations that are (way) above average stuff. If it's all worth checking out.. Probably not, since it's already a pretty diverse list :).

Ren & Stimpy fits what you're looking for perfectly (save for it's American and a TV series). http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2026885/the_top_5_ren_and_stimpy_moments_of_all_time/

Here's John K's Blog too. He feels the same way you do.

edit: Whoops! You're looking for anime, not just animation! :lol

Good luck then. From my experience, it's impossible to find any anime to fit the guidelines you've made.

I'm not trying to apologize for anime's animation quality, but the lack of extreme movement is part of what it is; it makes it much more like the source material, as unlike Western series, almost all anime is based on manga. (Obviously not all of it)
