It took Activision Blizzard almost half the year to do it, but the huge US publisher has finally scored its first All Formats No1 of 2009.

Sales of ‘Prototype’ are down 20% in its 2nd week of release, but with sales of last week’s No1 ‘The Sims 3’ falling by 49% , ‘Prototype’ pushes the popular PC phenomenon down to No2. Xbox 360 remains the dominant format for Activision Blizzard’s new open-world action title, Microsoft’s format accounting for 61% of sales, PS3 36% and PC 3%. ‘Wii Fit’ (-12%) climbs one place, skipping back into the Top 3 for the first time since it was deposed from the No1 spot over 4 weeks ago. The Ghostbusters film might be 25 years old, but a debut at No4 for the new Sony-published video game proves that it’s still a well-loved franchise. ‘Ghostbusters: The Video Game’ (98% PS3 & 2% PS2) debuts one place higher than Sony’s previous PS3 title ‘Infamous’ which was a new entry at No5 four weeks ago.

The price drop 2 weeks ago on ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ is still in effect, boosting sales by 59% this week as it jumps from No7 to No5, leaping ahead of THQ’s ‘Red Faction: Guerrilla’ (-46%) and ‘UFC 2009: Undisputed’ (-28%). Red Faction drops 3 places to No6, while UFC slips 2 places to No7. The bottom end of the All Formats Top 10 has a sporty theme with ‘EA Sports Active’ (-27%) down 2 places to No8, while Sega’s Virtua Tennis 2009’ (+33%) pops back into the Top 10, up 2 places to No9, helped by the release of the Wii MotionPlus compatible version. With Wimbledon starting this week EA’s ‘Grand Slam Tennis’ volleys its way into the Top 10, up 3 places to No10. Launched 2 weeks ago as the UK’s first Wii MotionPlus compatible title, sales this week are up 47%, more than double that of Virtua Tennis 2009 on Wii. There is also a strong second week for ‘Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings’ (+158%) which leaps from No32 to No13, while 505 Games have this week’s only other Top 40 new release with ‘ArmA II’ at No19.

‘Ghostbusters: The Video Game’ (98% PS3 & 2% PS2) debuts one place higher than Sony’s previous PS3 title ‘Infamous’ which was a new entry at No5 four weeks ago.
I was going to say that's a good sign re: PS3 adoption over PS2, but then realised that week 1 sales are likely to be dominated by early adopters* anyway. (*Does this term still apply this late into a generation?)

Yay GST. I wonder if it would be a better idea for Nintendo to hold back Professor Layton 2 until the holidays like last year. It seems to come so soon compared to the US, since it's still selling so well.

Don't give them any ideas. D:

TV ads. I am really wondering why sony did not make any kind of marketing for Infamous. The game deserved so much better. If it was Microsoft they had called it the new "Playing with a superhero who has electric power experience" and sold dizellion of copies. Sony fails so much in terms of marketing.

There were ads before every Terminator Salvation film I believe.

Now, if Sony can just get those remaining 2% to switch to PS3, they've won the console warz!!1

I haven't even seen a copy for this on PS2 on the shelf. I don't even think GAME are selling it in store for PS2, as I was in 4 different stores (all in Birmingham) this weekend and didn't see it in any copies of this. They're selling it online for PS2, though.

Incorrect. Having seen Terminator Regurgitation here in the UK, I can confirm that there was definitely no Infamous ad.

I think it was only for the US (inFamous was a SECA game wasn't it?)
Saw T4 here in Germany and also no ads.

Oh right because only Nintendo kids are rich enough to boost software sales during any holiday season. Do you have any other revelation to share with us? :lol

As per usual you completely miss the point. A game which was heavily marketed as a fathers day present sold significantly more during the week of fathers day, it's a no brainer. Just like more kids own a wii than an xbox360 or a ps3 so when school holidays occur and kids have more free time to play games wii sales go up more than the other consoles. It has nothing to do with 'nintendo kids' being rich as you put it. :lol

so more kids own wiis and more dads own ds's.

i guess that makes sense.

not really exclusive, but seems to be best version. i think quality licensed and recognizable franchisestuff can do well on the wii. much like lego star wars, guitar hero, cod, RE, etc.

im really interested to see how conduit fares.

Too bad the game is awful, and those customers will now sour on 3rd party games.

Everything debuting outside of the TOP 10 is selling less than 7k for sure

Look at Japan and UK monthly Top Ten lists

Yes, I think that needs to be considered more often.

Just as supplying a consistent stream of quality titles can encourage consumers to continue purchasing your products, a consistent stream of lower quality titles can have the opposite effect.

Go Prototype. Really low drop from last week for some reason. The game has the craziest action that I've seen in a long time, and thanks to what appears to be lots of modding potential it should last for a long time.

/looks for BitTorrent d/l stats...

PC only has 3 of the top 40 spots, so 3% isn't that bad proportionally. There also haven't been many big PC centric releases this year.

At least it's the way better training accessoire, it's actually kind of sports. It isn't all too gamey though and quite one-sided with a strong focus on your legs and next to no usefull training for the upper body.

The expansion pack coming this holiday focuses more on upper body. I think the focus of EASA was clearly women, who are most concerned about their thighs.

Dunlop said:

It really shouldn't bother you. The reason Wii Fit is selling better is that it kickstarted the fitness genre. EASA exists because of Wii Fit and its success. It is very common for imitators to come out with a technically superior product. In fact, it's nearly a necessity: why would anyone swap from the original product to buy a copycat that's inferior?

These are the rewards of being first. If your only concern for a game is: "Does it have quality production values? Is it well made?" then I can see your complaint. But I think it is much more reasonable to consider both quality and creativity: "Is it well made, and does it provide a unique and compelling new service?" In fact, consider a world where this is not the case.

For example, imagine a small startup company that comes up with a fantastic new idea. For two reasons, it would be reasonable to assume that their first product would be of low quality: first, because it's the first model ever made and it's only natural for quality to consistently increase as new models are developed; and secondly because they're a small company and have less resources at their disposal to begin with. If consumers exclusively valued the quality of production, then corporate conglomerates would have supreme and unstoppable power over the marketplace. If I'm, say, General Electric, all I would need to do is wait for little people to come up with good ideas, then copy them. Learn from the inevitable mistakes the originators make (and correct them), and use my billions of dollars of capital to push my product through with more features and higher production values.

Luckily, in the real world, this doesn't usually work very well. This is because consumers value the originality of a product, even in the face of technically superior copycats. If you have an exceptionally popular new product (like Wii Fit and Fitness games), it's actually very difficult to overcome the "first mover" advantage, even when you are small and the competitors are large. Of course, in this case, Nintendo is already bigger than Electronic Arts, so it's not surprising at all that they're staying on top.

And it isn't as if EASA is doing poorly, either.

Which would make you think that this game should be selling better on PC.

This, but also because your legs are the largest musscles in your body and therefore will burn the most calories once developed.

Concerning the upper body, I swapped out the band with one that has a much higher resistance, definately helps

Good point, it bothers me more in that because of the extreme sales of WiiFit, Nintendo will be less likely to improve the product. Of course WiiFit plus could prove me very wrong

It's a good thing that you should mention Wii Fit Plus, because it allows me to bring up one thing Opiate didn't that might be a factor in Wii Fit's (and WF Plus's) success: while it can be considered as fitness software, it's more of a fitness game. There's the exercise part, but there are also a good number of games that make use of the balance board. I don't know EA Sports Active too much, but from what I saw, the emphasis isn't on games.

Which brings me to Wii Fit Plus: while it shows obvious improvements, such as the ability to set a routine (something which Wii Fit users have been clamouring for) and to focus on specific parts of the body, the focus at E3 09 was on the new games, such as the platforming game. Anyone who's tried Wii Fit Plus here will likely tell you that. Heck, hasn't Anihawk said that he might buy it based on some of the games he tried (again, the platformer). Yes Boss! too IIRC. To them: feel free to troll me if I'm wrong.

It's unclear to me whether this emphasis on games in Wii Fit and its sequel play an important part in their success, but it sure makes them different from other fitness software, if only slightly.

Not at the moment. I believe both Gfk and NPD are currently trying to come to an arrangement with the relevant parties in order to let them track DD in the future.

Brain Training 1 & 2 did it, so I can't see any problems. I think PL1 will be £20 and PL2 £30 anyway by that point so it should be ok.

Walk with me climbs again to 28 - probably fairly flat sales wise. Supermarkets have it in now so I expect it to continue to climb. Still using mine, it's interesting but not exciting.

And yes - the mini games (basically WiiPlay2) in WiiFit keep you coming back to play more frequently than you would otherwise. Also means it gets dragged out at parties. Hope Plus has a multiplayer mode (hotpotato style).

Well no shit a game advertised on father's day is gonna get a boost on father's day. Once again why do kids matter during school holidays when all consoles would get a boost during such a time? Without sufficient data to prove the Wii has more kids, you're just playing the guessing game, and chart positions mean squat. Why does Wii kids have "more free time", when every single kid would have more free time during the holidays.
