The cool and fresh Android Market Thread

I am surprised none did this up to this point!

There is Andrex' Android Hardware Thread - 2009 Edition
And a Developement-Thread (also made by Andrex)

So here I am, creating a Thread about the actual Apps that are consumer ready, waiting for Android GAF to fill it.

Here's a handful of apps and games, I think are worth mentioning. Check them at Cyrket or directly from your device.

Number one: ShopSavvy
ShopSavvy is your shopping assistant. Use the camera in your phone to scan the barcode of any product and find the best prices on the internet and at nearby, local stores.
shop_savvy.jpg
Nice Gimmick. Also great to check QR codes like this one:

Number two: Wikitude
Wikitude World Browser presents the user with data about his/her surroundings, nearby landmarks, and other points of interest by overlaying information on the real-time (augmented reality) camera view of a smart-phone.
Wikitude uses the internal compass and GPS to determine where you are amd checks the position of different buildings/landmarks and other points of interests and links directly to wikipedia or other wikis. Works surprisingly well.

Number three: Locale
Locale dynamically manages your phone settings based on conditions, such as Location and Time. Never worry about your ringer going off in the wrong place or at the wrong time again. You can set it and forget it!
It sounds easy, it is easy. And very nice. I can go to the cinema and to university without having to worry abouth whether I forgot to turn my phone's speachers off. They automatically do, because locale remembers that for me. Great use of GPS. And there are a lot of plug ins. "Send SMS to GF, when I arrive in Berlin" "Turn of GPS, when battery is <30% percent" etc.

Number four: "Bonsai Blast"
Experience the Zen of pure gaming bliss! In Bonsai Blast, shoot to match colored balls in groups of 3 or more. The action gets increasingly more intense as you play. This is one game you won’t be able to put down!
In Short: Its Touch-Zuma with some interesting Ideas.

Number five: Twidget Lite
A Twitter homescreen widget that keeps you up to date where ever you are.

View tweets, reply, favourite, retweet, dm & set your status in an instant!
Its the obligatory twitter app. Works well for me and saves me a lot of sms, I could have written without it. Screw the haters!

Thats it for now, my 5 most often used apps. What do you recommend or use? I love android so far

Oh, hey, thanks for this.

I'm looking into jumping on the android train in about a month when the HTC Hero and/or Instinct Q launches, whichever is better.

SMS Popup http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?...search?q=pname:net.everythingandroid.smspopup
A simple app that shows a popup dialog when a SMS/MMS is received (including the contact photo). Also includes a ton of options to customize the notification.

Really love this because of the notification options such as reminders and LED color. The popup is convenient too, you can dismiss it and the system will still show you have unread messages, so you remember to reply, or mark it read. And if you don't like to the popup when your in the middle of doing something, you can restrict it to only popup when your phone is locked.

(The popup never closes what you have open, it overlays and can be dismissed, similar to the iPhone)

Zebra Crossing - aka Barcode Scanner, ZXing http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?...earch?q=pname:com.google.zxing.client.android

Scan barcodes on CDs, books, and other products, then look up prices and reviews, or search for a word in a book and find where it occurs. You can also scan QR Codes containing URLs, contact info, calendar events, and more.

Very cool app, I can scan stuff and see what the prices are on Google Shopping. I can also make contact information into QR codes which other people can scan and store on their phones and vice versa. Scanned info can be shared via email or sms. And it's from Google.

Movie Finder - ikamobile
qr-moviefinder-market.png

Going to see a movie?
With Movie Finder, you can quickly find showtimes, theatres/theaters, movies, trailers and reviews.

One of the most useful apps I have. You can save favorite theaters and see what's playing and when, or have the app detect your location and find the nearest theater. You can also input a location or just see what's playing. Highly recommended.

Scoreboard - Google Inc.
chart

Access daily sports scores, schedules, standings and news for Auto Racing, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Rugby and Soccer. Get live in-game notifications for your favorite teams.
scoreboard-nfl-scores.jpg
widget-black.jpg

Another of my most used apps. Includes a widget to show scores and results which can be cycled through. Must have for a sports fan.

Tap Money Tracker
TapPMT_qrcode.png

This is a powerful and easy to use application for money track.
Features :
  • multi-accounts
  • categories and subcategories assign to transactions
  • support multi-currency
  • shaking your phone and show the balance of account
  • simple annual budget
  • show balance of accounts
  • easy transfer between accounts
  • transaction remind and can repeat it
  • report summary of transactions by category, account or group
  • group transaction by personal, work or specify by yourself

I'm bad with my money management so this saved me a few times from overdrawing my account. Very useful, best check book program on the market, imo.

There's some more apps I really like, maybe I'll add those later.

Handcent SMS. the default messenger has a bug that drains the battery like crazy if you use it at all. download and use this, you'll see your battery life double, I'm serious.

that, and the messaging program is also pretty sweet

Been using Handcent and enjoying it(pop up is cool)

just added these over the week-

Battery Widget-
http://www.android.com/market/free-productivity.html#app=batterywidget
(simple and easy-shows exactly how much battery juice you have)

USA today-
http://www.android.com/market/free-newsweather.html#app=usatoday
(from what I have used so far its probably the easiest and cleanest quick news app)

really like the Flixster Movie app too-

FBReader (Free) and a few other paid apps that support more formats; I wouldn't know how well they are, though.

Downloaded Aldiko, and when used with Calibre converter (Aldiko only reads epub format) it works decently. Nowhere near as nice as Stanza, but it's usable.

Got one called "ringdroid"

Let's you cut clips from songs in your library to use ringtones, rather than using the whole song. Free, and simple interface.

21 posts and no mention of Shazam yet. I am so disappointed. Shazam is one of those apps that lets you find out the title and artist of a song you're listening to simply by hitting a button. Best of all, it's free!

It's mentioned on that "50 apps you should buy" link.

I just got a Hero. What I like so far:

Abduction!
abduction-screenshot.jpg

Cute and fun "jump higher!" game.

Barcode Scanner - scan QR codes to dl apps.

Facebook - I only DLed it to get the widget as the Hero can display the actual Facebook website...I'd recommend X.Facebook.com over this unless you want the widget.

Hyperspace Lite
p19-small2.png

Fun little game where you have to avoid holes to get to the end.

Shazam - Tag songs

ShopSavvy - Obviously awesome to compare prices.

Qik - Stream live from your cellphone. Cool to show someone something funny or cool happening when sending a pic message just isn't enough.

Haven't really dived into much and the browser is good (and speedy enough thanks to Sprint) that I don't feel the need to get apps for everything like I did on iPhone (I'd rather load the entire CNN webpage, for example) but browsing the market is a little annoying to do on the phone and I'd prefer a full desktop client/website so I look forward to more recommendations because unless I think of something I need or it's top few in popularity I am not browsing the app store!

wow one of the cool things about Android is how it handles notifications, why anyone would want to take 3 steps back is beyond me.

I'm using Google Listen, no complaints. It's actually really good. Found just about everything and the casts it didn't I was able to enter in the rss feed and they worked right away. Can't imagine something better, to be honest?

What sports scoreboards are people using? I'm trying out the Google Scoreboard app because SportsTap only allows for tracking 6 teams. It's nice and all but I didn't get an update on the Wisconsin football score until about 20 minutes after the game ended. The hell good is that?

Also...any talk of an MLB.TV ap for Android? It was one of the best things about the iPhone (that and DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket app) and I'm going to be really hurting next summer if there isn't anything.

Hopefully by next year they have live video inegrated. Took a whole year on iPhone before they had that available.

Of course, just audio would be a thousand times better than nothing. Hope it's as cheap as the iPhone version.

Wait, fuck! You can't just add an RSS feed into listen?
For some reason I thought this was the case.

You definitely can. Hit the menu button from the listen home screen and there is an add option. Works like a charm. I found the easiest way to do it was to just email myself all my urls from itunes then just copy and paste them into Listen. It's search function is kind of shit.

Go to www.cyrket.com to browse the marketplace from a desktop.

Does mediafly do local am radio streaming? I'm looking for an app that does that well. I want to listen to Milwaukee talk radio every once in awhile.

Yeah, I've seen that cryket link a lot, it doesn't load for me at all.

Is there any good program that will allow me to use any songs or any other audio from my computer (or whatever I put on my phone) as a ringtone?

Ringdroid...it's amazing

So let's say I wanted to use a One Piece song for a ringtone and sound effect from a game for an incoming text, I could?
You can use any song from your phone for a ring tone without an app. You just select it from your list.

I haven't messed around with using custom tones for message notification though. The app I mentioned simply lets you pick any spot in any song on your memory card to use.

I use it mostly for the notification customization options, which there are many more of than with the stock messaging app. The normal Android notifications are still there, and I have it set so that the popup only shows when the phone is locked and not when I'm using it. I mentioned this in my post.

Recomend me some good games that are either free or paid for.

I don't want some of those quick one time, time-wasters.

Something epic like an RPG that I can keep playing for a while.

Seriously? Buy a real gaming portable. Or find an emulator.
