I'm loving those shots. I really want to start shooting with models soon, did you just ask those people or wha?

Phatomile – who's been a long time contributor to PhotoGAF, but was banned a while ago – does professional photography and has access to real models, as opposed to having to do it himself or get his friends to pose.

Lucky bastard...

quack quacks! :lol
I got my brother a picture of some ducks i took printed on canvas for his birthday and when we were hanging it my two year old nephew kept pointing and saying quack quacks!

Neat picture Jeff.

I've sort have gotten bored with my locale and nature shots, I want to get into conceptual shooting. I have this surreal concept in my mind that I want to try out, it has to do with familiar objects in odd places, the other is mirrors...

3972547038_a2c0475020_o.jpg

That's just me playing around with a framed one but I want to take it into the woods, local parks... anywhere really and play with light being bounced from it, reflections of different colors in weird places etc.

Now I've got this fascination with ornately framed mirrors and if I wasn't broke, I'm sure I would go hog wild as far as buying random mirrors I'll probably never use together :lol

Blue Tsunami - that's a cool idea. I've seen so whacky things done with mirrors.

From megathread:

7D iso6400, baby:

EF-50mmf/1.8, f/2.0, 1/60s, iso6400

EF-50mmf/1.8, f/2.0, 1/60s, iso6400

This camera is letting me do stuff that simply wasn't possible before. The top shot is basically a single 30-40watt bulb.

Also:

EF-S60mmMacro, f/8.0, 2.5s, iso400

EF-S60mmMacro, f/8.0, 2.5s, iso400

Zhenming: Just wanted to say those look great, and a far cry from your previous overly-done HDR shots that I remembered.

Love the long exposure based car blur in the background (can see the light streaks).

These images are fantastic but I think a longer lens with a larger aperture to isolate the car would be a nice look too.

Very nice phantomile co. wherever you are.. aare.. are </echo>

Here are some random from today, the weather did clear up for a bit but it was very windy.

This is a case where a narrow DOF hurts a photo, more than it helps. The closeup shots of the plants are great, though. Especially the Mushrooms + Grass and the red leaf.

Do you live in Holland?

Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it a lot since I'm still very much a beginning photographer. And yep, I live in Holland. How did you know? Because of the flatness of the countryside? :lol

Cool, you've got a good eye, but it's easy to fall into the trap of shooting everything wide open when you have a new lens. Hell, I still fall into it every time I take my prime out, it's just so easy and satisfying to set the apeture wide open and shoot away.

I've spent a bit of time in Holland, and recognized those canals. It's a beautiful country!

I'm just following the pattern for image quoting :p

I really like images like this. I try to make them a lot, but often fail dismally. Well done.

Fooling about with my 7D some more:

I'd like to thank photogaf for all the help. Here are some of my favorite pictures I have taken over past month. What do you guys and gals think? Note: These were all shot with my kit lens via Canon Rebel XS.

I like this one. Though I think you should look at getting rid of the lens flare. I think its too close to the subject and part of it actually gets onto the subject.

I took the shot at a few different exposures. This one has no lens flare, or at least very little.

I feel like I haven't posted in here for ages! I have been lookin', but not snapping :(

Some great shots in here already though. As already mentioned the lighting in that shot Samusx is fantastic. Really gives the shot some punch.

snap - that's a brilliant photo. Look forward to seeing some more :)

mrmgoo - first cat shot is so nice. I want that cat. The photo of the door stands out too!

As I said...I haven't snapped for ages. Then weekend before last I went a bit nuts, so sorry for the spam!

The_Inquisitor: I like your compositions. You're going places!
PeteJ: Oh man, missed your images. They're great, as usual. I like your portrait-oriented road shot. Portrait landscapes can be so hard to pull off when you want mostly sky. I like how you position every so slight amount of faint cloud at the top. I've been considering this a lot, because often my shots feel unbalanced without something anchoring or bordering them.

Thanks man, I feel like I am learning a lot by just going out and shooting. I'm considering investing in a book and a second lens in the coming months. I am finding I really love photographing close up and nature.

I am thinking of buying this as my second lens. It is sharp, has a small minimum focus range, and is cheap.

Oh and a few more.

For the price, you can't go wrong with this lens. Though my collection's not big, this is easily my favourite lens I own and my go to choice when I go shooting.

Practicing is a very important thing to do with photography. You can't help BUT get better if you keep doing it.

Another surefire way of improving is to look at lots of other people's images. Identify what you do and don't like about them. Critique them honestly - don't be afraid just because you may think you are a beginner. This process helps you to start defining your own style.

That lens is a winner, and something I recommend to all people starting out with an SLR (assuming other brands have an equivalent). There are several reasons:

1) as a prime (fixed focal length), it forces the user to consider composition in a different way. To walk and position themselves where they need to be rather than let a zoom fix things for you.

2) as a wide aperture short-tele (on a crop), it opens up the world of narrow DOF shooting. Great for portraits.

3) as a wide aperture, also opens up the avenue for lower light shooting (although the focus is a bit naff).

4) all this for the cheapest new lens on the market, and light.

A fantastic learning tool. It really compliments a beginners tool set.

As far as books go, I think you can do a lot of learning online, and at libraries. I'm not sure buying a book is all that necessary, especially if they are expensive. That said, I've mostly just flipped through books I borrowed from the library. Photography on the net is a fantastic Canon-centred forum - great for learning.

If you want to turn that lens into a straight up Macro lens, just get a set of Kenko tubes that equals the focal length of the lens and you'll be able to shoot 1:1 Magnification. You lose the ability to focus beyond a certain distance though.

What lenses do you own, by the way?

Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II (Kit Lens that came with my Rebel XT)
Canon 55mm f/1.8
Canon 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM

In other words... not a whole lot. I've basically got the cheapest lenses available to cover a range of 18mm-200mm. Versatile, but not exactly the bleeding edge of quality. Still, enough to keep me satisfied at the moment.

That's right, I remember you getting the 55-200. Wait a minute... I thought you bought the EF-s 55-250?

Anyway, as you demonstrate, the bleeding edge of quality is vastly overrated in regards to image quality. It's not the biggest determining factor by orders of magnitude. As I hear from Scott Bourne a lot, 98% of [lenses] are better than 98% of photographers.

Here are some pics of my first day in Hong Kong, from a trip to Asia I made two months ago. This is the first time I was shooting with a 55-200 lens and I thought it was pretty difficult. I had only used a 18-55 lens before that. What do you guys think? Sorry if I'm spamming, just love to hear some feedback. I want to improve my skills. :D
