So far the only plan I have seen offered is the 500 unlimited text and internet plan for T-mobile. If that is the case than boo.

What is the "invite only" deal?

From what I've read, it's a "really good phone". I guess I'm spoiled; I expected Google to come out with some insane, kick-ass game-changer.

Anyway, it's nice, but it's essentially the Droid Eris with some minor upgrades. I need some hard keyboard action...though I might make an exception for the HD2. Is Windows Mobile 6.5 really that bad?

hmm.. i like the look of the Droid better, but this seems to have a better processor.

other than the speed of the phone, anything else that is special about this?

Welp, I'm going to be doing some intense research on this one. Hopefully it is a serviciable replacement/upgrade in most areas compared to my current device that is tied to AT&T. Can't wait.

Generally how does Android act with OS X?

I don't have my iPhone anymore so I'm looking for something new but I am incredibly underwhelmed by the design of the Android devices so far

You imagine the tears AT&T execs would be crying with this phone + the iPhone on their 3G network? :lol

At this time that is the rumor which I'm hoping either today or tomorrow (anytime before Tuesday would be nice) that it's cleared up what you can do to purchase this subsidized from T-mobile.

As far as the "invite only" thing... I think that was a rumor that was made clear that Google would exclusively be selling this phone come Jan. 5th instead of any retail partners that we know of at this time.

Definitely this. Way too much hype over this... and this is it???
I think it's the fact that this is an unlocked GSM phone that has our friends over the pond excited to see if this will work easily on their networks. Hell, I know with the traveling I'm going to be doing here in the next year and coming years, I NEED a phone I can swap sim cards on and travel internationally with. This fits the bill nicely.

2.1 android software, it's already been rooted, and the phone can be purchased unlocked.

I'll let you know since I'm using a MBP at home as my primary computer. There hasn't been too much talk on how it works w/ either Windows or OS X at this moment in time which I'm assuming will change here soon.

Yep.

And this found would be about 10x awesomer with a hardware keyboard... With the exclusion of that, I'll probably go to Verizon to get the Droid when I get rid of my iPhone in the (near) future... The honeymoon is over. :(

I will say it looks absolutely beautiful though. Simply gorgeous.

One big question, though. I'm currently on iPhone 3G and with that, iTunes integration comes seamlessly with my music. What would be my options for making this device or any Android device a good experience with managing and playing my current music library?

I'm actually trying to figure that one out right now as well since I want to move away from using iTunes w/ my current library... which will go to my N1. Have you asked over in the software thread yet?

Android is treated like a Removable Disk so it's drag and drop, so if your iTunes music is DRM free, you should (theoretically) just find where your iTunes music is stored and be able to drag and drop it onto the phone.

Failure #2. This is a long time problem with Android, Google doesn't offer any software for the computer to manage syncing data. You're on your own, which is probably fine for the techier people around here, but not ready for prime time when it comes to the mainstream.

Yeah, but people have been dragging and dropping since before the iPod came out, no? I mean, there are tons of other MP3 players out there and people have seemed to be able to get their music content on them fine.

I do agree that a syncing program would be nice.

Yeah, luckily I took some control of where music is stored with iTunes so all of my music is in just one main folder. I believe most of it is either mp3 or mp4a. I won't know what to do with any mp4p(I think I got the extension wrong), though. I guess just manual conversion?

I was just hoping for possibly another at least semi-automated method.

And Pctx, I have not asked this in the software thread at this point.

Double Twist should work on this, no? Asking because I'm completely unfamiliar with Double Twist. It's basically iTunes for other phones?

I'd like to keep the iTunes way of syncing all my media with my iPhone, just only now with an Android phone.

That looks like it might work. I'd never seen it before.

Finally a phone comes out that I want, to replace my two-year old Razr 2, and again I'm screwed by fucking provider-exclusivity. Hey Google, you can't let HTC make a version for Verizon? No of course not, then it would compete with Droid and Verizon doesn't want that.

Fuck these shitty companies. Do they have any idea how many customers they lose by locking phones to networks?

I personally hate the sync feature (as sometimes I want music on my phone that isn't on my computer, and vice-versa) and T-Mobile is one of the best carriers in my area, so I'm rather excited now. I can upgrade to a new phone in like... 6 months so by then the price should have dropped a little, and I can be happy.

Why should google make software to move files to your phone?

You could just do it manually, or get some 3rd party software that works with removable devices.

I don't know about you but I think it is better that google doesn't make some annoying way to sync the phone, anyone can make an app if they are so inclined.

It's a consumer expectation at this point.

Unlocked GSM phones ftw

Ah, great. Seems perfect for what I would need accomplished. And the Amazon store intergation is nice too.

Seems like a perfect storm of good things for me with this device. Dumping AT&T to save $20-$30 a month on service, getting an overall upgrade to my iPhone 3G (even though I do love it), identical 3G coverage in areas I am in mostly, and seemingly a nice transition thanks to at least some sync ability.

F syncing.

Newsflash - The mainstream was dragging and dropping long before iTunes came along. People have been dragging and dropping since 1993 and it takes seconds. I don't understand why people are so damned adamant about stupid ass syncing, not only is it a slower process but it is also extra steps to achieve the same purpose in a less direct fashion. If anything one of the things I love about the Droid/Android OS is that I don't have to sync and can have the freedom to put files exactly where I want to via a drag and drop interface.

Mount USB...2 windows, grab and plop. Done. No loading up a huge ass front end interface that may be entitled to crash and check permissions etc etc before hand.

It really pisses me off that people call a negative against a device that won't sync to their precious iTunes library especially when said device is solid as hell.

For the babies though, DoubleTwist will be there day one to coddle you.

Eh, I don't think so. When I can take 5min on the initial iTunes setup to have it do exactly what I want, 100% of the time by just plugging the phone in and forgetting about it, it is pretty appealing. I don't care if the program itself may take a bit longer than your method, I care about being able to connect the device then move onto doing something else immediately after.

Oh, bullshit. I was a huge drag and drop fanboy before I finally gave up and switched to iTunes, and drag and drop is a pain in the ass. You know how many times I would forget to drag some album or podcast over, then not realize it until I was out? Automated syncing is one step, and using database software allows for advanced functionality that isn't possible with drag and drop.

So this is the Google phone? This is the phone, that is made by Google. Not some random manufacturer putting Android on their phone, this was designed by Google, for Android. God damn.

The lack of Verizon is what is going to keep this away from me. Which sucks ass.

For me, syncing means using a program to manage a library of music that I wouldn't otherwise be using. Whatever amount of time I could 'save' by attaching it and forgetting it is completely invalidated by the time it takes to add new albums/songs to the library/playlist in a second place (I use foobar2000 for all my PC music listening needs.) It's a pain with that alone, without my previous complaint of not actually always want it syncing.

Well, made by HTC. But Google definitely was heavily involved with development.

I haven't been keeping up with the nexus. so, do you need 3g in the area to run the phone?

because if so I'm going to be one unhappy camper..

No, you don't need it. Although it would be a nice thing to have. As long as you have T-Mobile coverage, you're good. Same if you want to use it on AT&T. Except for AT&T it's EDGE only.
