A KFC ad in Australia has led some on the Internet to accuse the company of being racially insensitive.

The ad, part of the company's "Cricket Survival Guide" promotional series, features a young white Australian at a cricket match sitting in a sea of dark-skinned fans loudly cheering, presumably for the opposition. The Australian, known as Mick in the ads, remarks, "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?"

He then shares a big bucket of KFC with them, which seems to help matters. He ends by telling the camera approvingly, "Too easy."

The ad, which has been viewed over 200,000 times on YouTube and generated over 2,000 comments, is presented on that site with the leading title "Racist KFC Advertisement?" For what it's worth, the ad's title on KFC's website is "How to Silence a Noisy Crowd."

On Mediabistro, Kiran Aditham writes of the ad: "Here, a flustered white guy gets out of an "awkward situation"--which in this case appears to mean being stuck in a crowd of happy, cheering black people at a sporting event--by ordering in fried chicken."

Meanwhile Buzzfeed's Jack Shephard, who decided to drop the question mark and title his post "KFC's Racist Cricket Ad," introduces the video by saying, "What's a white guy to do when he awkwardly finds himself in a crowd full of black folks? KFC has the answer."

Is there a cultural context here that Americans are missing? One user writes on YouTube:

Americans might think this is racist because black people eating fried chicken is a stereotype that exists in their country. This ad was shown during cricket matches between Australia and the West Indies. If England had been playing at the time, the ad would have shown the bloke feeding chicken to the Barmy Army to make them sit down and shut up. There's no racism intended or perceived in Australia. The complaints I've seen have come from Americans guilty about they treat people in their country
What do you think? Is the ad offensive, or is this a case of overreaction?

So what does Gaf think? Is it racist, people just being stupid or media sensationalism designed to get hits?

I read the text and then saw the video and :lol :lol :lol

The ad is harmless, the text makes it sound 100x worse.

Hes clearly alone amongst the hundreds of opposing fans....so he wins their favor by giving them a crowd pleaser

KFC sponsors the cricket and I believe have sponsored the West Indies cricket team in the past, or at least their tours here. The colour and noise of W'indies supporters is well known and appreciated here. It's a common comical theme to find oneself alone amongst a group of boisterous supporters. The W'indies are known as a (formerly) great cricketing nation and their tours here are always appreciated.

The crowd happens to be black so it must be racist! They should drop a heap of whities in the crowd to add balance to the supporters of a West Indian team. I swear this shit is out of control.

(edit) Wow - just watched that Young Turks link. Once again American viewers project their own slanted view on something produced for another culture and declare it as something it is not and take zero effort to find the context of the Ad. That Young Turks view on the subject is laughable. They're trying to make themselves feel superior by spouting shit they know little of.

There's plenty of racism in Australia - this is not part of it.

This is the racist video. Theyre DIGGING to make it racist. "Look at all those unruly black folks!"

Clearly, theyve never been to the west indies, and clearly theyve never been to a sporting event there. THATS WHAT IT FUCKING LOOKS LIKE. Go to Brazil, same shit, black/brown people jumping around with drums. Its awesome, its what it is.

They even refer to them as african americans :lol :lol

"the white guy has to quiet them down by giving them chicken"

WTF? The white guy SUPPORTS THE OPPOSING TEAM, THATS WHATS FUCKING AWKWARD. I dont know if youve ever been wearing a jersey of an opposing team when surrounded by them....it can be awkward or scary.

I've done similar things before - dip in an egg mixture (egg, and whatever flavour you choose) and corn starch. But thanks for reminding me. I think I will do that one of these days.

The fact we see it as racist...makes it racist.
Why can't a white guy share his fried chicken with black people and it not be racist? Maybe the racism is in the eye of the beholders *mind blown*

I never understood the "lol black people like fried chicken!' stereotype. I mean, who DOESN'T love fried chicken?

Slaves on plantations weren't allowed to have/raise expensive livestock/meats but were generally allowed to raise chickens so fried chicken was a huge deal as a meal. Most “soul food” has its origins from slaves cobbling together what scraps they could/stuff white people wouldn't eat.

That said, it's a stupid stereotype because everyone loves fried chicken.

I'm more surprised that the "blacks like fried chicken" thing is a stereotype in Australia, too. Is it? Plus, he looks to be surrounded by Caribbean blacks (West Indies fans?), and I don't know that it's a stereotype that Caribbeans like chicken, at least fried chicken...

This.

WTF is wrong with me liking fried-chicken?!?

Who doesn't like it?

WHO!?!

Stay classy Australia . . . >_>

I don't understand this either?

Is it really so that there are more black people who like to eat chicken than white people? The question is absurd, but I'm dead serious. There was even a mass ban here on gaf about black people + chicken jokes.

I mean. What?

there's no such stereotype in Australia (and if there is i've not heard it). It's basically just Americans claiming it's racist.

This ad is one of a string of cricket KFC ads. In another ad i saw the guy wants to get a better seat so he puts on Security guard clothing and sits on the oval. When he is noticed by an actual security guard he gives him some KFC to placate him.

Which is classist, right? Smart guy placating dumb rent-a-cop by using brains and chicken.

The fact we recognize this stereotype makes us racist... and this outrage is to make them feel they aren't racist when they're probably more racist than the intent of the original commercial.

I'm black and I don't like fried chicken AT ALL :lol

There's no racism here. The whole "lulz black people sure love their chicken!" is a strictly american thing.

I have never watched a Young Turks video in its entirety. All of the hosts are inarticulate, unintelligent, and completely unfunny. Painful. They're only good to watch segments of videos not hosted elsewhere. I have no idea how they survive and presumably thrive while putting out such a lousy product year in year out.

As for the video... 'too easy' lol. That was a bit much.

ehhh thats not racist, the ad seems to be more about being in aplace with no friends. However they could have used a good mix of people instead off blacks. >_<

Want to see a real racist fastfood chicken ad?
Leave it to the Koreans >_>

Can someone show me how this is AGAINST black people.
For arguments sake, lets say that all black people love chicken. Well in this ad it suggests that many black people are trying to get their hands on some chicken. How is that against them?

If someone says that Italians love pasta, and then shows them all trying to get pasta to eat, how would that be AGAINST them either? It's just media sensationalism. Sure a little stereotypey, but relax, its not negative in any way.

There aren't enough black people in Australia for stereotypes to have really built up and besides, even if there were, none of them would involve chicken since that one only exists in the US because of historical reasons. The people in the crowd are West Indian.

If it had been a beer ad and the West Indian crowd been Aboriginal on the other hand, then it'd be seven different kinds of racist.

Thanks. Never been to Australia, so I wouldn't know. Thanks for shedding light on that.

Was he black? ;-)
