Although EspII was speculated to be region-locked to Japanese consoles, it seems that for whatever reason the LE is region-locked, but the SE is region free.

So if you want the game and don't have a J360, buy the Standard Edition! Don't scrub out and buy the LE on accident!

EspGaluda II will be CAVE's second region-free release after Mushihimesama Futari.

I also recommend picking up the US version of Deathsmiles by Aksys Games to support future CAVE releases overseas.

WHY SHOULD I CARE ETC

Sequel to the beginner-friendly shooter for Arcade and PS2, EspGaluda II is a deep arcade shooter with a complex game system. Unlike its predecessor, it is known as one of CAVE's most challenging games.

・Original arcade graphics redone in HD.
・Complex scoring system that involves switching in and out of modes that let you slowdown and cancel enemy bullets into big gold explosions.
・Four brand new game modes for the 360 release.
・Arrange mode- Developed by legendary programmer Tsuneki Ikeda and focusing on "speed".
・Black Label - A unique reworking by Battle Garegga programmer Shinobu Yagawa.
・Novice modes - For practicing and getting used to the tough difficulty.
・Omake mode - No information yet!

HOW CAN I PREPARE MYSELF FOR THE ONSLAUGHT

EspGaluda II is a really tough game. You're going to be dodging back and forth through some dense bullet fields, so I recommend a solid arcade stick, preferably one with a Seimitsu stick.

The Hori RAP EX-SE is a very good choice.

NOVICE MODE

This is a simpler version of all three modes with slower bullet patterns for people new to shmups or people that want to practice the patterns.

ARRANGE MODE

Arrange Mode is a remixed version of EspGaluda II by Battle Garegga programmer, Shinobu Yagawa. Judging by his previous games, it will probably include some kind of rank system whereby the game gets progressively harder the better you score.

・Blue bullets -> canceled with shot
・Red bullets -> with rapier
・When your gems reach 0 during kakusei mode, all of your attacks can cancel bullets
・When both gems and ingots are at 0, you can no longer use kakusei. The kakusei button will give you barrier.
・System is 5 life max every extend setting. Gems and gold max out at 1000.

BLACK LABEL

A unique mode developed by famed CAVE programmer Tsuneki Ikeda who has remarked that the theme for this mode is "Speed". This mode features "Seseri", the fifth stage boss, as a playable character.

Gameplay video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzC9mtXd2ps&feature=related

Some info on this mode from Famitsu 360:

・Seseri is usable instead of Asagi, BGM is all arranged
・Seseri's shot in Black Label traces her while she's in Kakusei mode. You can basically place "options" around the screen which attack for you.
・Her rapier fires wide and in the opposite direction that you are moving.
・Her rapier gets stronger the closer you are to an enemy.
・When not in Kakusei mode, bullets transform to gold
・You maintain the multiplier by canceling bullets
・There is a new gauge called the absolutely invincible gauge which allows you to use "absolute visibility" and "absolute invincibility".
・Destroying an enemy in Kakusei Overdrive mode spawans suicide bullets
・Kakusei Overdrive mode -> absolute invincibility can be used to increase the bullet count for every bullet you touch
・Gem limit is 500, gold limit is 10,000

Just like most people here, I really hope that this is regionfree... I played the first one to death on my J-PS2, but I can't really afford a J-360 right now. Well I could but I'm pretty sure, my girlfriend would kill me if I did go that far :(

I supported them with a purchase of Mushi.

Same, i bought several copies although knowing that if something was to happen, it'd go the localization route. Cave's intention from the start, hoping for bigger things. While i am indeed happy and do consider myself fortunate in some sense, since Death Smiles is getting a NA release, i'm in PAL-land. So either way, i'm screwed.

Will be buying a JP-360 in a couple of months though.

It's very cool that this time all the different game modes seem to be included on the disc, with no overpriced DLC modes waiting to be unlocked (correct me if I'm wrong). I wonder if they just weren't selling enough of the DLC to make it worthwhile, or if CAVE realized nickel & diming (actually fifteen extra bucks on top of 80+ isn't exactly nickels and dimes) their best consumers wasn't the best way to keep them fans?

Anyhow, really looking forward to this - just two more weeks!

You won't regret it man! Best version of the 360 hands down, and if I grab that DeathSmiles LE next month I'll send you my Standard Edition gratis if you want.

I can't believe this is coming out already!

I have yet to even get Mushimimesama Futari, so I'll be picking both of these up at the end of the month.

I will be in shmup heaven.

Amen bro, I'm going to be ordering an LE version of Mushi Futari off ebay when I get the cash at the end of the month.

Wait you mean black lavel is included from the start this time?

Hot fuck yes if true!

-edit- yeah, it's called esp galuda Black Label for shits sake... but thank god they are just including it now instead of making it 15 dollar DLC.

:O!!!!!!!!!!!!!! God damn!! I better make a start in getting one sooner!!! :D

Don't expect this to be region-free. There hasn't been any announcements and the game is coming out in a few weeks. Mushi was just a test to see how it would affect the sales. It might get localized though depending on how good the sales for the US-version of DeathSmiles are.

lol, I was 100% sure to find the gender-switching mentioned in the thread title! Now Cave will be known on GAF as the panties-free, sex-changing game company :lol

Jokes aside, I already preordered the limited edition and the normal one. Come on Cave, blow me away (again)!

I'm not even 30% done with Mushifutari yet... now this and Ketsui are knocking my door.

Sheesh.... preordered like usual. :)

When will we hear about region compatibility? I have this pre-ordered but I want to cancel if it's not region-free.

I imagine it won't be until the likes of Playasia get a copy in stock to test it. Sorry to get your hopes down, but if it was region free, I'm sure Cave would have said so by now, less than two weeks until release.

Screw Cave for teasing us with Mushihime. I can't see Aksys localizing every Cave release and somehow it's going to get turned on us for not buying enough copies of Deathsmiles.

If I buy a Japanese XBOX 360, can I just simply use a US power brick and HDMI cable and be good to go (with Japanese games of course) to play in the US?

You don't even need to use the US power brick. The one that comes with it works fine for me.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be region-free. If so I'll jump on this like a bulldog on a filet mignon. The original is my favorite shooter of all time, and I hear this is even better.

It's not going to be region free. Get over it. Cave made Futari region free to pretty much test the waters over here and now they've obviously decided to go the localization route.

If you want these games get a J360 or just hope it gets localization.

Region lock confirmed today:

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/02/12/cave-chats-about-deathsmiles-and-overseas-expansion/

"Makota Asada: Mushihime-sama Futari was our first region-free game and we were happy enough with the response to finalize our plans for the US release of Deathsmiles. Ultimately, releasing the game region free doesn’t make as much sense to us as localizing our games and building a real fanbase overseas. That doesn’t mean that we’re only going to release games in the US of course, it really depends on interest from fans."

Damn. I really was hoping they've learned with Futari.

Crappo. So, we gotta pray for Deathsmilees to sell well, or buy a JP 360.

They done fucked up. That's it, game over. I'm not buying Deathsmiles for their little tests. I want to play a good game. The best game. But they walked away.

Everyone keeps saying mushi futari sold better due to it being region-free. Just out of curiosity, has anybody got the cumulative sales numbers for the Cave 360 game released so far?

It's too bad EspGaluda II is region-locked. J-360s aren't THAT expensive, but it's still shelling out 200 bucks. At least it gives you access to a significant number of additional games and not just one or two.

I'll just buy 2 copies of DeathSmiles. Cave/Aksys won't miss you :p

The NTSC-J console importer comes out on top again! Although I kinda knew that they'd go this route if Mushi sold well enough. The games really don't have much to change in terms of localization, so maybe simultaneous launch for regions that have publishers for Cave games in the future?

kanugo said:

Well, if you read the interview, you would see that they feel they did learn from Mushihimesama. Unfortunately (to some's perspective), what they say they learned is that the game sold well enough overseas that they decided to go ahead and try to license games in the west, instead of continuing with region-free releases. They say the positive sales led directly to them agreeing to license DeathSmiles and that they will continue to pursue future opportunities.

What it boils down to is that they think they can make more money off localized versions of their arcade ports, rather than depending on people to go to the hassle of importing them.

The cheapest I can find is ~$350 after shipping. Anyone know of a cheaper alternative?
