· ‘God of War III’ is crowned No1 this week, bestowing Sony with their second game of 2010 to reach the coveted top spot (after ‘Heavy Rain’ reached No1 three weeks ago). In the whole of 2009 Sony only had one week at No1 with ‘Killzone 2’.

Launched exclusively on PS3, ‘God of War III’ outdoes its PS2 predecessor’s launch by 2.65 to 1. Like ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ last week, it is the series’ first true outing on a next-gen format, however it can by no means match Final Fantasy XIII’s spectacular debut which accounted for almost 3 times as many sales (although this was over 5 days and 2 formats while sales for God of War are for Friday and Saturday and PS3-only). ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ sales fall 80% as it slips from No1 to No3, while EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ holds on to the No2 spot, only 2,000 sales away from No1. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ is starting to become a familiar sight at the top of the chart, down one place to No4, while THQ record this week’s only other Top 10 new entry with the post-apocalyptic ‘Metro 2033’. The rest of the Top 10 jostles amongst themselves as ‘Wii Fit Plus’ moves down one place to No6 and ‘Heavy Rain’ slides 3 places to No7. Nintendo’s only Top 10 game this week is ‘Wii Sports Resort’, but it does mange to climb one place to No8, boosted by sales from bundled Wii hardware. ‘Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing’ slows two places to No9 and the unthinkable almost happens – ‘Modern Warfare 2’ almost falls out of the Top 10 for the first time, down 4 places to No10 this week. EA’s big newcomers this week both sit on the outskirts of the Top 10 with new expansion ‘Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening’ at No11 and ‘Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight’ at No12. The only other new entry is Capcom’s ‘MotoGP 09/10’ at No21.

Heavy Rain still clutching the top 10. :D

Played and finished it yesterday (8-10 hour session).
Amazing experience (despite its flaws) and I want more games like it.
Really glad that it's selling well.

Heavy Rain and next gen titles kicking arse. It HHAAASSS BEGUN!

ME2, HR now GoW3.... amazing year so far.

Little Big Planet is back? Awesome. Seems like many new PS3 owners are still buying it. of course the low price helps but still: good to see people didn't forget it.

and yeah, wohoo @ GOWIII.

Wow,GOW3 beat GOW2 launch by 2.65 to 1? Thats with what, half of the installed base of PS2 at that time?

People finally starts to love next-gen.

I have to say, it's really interesting that the PS3 version of FFXIII is doing so well in The Netherlands seeing as the TV ads only mention the 360.

and when they do, Sony has not enough PS3s in stock :lol

Thinking out loud...

Heavy Rain opened with 86k. So, either FFXIII (2.8*86k*1.2=290k) has matched X/XII (200~299k) or GOW3 opened worse than HR.

Sony is just full of fail this gen.
How the fuck do you not have a ton of PS3s out there when you are releasing two heavy hitters along with FFXIII. It makes absolutely no sense.

GOW was actually never as popular in Europe as it was in US... in fact, these European sales are quite surprising ;-).

God of War 2 actually had a lousy opening. It only managed to cross 100k in the UK after 1 year of sales, at the same time as GTA IV and Wii Fit. It is still a Silver release in the UK.

I was prepared to hate the living crap out of Heavy Rain, but it proved one of the most surprisingly engaging experience in my years of gaming. Even if I disliked the game, which I don't, I would be happy to see such a different kind of game perform well at retail.

Plus:

something something something Forza, something something something Legs...

Yakuza dropped from a surpisingly not very horrible place in the Top 40 Individual chart to place 13 (from 6) in the PS3 Full Price chart. That's about what one could expect I guess.

This is true and it's frustrating that so many comments in these European talkbacks always seem so ignorant compared to the generally excellent analysis in the U.S. and Japanese chart threads.

God of War was a complete flop in the UK and the first sequel was merely a minor hit.

Most of this is due to Sony Europe's almost non-existent marketing but, ironically giving the setting, the series' aesthetic is also clearly focused on a male American teen audience.

What are you talking about?
I think dolemite means that the 360 version of FFXIII sold better in its first week than God of War 3 did in its first week.

We got a 54/46 PS3/360 SKU split for FFXIII's first week, and found out that it sold three times more than GoW3's first week. Since 0.46 * 3 > 1, their math seems to work out fine.

But as noted in the OP, GoW3 only had two days of sales while FFXIII had five. How much of FFXIII's sales were on those last three days we will probably never know though.

I don't think this is especially surprising though since the DMC-style action games never seem to do astoundingly great in the UK, while Final Fantasy is quite a large brand there.

Loudninja said:

FFXIII = 3x GoW3
FFXIII = 54/46 PS3/360

So FFXIII 360 opened about 40 percent higher than GoW3 opened. If my maths is correct.

Edit: Beated like a red-headed step child.

Loudninja said:

Simple math. FFXIII sold 3 times more than GoWIII, and the 360 version had 46% of the FFXIII sales. Ergo, FFXIII 360 > GoWIII.

But as he said, more sales days for FFXIII certainly helped.

Edit: Bah, beaten. Mental note: Next time, don't look up the numbers.

I'm certain we'll see GOWIII having more legs that FFXIII though. FFXIII took quite the plummeting this week with an 80% drop, while Battlefield remains triumphant.

Surprisingly, FFXIII (360) is actually bigger than God of War III. Three extra days certainly helped.

That will probably change in next week charts. Now that we are doing random comparisons, isn't the real story here that Heavy Rain will outsell Mass Effect 2... well atleast in Europe that is.

Yay Heavy Rain still hanging in there in the top 10 :D Makes me happy that people in this country DO know a good game when they see one.

Good to see God of War up there too. It's suitably epic for the top spot. Wonder how long it will hang around in the charts though!

Also: Yay at LittleBigPlanet randomly being back on the chart :)

FFXIII really looks like a one week wonder. With Just Cause 2 and Pokemon out by the end of this week, FFXIII may be out of the top ten next week.

Fragile Dreams didn't do so well on Wii only chart:
- 25 SCENE IT? TWILIGHT A2M KONAMI KONAMI
23 26 SUPER MONKEY BALL: STEP & ROLL SEGA SEGA SEGA
- 27 FRAGILE DREAMS: FAREWELL RUINS OF MOON TRI-CRESCENDO RISING STAR GAMES RISING STAR GAMES

Wow, simply WOW at Heavy Rain.. I think GOWIII didnt do much impressive with the hype train it was riding on.. i wander if it has even managed 100k first week in UK

Well if HR outsold ME2 in the UK, there's a good chance that it has done so in other PAL countries. I don't remember seeing ME2 charting a lot outside of UK, and certainly not sticking around for a couple of weeks.

edit: it's weird that GoWII didn't get a gold award. It sticked in the top 5 for at least a month oO

ME2 actually had a pretty good debut, being #1 in most countries and it's not like it dropped off like a rock either. It's also on PC which as you know means a big deal in Europe. HR's legs seem very good atm though, we'll see how it plays out.

Checked that, you're right. For some reason I thought it hadn't performed that well in the other main EU countries (FR, GER, SPA). It actually did well.
