My Genesis Guide - I separeted the good from the bad in the Sega Genesis library

You probably remember my NES guide from about a week ago (here), and now I've made one for my favorite system of all - the Sega Genesis! This lists every American Genesis game ever released and separates them into 5 categories - BEST, Good, Worth Playing, Not for everybody, and AVOID. If anybody wants, they can list all the really good MegaDrive only games like Alien Soldier and Panorama Cotton if they want, but this is mainy used as a North American buyers guide.

Check it out. If you see anything that you disagree with, tell me what I should change, and why. Remember, this is mostly my opinion(I haven't beaten every game I've ranked here - sometimes I'd only demo a game for a minute or two before coming to a conclusion).

Hopefully, this can be used as a reference guide for anybody looking for a good game to play.

Nice list. I hate Light Crusader, but hey if you enjoyed it good for you, at least Landstalker got RESPECT! :D. A question though, why is Beyond Oasis in RPG and Light Crusader, Crusade of Centy and Landstalker in Adventure? Just seems a little odd to me.

Random comment on random game in list: I never understood what people (Europeans) saw in Gods. Seems crap to me.

You're a fellow Light Crusader apologist, I see. ^_^

Heh, I bought Tinhead a few days ago for four bucks...should look great on my Nomad.

The only Genny game I need is Streets of Rage 3...I've got almost all the other games that I consider essentials. I do have the rom at least, but I'd like to play it on my Nomad.

I'd say there's a good ten Genny games I need to get before I'm satisfied with my collection. Definitely some of the arcade classics I mentioned.

Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind grabbing Super Monaco for Nomad. The place where I got Tinhead has a couple copies, so maybe I'll pick it up soon.

Awesome post!

I haven't played a fair number of the games as you've covered here, but of the ones I have played, your judgment generally hits the mark.

Decap ruined MFHTA. It removed the one-up pole and the style was horrible. Also, if memory serves, it removes shitloads of the original pill power-ups.

For the same team as Pschyo Fox. OMG, digging out of box right now!

Hmm. I've given it a little more thought. I originally placed Contra Hard Corps in the 'Good' category(and not the "BEST") because some people complain about its difficulty. However, I'm going to readjust that, and put it under "BEST". The game isn't THAT difficult if you just memorize the boss patterns. At the very least, it's better than Vectorman.

Also, I guess I put Beyond Oasis under rpg as a resort to padding that list a bit. However, since Landstalker is under "Adventure", I think Beyond Oasis belongs in that category as well. Good eyes.

Also, one that really sticks for me is 'The Immortal' in the 'Good' section. That game is incredible... should easily be in the 'Best' section.

Where are Star Control and Turrican?

EDIT: I found Star Control, but I have no idea a) why it's merely "Good" and b) why it's in the "Strategy" section.

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
Great list. It reminded me that I never got around to playing Shadowrun :D. And I'm getting a serious Landstalker jonesing too.

Shouldn't Shining In The Darkness be in the RPG section ? It's straightforward Wizardry/Eye of the Beholder fare, and it's quite good IMO. And I personally quite enjoyed both Gemfire and King's Bounty, although I can see why you'd put them in the "Not for everybody" category..

Great call on most of the others, although I've only played about half of that list :)

You're absolutely right. Despite being the first entry into the Shining series, SITD was definitely more of a dungeon-crawler. Fixed.

I used to have a Sega Genesis, then my mom gave it away to my neighbor (also my best friend) along with the games. Including my two very precious favorite Genesis games.. Aladdin and World Series Baseball. :D

I take serious issue with your placement of Outrunners. It is one of the worst arcade to home conversions ever, and one of the worst racing games on Genesis in general. Choppy non-scaling mess. You can't even play single player full-screen, the whole game is splitscreen. The game personally offends me because Outrunners is my all-time favorite 2D scaling racer, it is the epitome of SEGA in their prime for that era of arcade games. The handed-off to Data East Genesis version is a disaster. It should be under the AVOID category (or at bare minimum, not for everybody).

Avoid Outrunners?

Actually, it's hard to choose between Outrun and Outrunners for me. Outrun has the novelty of NOT being split-screen. But Outrunners has the cool 2-Player mode. So, its really a toss-up for me. I haven't played the Outrunners arcade game, so its difficult for me to judge the game based on that.

I agree with most of this list, but WTF is Target Earth (Assault Suit Leynos 1) doing in the merely GOOD section? That game is arguably better than any other run & gun title on the system. Personally, though, it's the best one...with Gunstar just below.

Has problems recognising girls
Nice list. Time to search!

(since I already have a stellar SNES library, I needed one for Genesis :D)

Target Earth is a great game, but its gameplay is a bit on the sluggish side. I understand the japanese version(Leynos) is much, MUCH better though. Is there truth to this myth?

BEST: NFL '94 starring Joe Montana, Madden '97, Mutant League Football, College Football National Championship, Tecmo Super Bowl Series(1-3)
GOOD: Madden 94-96, College Football National Championship 2, EA College Football series:(Bill Walsh 1-2, College Footabll 96,97), Prime Time NFL Football, NFL 98
Worth Trying: Joe Montana II Sports Talk Football, Sports Talk Football '93 starring Joe Montana, Madden '98, Madden 91-93, Madden '93:CE, NCAA Football, NFL Quarterback Club, NFL Quarterback Club '96, NCAA Football [/quote]

Great work on your list, but you obviously did not play football games back in the day. The whole NFL series is worth trying, with NFL 94 being a borderline good, but the whole Madden and EA College (Bill Walsh) series of games are by far the best.

Well, some argue Madden is better, while others prefer the Joe Montana series. I was aiming to please everybody by putting the best game in each series under 'BEST'.
