2010-2011 PSP RPG lineup, or why the PSP is the best system for JRPGs right now

Hello! This thread was inspired, frankly, by the sudden and surprisingly rich lineup of RPGs on the PSP that’s coming in the future. The announcement of the Tactics Ogre remake and the upcoming release of Ys Seven doesn’t hurt either ;) But the fact is clear: if you like JRPGS (or Strategy RPGs or Action RPGs), there is no excuse for not owning a PSP. You’re just going to be depriving yourself… And I didn't even include games that have been released in years prior!

Quick notes before we begin. I only included games which have already been announced for North American release. I also try to use in-game English screenshots whenever possible. Yes, I occasionally fudge the RPG classification, but not so much that you’ll see games like Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on here. Anyhow, hope that this thread will inspire some people to go out and get a PSP for these games (or at least get the games!).

2010 Titles:

Lunar: Silver Star Harmony
Company: XSEED Games
Category: RPG
Release Date: March 2nd, 2010
Website: http://www.lunarsilverstarharmony.com/
Metacritic: 80/100

lunar_silver_star_harmony.jpg

The original Lunar needs no introduction, but this ground-up remake has also been favorably reviewed, as can be seen on Metacritic (current score: 80). It’s so pretty now! And it’s currently on sale on PSN for $14.99! What are you waiting for!

Harvest Moon: Hero of Leaf Valley
Company: Natsume
Category: Farm Simulation
Release Date: April 26th, 2010
Website: http://www.natsume.com/coming_soon/games/hmholv/index.html
Metacritic: 74/100

harvest.jpg

If you want a Harvest Moon game on your PSP, then apparently this is the game to get. Can’t say much since I have admittedly never played any of the Harvest Moon games…

Hexyz Force
Company: Atlus USA
Category: RPG
Release Date: May 25th, 2010
Website: http://www.atlus.com/hexyzforce/
Metacritic: 68/100 (ludicrous - should be at least 75+!)

hexyz.jpg

Don’t let the bafflingly low review scores fool you – this is one fine RPG! For one, it has one of the best features ever in an RPG – the fast-forward button. It means tedious combat can now be finished in seconds! Plus, the story of the male protagonist is quite good. Luckily I didn’t start with the girl since I can see why people would find her and her friends annoying…

Persona 3 Portable
Company: Atlus USA
Category: RPG
Release Date: July 6th, 2010
Website: http://www.atlus.com/p3p/
Metacritic: 91/100

persona3portable.jpg

What else is there to say? It’s Persona 3, but now in portable form. And with a whole new female protagonist. Which means different social link options. Very well-reviewed, although it just lost its position as the #1 game on PSP ever on Metacritic…

Ys Seven
Company: XSEED Games
Category: Action RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: August 17th, 2010
Website: http://www.worldofys.com
Metacritic: 79/100

ys7.jpg

The legendary Ys series returns to North America, this time with a brand new sequel developed directly by Falcom themselves! Adol Christin’s 7th adventure has already been released in Japan to great acclaim, with many calling the fast-paced ARPG one of the best in the series. Just check out the official website – if the music alone doesn’t knock your socks off, then you don’t have a pulse. And the collector’s edition is positively yummy.

Valkyria Chronicles II
Company: Sega
Category: Tactical RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: August 31st, 2010
Website: http://www.sega.com/games/valkyria-chronicles-2/
Metacritic: 83/100

ValkyriaII2.jpg

Having never played the original game (since I don’t own a PS3), all I know of the game is via its stellar reputation…and the amount of bitching that occurred when the sequel was announced for the PSP. Anyhow, from the looks of it, the art style and the combat carries over quite successfully, although the maps are obviously smaller for portable play. The game’s coming out soon, and Sega didn’t even bother with a proper trailer except for this ludicrously short “Announcement Trailer”.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Company: Square Enix
Category: Action RPG
Format: UMD only
Release Date: September 7th, 2010
Website: http://na.square-enix.com/khbbs/
Metacritic: 82/100

20pepw8.jpg

What else needs to be said? It’s the Kingdom Hearts prequel on the PSP, and judging by the impressions of the Japanese version, it’s one of the best titles in the series. Oh, and there’s a delicious-looking Collector’s Edition slated for Europe (but not for North America??). Anyways, if you are a fan then you’ll be picking it up already!

Gladiator Begins
Company: Aksys Games
Category: Gladiatorial Action
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: September 14th, 2010
Website: http://www.aksysgames.com/games/gb/
Metacritic: 59/100

2s93ryb.jpg

OK, this is NOT an RPG, but I’m really looking forward to it, so I’m cheating a bit by including it here ;) In some ways you could consider it a dungeon crawler – there’s a lot of stat upgrades, customizations and equipment you can get as you win battles. Jiji has a wonderful thread on the game here. It certainly explains the game much better than I ever can. There’s even a demo out on Aksys’ website, so why not go and try it out? The graphics are even surprisingly good. Trailer is here.

Phantasy Star Portable 2
Company: Sega
Category: Action RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: September 14th, 2010
Website: http://www.sega.com/games/phantasy-star-portable-2/
Metacritic: 69/100

PSP2.jpg

After unexpectedly selling a boatload of copies in Japan (and much, much less than that in North America), Phantasy Star Portable is getting a new localized sequel, to the relief of PSP (that’s Phantasy Star Portable!) fans. Again, followers of the Phantasy Star Universe series can probably do much better than me in explaining the game, so instead here’s another trailer from Sega that manages to say very little about the actual game. Plus, the game now has full infrastructure mode.

Cladun: This is an RPG
Company: NIS America
Category: Action RPG
Format: PSN (UMD unconfirmed)
Release Date: September 21st, 2010
Website: http://www.nisamerica.com/games/cladun/
Metacritic: 80/100

cladun.jpg

Actually this is NOT an RPG – it’s an Action RPG, but whatever. Something about this game’s sprites reminds me of Namco’s classic The Legend of Valkyrie, which is a very, very good thing. Anyways, this purposefully retro-looking game (I guess the craze is still going strong?) is a hack-n’-slash/loot-athon paradise. You can even choose between TG-16-esque chiptunes or the regular soundtrack. Here’s the English trailer. Note: the game is only on PSN, so no UMD release.

Blazing Souls Accelate
Company: Aksys Games
Category: Strategy RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: October 19th, 2010
Website: http://www.aksysgames.com/games/bsa/

351x0ts.jpg

Developer Neverland (Generation of Chaos, Spectral Force) ported the original 2006 PS2 Strategy RPG game to the PSP in 2009 and gave it a nonsensical new title. Considering how the last few PSP Neverland/Idea Factory games were received, hopefully this game will be an improvement (for one, the load times problems in earlier games have been corrected). Aksys Games (the BlazBlue guys) are localizing it.

Z.H.P. Unlosing Ranger Vs. Darkdeath Evilman
Company: NIS America
Category: Dungeon Crawler RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: October 26th, 2010
Website: http://nisamerica.com/games/zhp/splash/
Metacritic: 81/100

ZHP.jpg

NISA continues to be enamored by long titles with this long-awaited localization of Zettai Hero Project, the wacky dungeon crawling, quasi-strategy RPG developed by the main Disgaea team. In order for you to appreciate the humor, I present to you its amazing trailer. Admittedly I still don’t quite get how the game works, but am looking forward to finding out more!

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Company: XSEED Games
Category: Action RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: November 2nd, 2010
http://www.worldofys.com/ysf/
Metacritic: 81/100

ysfelghana.jpg

This remake of the much-maligned Ys III was released on the PC to much fanboy adulation, although admittedly I will miss the voice acting from the original TG16 CD-ROM version (Chester anyone?). Gone are the side-scrolling action, replaced with a top-down 3D engine first sported by Ys: The Ark of Naphistim, but now refined to perfection by developer Falcom themselves. The PSP port now even sports full voice-acting!

Knights in the Nightmare
Company: Atlus USA
Category: Strategy RPG
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: November 9th, 2010
Website: http://www.atlus.com/knightspsp/
Metacritic: 75/100

KITN.jpg

Sting/Atlus does it again with yet another enhanced port to the PSP (after Riviera and Yggdra Union). Part bullet-hell, part Strategy RPG, this was original a DS game that uses the stylus. How the game translates to the PSP is still a bit of a mystery, to be truthful (yes I know the game’s out in Japan!). But the game has upgraded visuals and music, and also features Princess Yggdra as a playable 3rd character. English teaser trailer here.

Games coming in 2011 or with TBA dates:

Lord of Arcana
Company: Square Enix
Category: Monster Hunter clone
Release Date: January 25th, 2011
Website: http://na.lordofarcana.com/
Metacritic: 50/100

71l1lc.jpg

Lord of Arcana was announced by Square Enix to pretty much a collection yawn on NeoGAF. Time will tell if this unabashed Monster Hunter clone can distinguish itself apart from the pack or not, especially considering that both Monster Hunter Portable 3 and God Eater Burst are coming out this year (in Japan, natch). Interesting that the game was announced suddenly for both North America and Japan at around the same time.

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
Company: Square Enix
Category: Strategy RPG
Release Date: February 15th, 2011
Website: http://na.tacticsogregame.com/
Metacritic: 87/100

tacticsogre.jpg

The seminal SRPG title by Quest is given a rebirth by its original creator, Yasumi Matsuno, for this “re-imagining” on the PSP. With updated 3D graphics, new characters and scenarios, more character depth, new music and a new English localization by Alexander O. Smith, this is a dream project for SRPG fans (myself included).

Ys I & II Chronicles
Company: XSEED Games
Category: Action RPG
Release Date: February 22nd, 2011
Website: http://www.worldofys.com/ysc/
Metacritic: 63/100

15i419d.jpg

Forget the DS release last year – THIS is the definitive version of the Falcom classic, again developed by Falcom in-house. An improvement over earlier PC releases (so much so that this version was actually ported *back* to the PC afterwards!), the game has (in my opinion) the best versions of the Ys classic tunes yet (like this or this). The tried-and-true gameplay is still intact, but everything else has been upgraded.

Phantom Brave: Heroes of the Hermuda Triangle
Company: NIS America
Category: Strategy RPG
Release Date: March 8th, 2011
Website: http://nisamerica.com/games/pbpsp/
Metacritic: 65/100

phantom-brave-psp.jpg

Phantom Brave will get its *third* consecutive port, this time for the PSP. Good or bad news? You be the judge... Personally, it's great since I never played the Wii or PS2 versions.

Patapon 3
Company: SCEA
Category: Rhythm Action
Format: UMD, PSN
Release Date: March 9th, 2011
Website: http://us.playstation.com/games-and-media/franchise/patapon-franchise.html
Metacritic: 74/100

2a0fi9v.jpg

If I was cheating with Gladiator Begins, then I really, really stretched it by including Patapon 3. But just look at the screenshot – stats! Lots of stats! And experience points! Now if that isn’t RPG-ish, then most games here aren’t RPGs either ;) Anyways, the 3rd game has on-line multiplayer (and a demo that showcases this) as well as those funky costumes. Can’t wait!

Gods Eater Burst
Company: D3 Publisher
Category: Monster Hunter clone
Release Date: March 15th, 2011
Website: http://www.d3publisher.us/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=140
Metacritic: 70/100

godseaterburst.png

Namco Bandai’s Monster Hunter clone was a substantial hit in Japan, so naturally they’d want to localize it for the overseas market, where Monhun is…ugh, never mind. Anyways, the game isn’t really an RPG, but Monhun and the likes have always fallen into that dubious cross-genre mould. The game was originally supposed to come over this year, but due to the advent of the new God Eater Burst, it has been pushed back to early 2011. Luckily, we’re getting the enhanced version for our troubles.

Jikandia: The Timeless Land
Company: Aksys Games
Category: Action RPG
Release Date: March 15th, 2011
Website: http://www.aksysgames.com/games/jttl/
Metacritic: 60/100

2dp0dd.jpg

By the creators of Half-Minute Hero but published by Idea Factory, this is akin to Half-Minute Hero but as a side-scrolling action RPG. Will the idea work? We'll find out Spring 2011!

Dissidia 012[duodecim] Final Fantasy
Company: Square Enix
Category: Fighting Action with RPG elements
Release Date: March 22nd, 2011
Website: http://www.dissidia012game.com/
Metacritic: 78/100

dissidia-012.jpg

The sequel to the successful Final Fantasy action/fighting mashup now sports a ridiculous new name. New characters include Lightning, Kain, Tifa and most likely Vaan. Yay?

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Company: XSEED Games
Category: RPG
Release Date: March 29th, 2011
Website: http://www.trailsinthesky.com
Metacritic: 80/100

zxtv9y.jpg

The latest in the legendary Legend of Heroes series finally leaves the Eastern lands to let us lord over the lives of those in Liberl. The previous Gagharv trilogy was ported over from the PC originals by Bandai, but the results were horrible. Falcom this time took over the PSP development and it was a good call – the series has now sold nearly 1 million copies over multiple platforms, an enormous amount for such a niche developer. XSEED will have its hands full porting this over since the series is notorious for their huge adventures (the 2nd chapter was the first-ever 2-UMD disc game).

The 3rd Birthday
Company: Square Enix
Category: Action RPG
Release Date: March 29th, 2011
Website: http://www.the3rdbirthdaygame.com/
Metacritic: 70/100

The mysterious, long-awaited follow-up to the Parasite Eve series was announced in August 2008 for the PSP…and promptly disappeared, at least until this year’s E3. Since then, a smashing new trailer was unveiled with actual in-game footage. Still not much is known except the basic premise and the “Overdrive” ability, but this doesn’t stop it from being one of the PSP’s most-awaited titles.

Third Birthday. <3 <3 <3

Everything after that is gravy.

PSP's been the RPG machine for a while now for me. FFT/Disgaea 1, 2/etc.

Dont forget that Phantasy Star Portable 2 now has true infrastructure mode, so no ad-hoc party needed.

Defintely grabbing Ys.

Shame these games will be sent to die :( A price drop on the Go and no game over $30 would be a start.

List looks good though, I'll probably pick up 3 or 4 of the titles listed, and might get a Go to go along with my CFW 1000.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
With nisa's tendency to make ridiculously long game titles, it makes me wonder why they decided to shorten cladun. Im not really bitching though, because im really glad that its actually making it here

It's ashame it took this long for devs to be genuinely interested in developing on the PSP. At least the PSP could've (and still should, IMO) receive a lot of Portable'd-PS2 games.

There was a long period in 2008-2009 where I didn't use my PSP very much, but I'm really getting into it again this year. Lots of great games coming out!

I love this thread.

This thread makes me want Legend of Heroes, Ys Seven, Ys: Oath of Felghana, Tactics Ogre, and Ys Chronicles.

Topping it off with 3rd Birthday, Birth by Sleep, and Agito XIII.

I really need to give my PSP more attention.

Also, is that Zettai Hero Project game sorta like a Roguelike? Cause if so, I'm SO DOWN.

I'd say both portables are Jrpg's heavens way more than consoles...
But yes PSP really improved it's Jrpg localization input... i have all of the rpg's released for it this year so far.. And i'll be getting all the upcoming ones as well.
Bummer about Cladun getting a PSN only release... i wanted an UMD copy

I love me some games on PSP and I can't wait for The Third Birthday, but I think calling PSP the best system for JRPG's is false.

Granted I know alot of people would disagree, but I still think DS beats it out.

No way. Half the damn problem with the PSP is that it tries way too hard to offer a console experience on a portable.

Pretty much every title listed in the OP is perfect for this system.

Cladun is PSN only? Fuck.

I'd say something but then I realized I couldn't give two shits about the majority of the DS RPG library. That's not a knock on the library though as it just highlights how much I prefer ARPGs over every other type of RPG. The PSP looks to be king for that sort of thing(course it has some swell S-RPGs too..shame I'm not really into those).

RPGs! :D

I need a new PSP so bad it hurts, but I don't want to get a 3000. Where are you, oh fabled PSP 4000? WHERE ARE YOU?

As much as some of those game are tempting me, namely Tactics Ogre, Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts BBS, and Valk Chron 2....i just can't bring myself to buy a PSP, especially at the tail end of its life cycle without a word on what kind of backwards comp. psp 2 will have.

I still think you'd be wrong. If you notice my thread's headline, I said the PSP is the best system for JRPG *right now*. As in, for the games coming up in 2010-2011. The DS' RPG lineup has dramatically declined this year.

Well if this is the case then you shouldn't list games that have aleady launched if you are going to do a thread that is all about future titles.

Also saying that PSP is a better portable RPG machine *Right Now* based on future releases doesn't make sense at all to me.

Granted it might be in the future, but right now it certainly isn't beyond anything other then potential.

Well that was why I said "Portable'd" even though it isn't a real word, neither is portable-ified. Either way, I meant that they'd be made to work to the strengths of the PSP's portability, much like Persona 3 Portable.

Did you read the thread title? It specifically says 2010-2011 PSP JRPG lineup. Every game I listed is from 2010-2011. I didn't list games from 2006, or 2007, or 2008, or 2009. Now who is being unclear?

I hate how no one else here in the US feels this way, but PSP is my favorite console of this generation.

Seems like a decent line up. I'm excited for Phantasy Star Portable 2 and Birth By Sleep mostly. I've never played an Ys game before but it has always been on my list of games to try before I die.

Most of the incompetent devs that worked on the PSP never thought that way however, which is why we are where we are today.

It's not so bad though cause as anyone can see from this thread niche genres go almost entirely unaffected from whatever problems might be facing the PSP. It's really a fantastic system when developed towards its strengths.

This line does not in anyway say out now, it says upcoming there for what has come before even in 2010 doesn't apply.

Also you are going to tell me that anything that has come out previously in 2010 ranks anywhere near Dragon Quest IX?

Like I said PSP isn't best until these games are proven, no matter the developer any of these could turn out to be garbage or not live up to the hype.

Also my point was up until today that PSP is not the best Right Now which is exactly what you claimed.

I love my PSP but its main problem is that some really good shit stays in japan and some really awful crap gets localized in the US. (by no means is this a judgement of the previously mentioned games)

Admittedly, I'm a PSP fanboy. But it's true - the PSP has been pushing out some GREAT software lately. And this 2010 / 2011 road-map confirms even more greatness.

I just can't agree with this. With the exception of TWEWY, which I absolutely adore, the DS cannot match the PSP with respect to JRPGs even without factoring in the PSP's upcoming lineup.

Sorry, but Dragon Quest IX is just one game, and we're talking about a whole system's 2010-2011 lineup. The fact is that the DS JRPG lineup has slowed down greatly this year. There's still Etrian Odyssey III and 4 Warriors of Light, but apart from that it's really dried up. Even earlier in the year we didn't get much beyond Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, Blue Dragon and Glory of Heracles.

And most of the games I listed like Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Valkyrie Chronicles II, Ys series, Z.H.P. have already been released in Japan to good reviews. So how much more "proven" do you want?

It took awhile but the PSP is finally getting the JRPGs that I thought it would get.

Still, a lot of those aren't that great but I'm still glad to see the system getting these games.

And I'm more than grateful that we're getting these localized.

If it wasn't for Dragon Quest I definitely prefer the PSP's RPGs. But seeing games like Tactics Ogre, VC2, and 3rd Birthday...I think my preference for the PSP has gone up higher than before.
