Really great.

So the ticket booths are is inspired by fantasyland. Its awesome that its the old tournament tents version of fantasyland instead of the new fantasy medieval houses ones that there is now (the ones that are now are better, but is a nice touch to see the old ones here).

I'm sorry if I'm raining on people who are genuinely excited for this but I think the actual interactions looks bland and boring. The gameplay with the paint and thinner looks very pedestrian and its integration with the levels they have shown just keeps me feeling tepid. I'm really trying to understand why certain people are going ga-ga over this game, and within that over what specifically.

Maybe because it looks like a fun game? And perhaps because Warren Fucking Spector is working on it?

What I personally find interesting is that the mechanics are very simple, paint to create and thinner to erase, but that the decision-making in using one over the other is a very conscious and sometimes moral one as it has consequences for the rest of the game. Consider you want to be the good Mickey because you expect a certain payoff or affordance but then you have almost no paint left, are you going to use thinner "just this time" and hope you don't ruin things for yourself in the long run, will you just paint hoping your meter will be restored, or will you take no risk and go that extra mile to refill the paint-meter? Will you even know what's good in every situation? It's those kind of decisions that appeal to me.

2 things watching that 2-part video...

1- The whole area reminded me of Banjo-Kazooie/Banjo-Tooie and made me think how a Rare platformer on the Wii would look like. I meant this as a compliment, not like OMG LOL N64 GRAPHIX ON THE DUCT-TAPED GAEMCUBE LOLZ

2- The opening of that chest at the end... I had the Zelda music playing in my head during that scene. Heh.

Oh, and... yeah, this game looks great. I'll buy it.

Doesn't look that fun to me, hence the whole point of my post. And just cause there's an accomplished and praised figurehead attached to a project doesn't always guarantee anything.

Yeah, I wasn't proclaiming it to be an amazing feat, even though I'll admit that the wording of my post might lead you to think that. I was merely bringing it up. And it doesn't really matter if it's an auto-facing sprite attached to a sphere or a fully-modeled geometry in my eyes. All that matters is that it was executed to serve the achieve its purpose.

But it does look fun to me. So there. ;)

Warren Spector is about the only developer who hasn't had a bad game attached to his resume. I think it guarantees that the game will be good.

I have to say, I'd have to agree with what's quoted above. This was my most anticipated game but those trailers just aren't doing it for me.

I hope this is not a case of Nuts 'n Bolts when people wanted a BK3 or this title cf Castle of Illusion.

If the game is not upto scratch it'll easily get lost in the pre-release hype of Metroid, Donkey Kong and Kirby.

The pedigree of the thing.

I'm trying to tell myself this isn't how I feel but I am also with you on this one. I love Warren Spector and I love his philosophies but the look of how this game plays, along with the execution leaves me with heavy skepticism. I totally see what he's trying to do and I love it but the whole "playing" part so far looks kind of redundant.

I'm going to split this into its own thread real quick.

Edit:

There we go.
Oh I see.

I thought RaidenZR decided to "rain on the parade" in two different threads. :lol I found the comments strangely familiar...

Cool, I missed this in the other thread. I'd love to see some sort of Dev Diary for this game.

I don't think his ears are sprites or just basic planes rotating with the camera just like the leaves in the mafia 2 comparison shot thread.

Mickey's ears aren't usually modeled as one piece with his head so it gives the animators the control to shift his ear position correctly wherever he is facing.

Whoops, the "Aren't they just sprites?" comment was in relation to a really old Mickey Mouse racing game by Rare.

I thought I had avoided moving any parts of the ear discussion to the new thread, but it seems I missed a post, and that one's especially confusing out of context.

Oh my/our bad :P

Wait, time the fuck out, Nirolak's a mod now? *feels friggin late with this* :lol

Also, game is still amazing looking in terms of animations and style. From what little I can see of the gameplay as well, this might just be a great holiday treat for myself as well. :D

I'm really looking forward to this, but still concerned that the gameplay will fall a bit short. It looks enjoyable, but there's something 'off' about the mechanics shown so far. The platforming, the painting/thinning concept, etc. Its all a good idea in theory, but I'm not totally convinced that the execution will be really amazing (though likely enjoyable).

If there's one criticism I'd bet on its that the camera will probably suffer the same problems many 3D adventure games, especially Wii games, are plagued with.

you want people to explain their excitement specifically after your vague criticism? amazing.

Having played it, it feels a lot like Galaxy. There's a bit more sliding after landing, and some more weight to jumping then in Mario, but apart from that the basic movement and controls layout is Galaxy. Personally I felt it worked really well, and there seems to be put a lot of thought into the basic traversal level design.

In regards to the camera, when I talked to Warren he was fairly honest about the camera not working perfectly all the time (he was saying no camera was perfect, and he could break it in any game out there), but he felt that Junction Point had a very special problem with players being able to remove the environment around them, therefore making it much harder for the automatic camera to place itself optimally, but they've been doing a lot of work to make that work. But as he said, it will not be perfect and it will never be in any game ever.

Similar to what they did with Astroboy's hair for the movie.
