If YOU could create a country how would you do it?

With all of the recent complaining in the political threads about bullshit parties and the state of America I'd like to see what some level headed posters think how a country should be run.

Imagine that you can create your own country, how would you decide to run it?

What type of government philosophy would you use?
What type of economic structure?
What social freedoms would and wouldn't be allowed?
How would you crack down on crime?
Will you focus much, if at all, on social welfare?

Etc.

Well make sure to at least update it a little!

And iron out any ambiguities.

It'd be an intelligence based democracy, but a real democracy, not a republic in the guise of one. Actual votes from the public seen to be intelligent enough for their opinion to matter, not having them elect people to make the decisions for them.

That's another thing I'll do:
- All mention of religion banned from political situations and scenarios.
- Elections will be completely anonymous, only your ability to make logical arguments in favor of one policy or against another will get you elected.

Very high minimum wage. Salary/personal wealth caps. Socialized medicine. Big and generous govenment funded social saftey net. Corporations can't outsource. Very restricted trade with other countries. Very restricted immigration. Very strict reproduction limits, with government mandated abortions if necessary. Age limits. Legalized weed. Pornography outlawed. Secular government with seperation of church and state. Severe tax on churches. School uniforms. No governmental funding of the arts in any way, shape or form. Music, and art never taught in public schools.

Semi American-style Democracy, but the constitution would heavily emphasize state rights and not much else. Every human being, regardless of sex, ethnicity, or criminal status, would be able to participate in the system, though. Illegal immigrants would be limited to participating at the local (community) level.

The federal government would be limited strictly to defense and a few carefully-outlined social safety nets. State rights would reign supreme for just about everything, which would likely speed along the legislative process nicely. Don't like Texas' stance on gay marriage? Move. Don't like California's sales tax? Move. Etc. Not ideal, but would stop alot of controversy before it even started. Progressives could flock to California and create their liberal-Utopia if they so desired; same goes for the religious-types and Bible-land. Win-win, IMO.

EDIT: Military or Peace Corp-type service would be mandatory for a number of years.

Utopian dream. Simply put you will never have this happen because people will always key in on what they like more about a candidate. Could be the voice, looks, style of writing, college preference, party affiliation, literally anything.

Also, it's wrong in the sense that someone's ability to make an argument may not correspond to their actual governing abilities. There are certain people who are experts at debate and forming ideas into words but simply aren't as capable as their opponent.

Put in some kind of screening program and you open the process to a whole world of biases and corruptions.

Fact is in a free society, you just have to trust the people and make sure they have the best education you can provide.

The best way to improve the political process is to make all education free and of a very high quality.

I'd start out by giving every neighborhood their own tank and giving every person a gun. Dunno where to go from there!

That is some schizophrenic shit.

Legal weed but no porn? C'mon man!

This is quite the dystopian nightmare you dreamed up.

Has anyone done a history of American views on the American constitution? The way it's approached today really does have a lot of similarities to how people treat a religions text. I'm sure it hasn't always been like that.

I would have term limits for every elected official, corporations wouldn't be allowed to make any political contributions, no lobbyists, and people would be required to take I.Q. and current events tests to get licenses to vote so they would have to be at least somewhat intelligent and aware of the issues.

I'd summon the God of yor and with their power i would draw from the earth a mighty volcano. Ash and lava would be spewed from the earths cores and my island would begin to take shape. I would then ship tonnes and tonnes of the most fertile soil and mix it with the volcanic ash to make it even for productive.

Then would begin a ten year quest to scour the globe for the most ideal flora and fauna to inhabit my island and make it complete. While im at it i might get some hot sluts as well, then spend my time fuckin and planting trees.

I'm thinking porn, at best, demeans and objectifies women and fetishizes men's view of sex, and, at worst, leads to the physical and mental abuse of women.

It's easy to point out things we don't like about the US, but it is notoriously hard to create a working government. The United States Constitution is the oldest written constitution still in use. That is remarkable considering how much the world has changed in ~250 years. For those advocating some other form of government, you can probably find another country somewhere that has that government. It would probably even cause less upheaval in your life to move to a new country than putting a new government in place in the United States.

99% of readers here aren't educated enough about economics to even make an intelligent case for socialism or capitalism. I'm certainly not with my one class of AP Macroeconomics 8 years ago. Putting aside whether or not socialism works, many of the arguments between some degree of socialism and capitalism boil down to the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. I strongly favor equality of opportunity.

On to the changes I would make:

Require prospective voters to pass a test demonstrating knowledge of all candidates' policies on key issues for any race they want to vote on. Voting participation would decrease, but voters would be making more informed decisions. It would also encourage candidates to spend more time making their views clear and less time attacking opponents.

Also this site has some good ideas:

Technically, it's not in use at all. You can't even bring up the word in a court room or they'll throw you out. It doesn't apply.

Would all depend where I am on the tech tree.

And if that bastard Montezuma was nearby or not.

I'd give SmokyDave a shot at his authoritarian, chav-eliminating dream.

I'd put an explosive device in his brain, though. Just in case.

What kind of budget we talking about? How big of a country? What sorts of resources available? etc. Way too many factors too consider. There ain't just 1 magical type of government that will work for every country.

I'm a simple man. A state revolving around myself as God-Emperor.

  • What type of government philosophy would you use?

Meritocracy

  • What type of economic structure?

Caps.

  • What social freedoms would and wouldn't be allowed?

No slavers, seriously. Those guys are dicks.

  • How would you crack down on crime?

Upgraded securitrons.

  • Will you focus much, if at all, on social welfare?

Nope.

Which race of people would you allow to populate the country?

Yes, because all porn is made for and watched only by men.

I'm trying to square the image of this sculpture with the image of Dave Chappelle's reenactment of it: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal....n*gger get me a SAMMICH!"
