NINTENDO DS AND WII SET NEW U.S. SALES RECORDS IN 2010

Nintendo DS Becomes All-Time Best-Selling Video Game System; Wii Sells More Than 7 Million for Third Consecutive Year

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 4, 2011 - The close of 2010 produced two sales milestones for Nintendo in the United States.

According to Nintendo's internal sales figures, the Nintendo DS™ family of portable video game systems has sold more than 47 million in the United States since the original model launched in November 2004. That tally makes Nintendo DS the nation's best-selling video game system of all time.

For the second major milestone of 2010, Nintendo's internal figures show that the Wii™ home console marked its third consecutive calendar year with U.S. sales of more than 7 million - a feat never before accomplished in the history of video games by a home console. To date, the Wii system has sold more than 34 million in the United States alone.

"When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed."

Nintendo is set to release its new Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system in the United States in March. The portable system lets players see 3D content - without the need for special glasses. More details about the system will be announced in the future.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://wii.com. For more information about Nintendo, visit http://www.nintendo.com.

Prepare for a 2013 launch?

So how many did they sell in december ? Someone should do the math quick....

"only" ~13 million more DS sold then Wii? That is a bit surprising to me. Thought the gap would be bigger.

Honestly, so would I. The DS has been around since late 2004 (late 2006 for Wii), and has been through 3 revisions (compared to none for the Wii).

Thats the thing - people really dont realize how many wii consoles where sold in only 4 years..... as far as i know its still outselling the ps2 for the same time period.

Biggest news to me was confirmation that the 3DS would be out in March here. Was that finalized before or just assumed?

Was officially stated at the 29th Sept conference that Europe and the US would get it in March.

So probably a fair bit less than last year then. Still impressive though!

How about DS?
Maybe I'm remembering wrong but didn't last years Nintendo pr end up lowballing the Wii quite a bit?

Indeed, last year Nintendo said that the Will sold over 3 million units in December. The final figure came to 3.8 million units.

Doing the maths on these numbers both DS and Wii have sold around 2.3m units last December in the US which would be considerably down from last year for both platforms but still very impressive nevertheless. Especially the DS LTD figure which puts it as the best selling system in the US.
Hopefully we'll get more numbers from Microsoft and Sony at CES :D

it just shows Nintendo will release Wii2 when they think it's the right time and not when some gaf whiners say that the fad is over

OK, so :

Wii > 2.3M

DS > 2.3M

But probably down YoY otherwise Nintendo would have bragged about breaking the record for December hardware sales twice in a row.

Why the 7 million mention for Wii ? Does aynone have the YTD sales for 2008 and 2009 ? If they were both above 8 millions, then it would mean that this year sales were between 7.0M and 7.9M

Everyone knew they would be down YoY, Wii cant top 3.8 million again and the 3DS is comin...but they still did pretty good.

Was going to say that sounds a good bit down from last year. Not that 7 million still isn't something. Should make for interesting NPD next week. Wondering if this is like last month with the post BF figures before MS numbers hit. I don't know though looking at Dec I still was thinking Wii on top. Overall it sounds like somewhere under 3 million for the month or possibly slightly over. What was their LTD last year? 8 million plus right?

Yeah. The Wii probably sold just over 3 million units. That figure would be considerably down from last year's figures but still in line with the November to Docember MoM increase we can expect for the Wii.

If it is we're looking at around 2.8 or 2.9 million units. Personally I think that the other side of 3 million is more likely.

I don't remember Nintendo doing any type of press release for it (Maybe I missed it). I figured if the DS passed the PS2's WW number there would have been some fanfare.

How far behind the PS2 is the DS on the worldwide sales record number?

I don't know if Sony will give the PS2 numbers for 2010. And if the do, the numbers will likely be shipped to retail, not to customers. So, difficult to say.

Paracelsus said:

In shipped numbers they were at 135m versus 150m at the end of September WW.
We'll have to wait until the end of January/early February to get numbers updated at the end of December. But it should happen during this year unless DS sales suddenly collapse when 3DS is launched.

At this point, the shipped to retail numbers aren't likely to be far ahead of the sales to consumers figures.

I think that PS2 is around 147 million WW if memory serves. DS has passed PS2 in the US and Japan, so it all depends on how it compares in Europe (though I reckon it's probably ahead by now)

Wait a minute....there US totals are larger than the competitions WW? Ouuuuuch.

Not sure how you would come to that conclusion without sales data in Europe. 360 should be over 25 million at the end of the year per NPD which is what Nintendo figures are reflecting here. Europe(360) was well over 9 million a long time ago.

TacticalFox88 said:

Ummm no because when you count in the expected WW Q3 sales for the competition, 360 will be over 51m and PS3 around 48m.
DS still really close to the feat actually :lol but Wii no.

Edit: If you're talking about actual sales as gathered by NPD, Media Create.......there's no way to know precise sales from Europe and other markets.

Can someone please explain the use of the word "floss" in this circumstance? Were these numbers squeezed through a really tight gap? ... yeah, I'm drawing a total blank.

DS shipments through September 2010 are 49.28 million.

If we don't get a response I guess it's safe to assume those dates were pulled from an ass.

It means Nintendo ate it up.

All I know, is that Wal-Mart was giving away $50 and then $75 gift cards with their Wii's in Dec. my store alone went through over 250 eazy, (esp. the red Mario bundle) I can only imagine if all the other stores did the same.
