GAF's "Greatest Games of All Time" 2011 Edition (Voting ends Feb. 13 11:59 P.M PST)

Drkirby

Corporate Apologist
Back in November of 2009, we had a vote on the Greatest game of all time, and I feel like now is a good time for anther vote. By waiting to the start of February instead of the beginning of November, it should of given people more time to reflect on the games from the past year or two, and specifically the games that came out during the holiday season. And while it may seem a bit early to some to do a review of such a degree again, I feel it would be interesting to see how the tastes of the overall community has shifted in only a year and a quarter.

Voting Format

While I encourage you to talk about why you voted for the games you did and what you enjoy about each and for general discussion, please keep the discussion part of your post and the voting separate. As such, I would like the tops of your posts to have the voting, and to be in this exact format. In fact, please just copy and paste it into your post, and edit it.

1: Game #1
2: Game #2
3: Game #3
4: Game #4
5: Game #5
6: Game #6
7: Game #7
8: Game #8
9: Game #9
10: Game #10

Please note the exact way the list is typed, and how they are numbed. It isn't "1." or "1 Game #1", or even "1:Game One" it is "1: Game One", the punctuation being in this exact way will make it far easier to sort the list. Number Colon Space, simple!

Also for the sake of making it easier to tally up the games, please simply copy and paste the games title the way it shows up on the English Wikipedia page for standardization. Use "Wario Land: The Shake Dimension" even if you are in the US, and "Star Fox 64" even if you are in Europe.

Also, for any title that shares the name with anther game (Like Sonic 2006, Prince of Persia 2008), please put the year in the title as such, "Prince of Persia (2008)". Similarly, for games that shares the same title but are significantly different from anther game that shares its name, put the Platform's acronym. For example "The Urbz (GBA)"

Voting Rules
  • The game must be out before voting starts. This shouldn't be to big of a problem this time around, but I am sorry if you think Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 or any other game release in the next two weeks is one of the best 10 games ever made, you will have to till next the next voting. Also, this means no demos, a few people tried to vote for the God of War 3 Demo and I tossed their votes out.
  • No compilations. I almost want to simply put "No Orange Box" since the orange box is a compilation of 5 games and about 20 or so people voted for that last time, but really, I can't think of any time a compilations would be alright to vote for ether. So no compilations.
  • Obviously, no joke lists.
[*]Your list must have 10 games on it.
No more, no less. You can bring up some more games, but you must at least have 10 games on it.

The Results
The Results will be presented in three ways, and the raw tally will be provided to the community in the form of a Google Docs Spread Sheet. The Three presented ways will be a count of the total number of votes, the count of the total number of #1 votes, and a weighed score that give a point value of 10 to #1, 9 to #2, and so on.

Thank you all, and happy voting!

What are with the 10 PC parts? Please, don't put that in.

And you must keep this list handy to be able to respond so fast.

Oh god, I need to decided now though if I should let people put in a platform or not. Eh...

Yes, Episode 1, 2, and base will be counted as different games this time, and this will apply to any episodic games (IE, you would have to vote for an individual episode of a Telltale game.)

Does anyone have an objection?

Edit: lljride, Label, use colons!

It's a pity we're not going with discussion, one of the reasons why this year's GOTY thread was a significantly better read than previous years was because people actually put an effort into their posts. Personally I find the voting pretty secondary to reading peoples opinions. *shrugs*

I am hoping there is some discussion, but yes this topic's primary goal is to get a simple count. The results from the last vote got a good 700 posts of pure discussion though.

It's always good to see people justify their vote, though. The GotY thread didn't require anything but a list either but many people still took the effort to explain their vote.

1: Ocarina of Time
2: Metal Gear Solid
3: Final Fantasy VI
4: Majora's Mask

It is, I find it odd that the topic has gone so far without a single person try to yet. Did I scare them all into not doing it? I just wanted to keep the list and the discussion separate.

1.Final Fantasy VII

5: Silent Hill 2
6: Super Street Fighter II Turbo
7: Grand Theft Auto III
8: Starcraft

Wow, that was incredibly difficult. It would be easier if it was Top 20 and I didn't have to order them.

The order is always the hardest part for sure, but I find the longer the list the harder it is for me because I am terrible at picking favorites.

I just feel bad because there is a good amount of other games that I feel like I am dishonoring by not including them on the list, but I guess when you've been gaming for 20 years you're gonna have a lot of good stuff to choose from.

When I made my list, I tried to not include two entries in the same series. This way I could open my mind up and include other deserving games from different developers and genres.

It could be the formatting. You also don't make much of a point about it in the OP.

Drkirby said:

OP says to go with the name in the Wikipedia entry, so go with the European name. It'd be a shame to see X-Com get screwed over because people weren't using the right name.

On a related note, Jesus Christ, 4 votes for X-Com on the first page alone!?

That's a neat idea. Otherwise my list will probably be dominated by Mario and Zelda games.

Oh, do you want them to go?
I only put them there as the original titles had them like that!

1: Yoshis Island
2: Super Mario Galaxy 2
3: Super Mario Galaxy
4: The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
5: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
6: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
7: Super Mario 64
8: Super Mario World
9: Banjo-Kazooie
10: Sonic the Hedgehog 2

If it was one per series this list would be way more varied, but Mario and Zelda series are so awesome, I couldn't list less game of these series. At first I even were to put Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3 or NSMBW in here, too, but I wanted to give Banjo and Sonic at least a little chance to shine. Too bad for alle the other great games I love ^^.

No, I mean between the number and the name.

For example "1. Final Fantasy VII" should be "1: Final Fantasy VII", notice how it is a colon and not a dot.

Also, while limiting a series works decently when doing a nomination round, when going with absolutes if someone thinks multiple games for the same series are of the top ten games they have ever played, then I say let them. It would just skew the results to do otherwise.

1: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2: Super Smash Bros. Melee
3: F-Zero GX
4: Super Mario Bros. 3
5: Kirby's Adventure
6: Mario Kart Wii
7: The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX
8: Warioware: Twisted!
9: SSX Tricky
10: Super Mario 64

Runners-up, probably in order:
Rhythm Tengoku
Space Channel 5 Part 2
Sonic Rush
SSX 3
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Um Jammer Lammy
Donkey Kong Country Returns
Sin and Punishment 2: Star Successor
Tales of Eternia
Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
Super Castlevania IV

Discussion:
Lately, I've been addicted to SSX. It was very hard to make this list, fitting in SSX where it deserves to be.

SSB Brawl is not on the list because I haven't played it enough. I really am beginning to feel like it's quantity over quality (and I don't mean the fighting... I mean the music, stages, etc) so I don't think it'd make my Top 10 anyway.

There are a lot of runners-up here. That's because I picked a bunch of games I consider to be "one of the greatest games I've ever played" and made a top 10. I may have purposely missed some that I knew wouldn't make Top 10, like a bunch of Zelda, Mario, and Tales of games. So don't hang me for no Mario World. It's a freaking awesome game, but I knew it wouldn't make my Top 10 list.

The first platform listed is my favorite platform for that game. So I like San Andreas more on the PC than on the PS2.

1: Xenogears
2: Final Fantasy IX
3: Alundra
4: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
5: Suikoden II
6: Final Fantasy VII
7: Wild ARMs
8: Xenosaga III
9: Uncharted 2
10: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker

1: Starcraft
2: Quake 3 Arena
3: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4: Fallout
5: Metroid Prime
6: Doom
7: Grim Fandango
8: Braid
9: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
10: Resident Evil 4

Starcraft and Quake 3 at the top since I've played them soooo much, and they're basically what I consider to be near-perfect. They're fun to play, they're fun to be really good at (not that I've ever been that :P) and they're fun to watch other people play.

Ocarina of Time was probably my first gaming love so yeah. Cliché but whatever.

I almost randomized the ranking on the 4-10 places since it's impossible to say whichever is better of them. Fallout is still probably the best complete package in RPG's to this day, at least no later game has done it so well. Good quests, loads of options, good writing and perfect graphical design. The combat is simple but fun, which again is more than most other RPG's offer.

Metroid Prime was a great merger between adventuring and shooting. It really captured the feeling of exploring an unknown planet.

Doom is incredibly fun and the second or third PC game I ever played. It scared the shit out of me and never fails in getting my blood pumping, even all these years later.

Grim Fandango is one of the last truly great adventure games. The setting, the sometimes dark turns and the really nice puzzles made it the most rememberable, though I almost feel like replacing it with a Monkey Island game.

Braid was incredibly well made, the graphics and the music mix perfectly with the gameplay. It has some of the best homages to classic video games I've seen but at the same time creates it's own image instead of relying on them.

Playing through Sands of Time this last summer again made me appreciate it's design even more than ever. The way the levels blend together, the wonderful feel of magic in both story and atmosphere, and the cool acrobatics makes it a winner.

Resident Evil 4, finally, was a little more action than I wanted from it, and not as scary as it should have been. Regardless it's a top-notch action game with a ton of suspense, cool set pieces and a healthy length on top of it. I was never, ever bored.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario 64
3. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
4. Perfect Dark
5. Tales of Symphonia
6. Skies of Arcadia
7. The Banjo Kazooie
8. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
9. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

1-3 is stamped. 4-10 is pretty random and could change from month to month actually.

The question for me in these threads is whether I decide to go with my personal favorite games or the games I think are quantitatively the "best" games.
