Rumour: Rainbow Six Set to Invade New York With Home-Grown Terrorism

A new interpretation of the classic Rainbow Six, the tough-as-nails tactical shooter that asked gamers to carefully plan out the nuance of a breach like a choreographed dance, is in the works, a source familiar with the unannounced Ubisoft shooter tell Kotaku.

We've also heard that the game will in many ways be a departure from the sameness found in Rainbow Six: Vegas and its sequel, and a return to what helped separate the shooter from others of its ilk.

It's unclear if the in-development game will be shown at E3.

The original Rainbow Six is more tactical and focused on stealth than on weapons. Before each mission, in those early games, players were asked to view a briefing and then build a team, pick their weapons and equipment and finally create waypoints that the secondary members of the team would follow. Once the mission started, players had only control of one team member at a time.

Rainbow Six will be a far more story-driven game than previous iterations of the Tom Clancy branded title. The game is meant to take a step in a different direction, telling a bigger, much more gritty cinematic story than previous versions of the game.

In this still-to-be-titled Rainbow Six, players will be tasked with stopping a homegrown terrorist group operating in America. The group, fed up with the greed of Wall Street and the government that acts to protect them, decides to target New York City.

While the gameplay is based on some classic Rainbow Six mechanics, there is a brand new cover system that takes you out of the first-person perspective and into the third.

A new icon-rich graphics style helps to highlight members of your team during a mission and other pertinent information.

Contacted Thursday, Ubisoft declined to comment.

So... people sure love setting games in New York. Also, new Rainbow 6! Maybe!

Edit: This snap was used as the header for the article. Leaked screen?

So by making it more cinematic they're probably making it even less of a tactical shooter than Vegas was? Sigh.

Isn't this exactly how cover worked in Vegas?

Same here.

What's new about the third person cover system? They've already done that.

Also, I'm not so sure I'd want to stop terrorists targeting Wall Street crooks.

I take it they didn't play the vegas games then.

Maybe it's a typo and they meant "second person". When you get into to cover you get to watch from your enemy's perspective as you shoot them.

Hmm, that could actually be cool somehow.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
When do we get to blow the shit out of San Francisco?

Give New York a break.

I can add this to the Ubisoft franchises that get talked about but take FOREVER to actually see the light of day.(Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six)

So did somebody, like, map out in 3D the entirety of the main areas of New York and are now selling the 3D data so people can use it or what?

Would be cool if the game takes place in tight situations like some of the missions in the OG RS games instead of in the open streets. Casino was the best part of Vegas. Hostage situations in hotels or some other building with small rooms.

This is one of the largest reasons to why I didn't like Vegas. Bring back Rainbow Six 3 =;(
I'll give this one a chance though, no doubt.

Rainbow Six Vegas was the first game I played in HD (and my 2nd PS3 game). The jump from SD to HD was mind blowing, made me a believer. Am looking forward to this, i've always liked Rainbow Six as long as they don't fuck it up with dumb shit.

First Hitman, now R6...nobody cares about a big budget story; in both cases, that's at the bottom of the totem pole of things fans want from a sequel. Also, it would be nice to travel the globe again and ditch the whole 'bopping around one city on a helicopter' shtick that Vegas did (especially in New York), but whatever...I'll take a new Rainbow in any form.

Finally, another Rainbow Six game!

I'm already hyped. As long as the gameplay itself remains realistic and deep I'll be happy.

If you told me that was a screen from console Crysis 2 I honestly wouldn't know the difference, NYC has definitely become overused. That being said, about fucking time for a new Rainbow Six, bring back larger squads, limited health, and permanent squad kos please.

And a pre-mission planning stage plz.

What helped separate it was the planning stuff. I'm guessing they're not going to bother with that in this one still.

It's been over 3 years since Vegas 2 at this point, so it's time for a new game/reboot of Rainbow 6. Hopefully it will turn out better than the mediocre game laced with a few choice nuggets of good (e.g. Terrorist Hunt) that Vegas 2 was.

Yep, I'm done with video games. Bye gaf.

Remains to be seen if it's actually set in New York or some game designer's idea of what New York must be like from the 4 or 5 post cards a producer handed him.

Who gives a shit where it is. You've played in most cities and environments distinct enough to care in games anyway. I'm excited to see footage of this game in action. Love R6.

Wait. Why am I trying to kill these terrorists again? Not playing if this is just about protecting bankers.
