So what's the best place for webhosting?

Hey GAF, I'm going to start a website that will be focused on podcast.

I just want something cheap where I can host as many podcasts as I want without worrying about going over the limit.

I found this top 10 ranking but not sure if those sites are sketchy or not.

Also, how do ads on websites work?

Well dude I host on 1and1.com and it's pretty reasonable. It's a place to start looking. The web stats package is kind of bleh, though you can download log files and use whatever reporting program you like.

I've used Dreamhost, and it's been fine. I've heard some people say it's gone down hill slightly though.

Bluehost is another good one.

IDK... a lot of hosting is sort of antidotal because most probably haven't used a ton of different ones.

Best suggestions I can give you are these...

1) DO NOT USE HOSTING SITES TO SEARCH FOR DOMAINS

Some places buy domains that people search for so you have to get the domain from them.

2) Find a host that uses CPanel

3) Pick your CMS of choice to use with CPanel be it Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal etc...

4) Make sure you get unlimited bandwidth if you want to host larger(ish) podcast files

5) Google for Coupon codes... usually you can find a bunch of hosts that fit the 1st 3 so go with the one that seems reputable and has the best coupon deal...

Easiest way to go is get a host... use cpanel to install wordpress... grab a wordpress theme and customize it to your liking for your site... grab the appropriate plugins you want for your site to add things like photo streams, twitter feeds, rss feeder etc... add in your content and get it the way you want it...

Then when your done sign up for Google Adsense... They handle it all for you, and you can basically copy and paste the ad code into your wordpress website. Google does the rest. Don't expect it to cover much though as you get jack in terms of $$$ for ads unless your site is BIG.

Why is Bluehost so much cheaper then Dreamhost?

Also how do ads work?

Finally, how do I go on designing a site so I can post my podcasts?

Hey I pushed post a head of time so reread my post. Just use wordpress and you can easily add in video or audio podcasts.

WordPress Podcasting!

PS: I'm your Linux brotha from another motha so just PM me if you got questions Flying!

I use Greengeeks.

Also, NEVER EVER REGISTER YOUR DOMAIN VIA YOUR WEBHOST. The moment you stop paying for their hosting service, they will take your domain name. If you do not re-up with them within two-three months, they will sell your domain name to a hoarding company.

This happened to me with Bluehost. They sold my domain name to hugedomain. Now they want $1450 for me to buy it back.

So register your domain with a third party, and use it with your hosting. for example.

I own my domain through namecheap

my hosting is via greengeeks.

Even if I stop paying for greengeeks to host my stuff, I can move to a different hosting provide and have 0 domain name hassles.

K thanks.

Also I'll just go with Bluehost and use Wordpress with it.

i bought a domin with go daddy now where can i make my website for free?

Ah, I was going to say if you're an actual developer than any of these host site suck. You'd want something like Linode.

- What do you guys mean about "Do not register my website name?"

- If I change my mind and want to do my website in Flash or HTML5 instead of Wordpress, could I do that with any host site?

- How do ads work? Do I get paid with those?

From that list I can say from personal experience avoid:

Bluehost
Hostgator
GoDaddy

I'm currently with Downtown Host and they're pretty decent, although their support has been going slightly downhill due to new hires.

Wordpress 3.2 has an HTML5 theme installed as default....

Google Adsense for Ads!!

What is Wordpress exactly?

It isn't a webhosting service.

Is it like a program built into Dreamhost?

Open Source Content Management System aka CMS... other CMS include say Drupal (Whitehouse.gov runs on this) or Joomla...

It basically is a framework to help you manage your content. Wordpress comes with it's own control panel. You can do basically EVERYTHING from there. Write posts, create users, add plugins, install themes etc... as well as manually edit the CSS file and such.

It also has a nifty auto update feature. So whenever a new version or a security update comes out you can just press one button, and boom update done!

Everyone from the RHCP to CNN use this shit. It's just an easy way to create a website. Wodpress.ORG is the official site for the software. Remember .ORG as .COM is a free to pay host deal that is a Wordpress.ORG offshoot.

WordPress names each of their releases after Jazz greats. They also do a video preview for each release.

Watch the Wordpress 3.2 preview video HERE!!!

WP can be manually installed and is it's own deal. It's so popular though that most hosts all have one click installs or use CPanel to help you install WP (or something similar) since it's so ubiquitous. So basically no technology is needed to install. CPanel or the like installs and hooks all of the shit like apache, mysql, and wordpress all together. Then you just go!

It's as easy as 1..2..3.. and so many people use it there are a gazillion websites you can use for examples, themes to pick from, plugins to add in, and tutorials for help!

PS: WordPress will blow your mind after you use it.

Great informer as always, thanks Bret.

One more question. Where do I go to register a domain?

Don't go to Godaddy. There will be those who say, "oh I've never had a problem," and such, but I've had friends who have had issues with them. They also jack up your renewal rates from what I've seen.

I also use Dreamhost and I've really had no complaints or problems with it, but I don't have any heavy-load sites or anything. I have a pretty big allowance there and it's reasonably cheap.

If you don't know a lot about the services and such, Dreamhost has some pretty easy set up for a lot of default packages and such. Simple 1-click installs of various things make it pretty easy if you know little.

You can register at most hosting companies (Dreamhost included). Some may include it as part of signing up.

*Edit*: Dreamhost throws in a domain registration for free:

Sign up for any of our hosting packages and we’ll throw in a .com, .org, .net, or .info domain registration free for the life of your hosting! That’s a $9.95/yr value – included free with every DreamHost hosting plan.

So I should do the top...

The real answer is site5.com

I've used them for seven years. No down time, instant customer service, cheap, very secure.

A friend of mine is a web programmer working with really large online client projects and swears by it.

I used JustHost for a number of years and was happy until they billed me wrong. Moved to iPage just recently.

iPage does two years at $80 right now

So basically you just say "install it" and the rest is done through the wordpress interface?
Including migrating an existing blog, for instance? (I know that option exists on wordpress.com , but I imagine the interface is different on a webserver)
And is the inclusion of stuff like Adsense on a WYSIWYG-basis or predetermined, like the wordpress.com approach?

I'm asking because I really want to stay as far away from anything involving code as much as possible.

I've been trying it out for an hour, and YES, you want it. There is no coding.

Just FYI, but I have been using Slicehost for two years and LOVE it. It's about to become Rackspace's Cloud service, though, although the underlying technology will stay unchanged, so it's all good.

Slicehost really isn't a Web host per se, though. It's a virtual machine that runs just about any popular distribution of Linux that you choose. I use it primarily as a Web server, but I like doing it this way because I have maximum flexibility. One of the main reasons I originally went with it was that I really wanted to use pgAdmin, but most hosts went with MySQL. And with Web hosts, I used to run into walls when I wanted to customize stuff or go the extra mile by using stuff they didn't have installed. Never a problem with a virtual machine, as you can install or do anything you want. Hell, if you just wanna play in Linux remotely, then so be it.

The website company I used to work for would host all their clients sites with Rackspace. I don't know what the bills were like but their service is unbelievable. I was our main contact for them and never had any issues they couldn't work out really quickly.

As long as you don't want to do your own theme you can stay away from coding. Either just go with the default theme and just replace the banner or find another suitable theme. It's all already basically done for you once you find a theme you like. Then you can just replace stuff with your own graphics, and then add/remove "boxes" of content. Throw some plugins, and boom your good to go. Literally does EVERYTHING for you. You just manage things from a little wordpress manager page that lets you type posts, add users, add plugins, run one click update etc...

Did you figure out podcasting yet Flying? I was busy so I didn't see your pms till now.

EDIT: Also because it's wordpress and you have logins as long as the website is up you can just login from anywhere and update your page easy. Just type your UserName/PW and your in the manager. Makes it easy to post from anywhere. They also have mobile apps for all platforms.

I've been using RimuHosting for about 10 years now and LOVE them. Great prices, reliable, and great customer service!!!

Tell them (kevitivity.com) sent you.

I like iPage. Just dropped from them, only because I ended up not using the site as I thought I would. Really nice cPanel, decent price, support was great etc...
