DLC
Several new functions will be added to the Nintendo eShop.
For one thing, after a software title is launched, content can be added to it via the Nintendo eShop. This is a feature a number of software creators have been looking forward to. With the Nintendo 3DS system update this time, we can create that desired circumstance, so we should see an increase in the number of applicable software titles that will be launched from now on.

Demo downloads
Another addition is the ability for the software publishers to provide the owners of Nintendo 3DS systems with demo versions of their software, for which they can put a limit on the number of trials. As you may know by now, the player reviews available at the Nintendo eShop have high credibility since only those who have played the subject software for one hour or more are eligible to cast a vote. More than one million reviews have been contributed to date worldwide. By combining this existing review mechanism with the demo versions, we would like to continue our endeavors to expand the number of opportunities for consumers to be able to notice the potential and appeal of new software titles.

Sleep mode download
In terms of its usability, we know that there still are several issues with the Nintendo eShop. We have made several improvements for this time. For example, software downloads can be done when Nintendo 3DS is in sleep mode, which will lessen the need for the users to patiently wait by while downloading several software titles at once or while downloading software with a large memory capacity.

eShop Access
Although this next feature is not going to be available with the next system update, we are now preparing for the Nintendo eShop to be available on the Web so that you can access it via PCs or smartphones too. As of now, the information available on our Nintendo eShop, including the reviews that I mentioned just now, is only available at the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS and it does not have a great affinity with the social media which are currently being used as a means to spread information. In other words, even if a software title receives an incredible review, majority of people will not know about it unless they access the Nintendo eShop with their Nintendo 3DS system.

We would like to solve this issue by making the Nintendo eShop accessible via PCs and smartphones as well. At the beginning, you will not be able to directly purchase software from your PC or smartphone. Instead, you will need to take a photo of a QR code at the Nintendo eShop by using the camera of your Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS will then open that specific page of the Nintendo eShop. That function is already included in the upcoming system update for the Nintendo 3DS. In the future, we will make it so that you will be able to purchase software by using your PC or smartphone,

Hulu Plus
Also in the U.S., Hulu Plus, which is a paid video distribution service operated by Hulu that was established primarily by a major TV network, is going to start on both the Wii and the Nintendo 3DS in the near future.

Not trying to lessen the impact here but I coulda sworn a lot of this was mentioned at the 3DS conference earlier in the month

We knew the eshop was going to update but we didn't know what was updating.

Well. At least they're trying. : |

Fucking Finally.

How can we purchase software from a browser without an account? Does this mean accounts are coming?
That what it looks like to me.

seems like nintendo is finally gonna release their stuff for iphone

can't wait!
After reading the statement, it seems you can buy eShop games using the iPhone (or any other smartphone for that matter), but you'd still need a 3DS to play it.

Thanks for joining us all here in the year 2005, Nintendo.
Eh, consoles and handhelds have different expectations.

I am glad about the spotpass demo downloads though. I like the thought of walking in, picking the system up and realizing i have a demo i can play immediately.

Okay that PC thing would be great if there was some way to sync with your 3DS since the 3DS can't do browser logins which is all my campus offers.

Oh shit glossed over that. What the hell does that mean?
Probably a limit on how many times you can play a demo or a timer before the demo expires. I do remember reading about how they wanted demos to automatically download during spot pass and would delete themselves over time.

what's this about limits in number of trials
I guess it just means that they can set a time limit or a 'life limit'. Once that limit is reached, it's no longer playable. The way it's worded makes it sound like it's optional.

As long as we get demo downloads, I'm happy.

Why would you limit a demo? I remember when EA did this for Dead Space 2. I thought I'd try out the demo to see if I should buy the game and the demo no longer worked. Why would you purposely destroy free marketing?

Sega did this for Sonic Generations too. It's just dumb.

I think the Japanese PSN does this. I remember that Atlus put a limit on the number of people who could download Catherine, and then they ripped it down from the service. They put it back up eventually, though. Sega took down some of the Yakuza demos as well.

Must be a Japanese thing?

Yeah, probably. I wonder which publishers or developers will be using that option though.

Bandwidth on PSN costs them money. They probably had a budget for those demos.

Actually, I'm just going to add the smartphone/PC stuff to your title and then make the other thread about the Wii U and Pokemon.

Thanks for making this.

The language Iwata uses on the download part is interesting:

That sounds like a download queue feature is gonna be added as well.

Also the eshop is gonna need some serious reorganizing like a dedicated demo section, dlc section, a better retail games section, etc and hopefully they'll get rid of the randomness of the current sections at the same time.

I like this part. I like it a lot.

He lists the downloading in sleep mode (which would only make sense with queuing) as one example, so presumably there are other usability changes coming.

I assume before they have an eShop specific site where we log in or whatever, they'll probably just put the QR codes on the pages for the software on Nintendo.com

But I still like the idea of being taken directly to the page to buy it. Half the time I can't even find a game or video or w/e by using the search function which pisses me off.

I know there will be more changes, I just hope Nintendo does it right which is far from certain given their track record.

Can we get this update now? I mostly want to play demos of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, but everything is truly great. I'm really interested in purchasing eShop games from PCs and smartphones. I hope it means we'll finally get an account that is not just tied to the system. I'm not too thrilled about DLC, but if it means more third parties jump on board, then I won't complain too much.

Yeah, the QR code thing is intended as a temporary step before full web-based purchases of eShop titles is implemented.

They better not do that. If that's what they are planning on using as accounts, then I'm fucked because CN doesn't exist in Sweden.
They will probably expand it to the rest of the world by that point most likely.

That's probably not really their decision. Bergsala is the Nordic distributor for Nintendo, and they have failed big time whenever they tried to do something like CN before. I doubt they will bother with it for something this big, and I also doubt that Nintendo really care about four small countries.

Yeah a web store is really useful. On Android, I barely use the Market app anymore, since it's much faster to search and look at the product information on a PC browser.

I know, but still...

*crosses fingers for accounts*

When is the initial update coming? Next month? Hope it doesn't get delayed over and over like the eShop update earlier this year.

I also hope that the new eShop's interface is structured well and easy to use.

The November update.

Odd, as the 3DS can do browser logins -- it's just a bit obtuse about how it does it.

Go to Settings, set up a new connection, and connect. You'll probably get an error message. Leave this new connection set up, then return to the home menu. Open the browser and attempt to go to any website -- it should pull up the login.
