LTTP: Wii - Help Me out!

I've succumbed to the hype of Xenoblade and plunged on a Wii. Well ok, I didn't really 'plunge' at all. I got a sweet ass deal - $85 for the Black Wii system w/RemotePlus and New Super Mario Bros bundle. Anyways, I've been fairly disappointed with JRPG's this generation and I'm hungering for a great one, so it seems the Wii was where I needed to go and here I am. So.......now what? :)

I know I need a component cable first off. Should I go for the official one or get an aftermarket one? Mind you, this is getting done today, so no Amazon or eBay or anything.

I'm also thinking I should get the classic controller(plus?) for Xenoblade. That sound right or is the normal remote fine?

I'm looking at getting a few of the casual Wii games as well, so probably another WiiRemote, too. I've already decided on getting Fishing Resort, but other than this, what are the best casual games like WiiSport or whatever? Preferably ones that I can play with others.

The games I plan on getting in the very near future(possibly today if I can find a good deal):

- Mario Galaxy
- Zelda: Twilight Princess
- Fishing Resort(will pay full-price for this cuz of $30 bundle)
- Wii casual party game based upon GAF recommendation

Long term:

- Mario Galaxy 2
- Zelda: Skyward Sword

Other than that, I'm not quite as informed about the other games. I'd be happy with just these, but I'm also curious about Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil 4, The Last Story, and Kirby's Epic Yarn. If there's other gems I'm missing let me know. Also, WiiWare - is there anything good here?

I've yet to check out whats available on the Virtual Console, but I have a feeling there might be some classics I'll be pretty interested in, too, but I'm worried that old SNES games or whatever will look terrible on my 42" widescreen TV when all stretched out. What do y'all think?

Anyways, any help and recommendations are highly appreciated. If there's some other Wii ownership hints, they are very welcome as well.

I'm excited! This'll be my big gaming purchase of the year and my last system for a couple years at least(so no PS3 or 3DS, but thats ok).

Get Sin and Punishment 2.

Both No More Heroes games if you like wacky and strange Japanese action games.

RE4 is fine on Wii as well. But I didn't really like the pointer controls. The extras are good, but it's not a must if you already have other versions. I'd recommend the HD ports over it.

Definitely Resident Evil 4. I'm sure it's pretty cheap right now.

I also like having Resident Evil Remake and Zero each on a single disc.

My favorite Wii titles:

-Fragile Dreams
-Xenoblade
-Punchout!!
-Skyward Sword
-Mario Galaxy 2
-RE4 (though this isn't a must have if you have other versions)
-Umbrella/Darkside Chronicles
-Donkey Kong Country Returns
-Kirby's Return to Dreamland
-Go Vacation
-Fishing Resort
-Harvest Moon: Magical Melody (assuming you don't have the GCN version or care about the female part being taken out)
-Rune Factory Frontier
-Monster Hunter Tri
-Arc Rise Fantasia
-Metroid Prime Trilogy (but getting all three games individually for cheaper is fine too)
-Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
-Little King's Story
-Muramasa
-Warioland Shake It
-Mega Man 9/10
-House of the Dead 2/3 and Overkill
-Zak & Wiki
-Metal Slug Anthology
-Dawn of Discovery

And surpisingly, the VC games do not look all that bad on my HD TV, but the one I use for Wii is a 32 inch, 720p, so I don't know what it would look like on bigger TVs.

Oh hai:

I'll sell you my copy for $10,000.

Yea, not too big on whacky Japanese stuff. I'm pretty open-minded overall, though. There's not too many genres that I just wouldn't play out of stubborness.

I was looking and just saw that Final Fantasy VI is on the Virtual Console. Oh god yes. Please, please tell me the audio is as good as on the SNES and that it looks ok on a bigger TV? Its in my top 2 favorite games ever.

Excellent, thank you.

@component cable: You can get an aftermarket one - i have one too and it works fine.

@classic controller: You should at least get one for Xenoblade. The Pro-version is really not that necessary.

@casual wii games: imho Warioware is an amazing party game for the Wii. Wii Party is also decent.

@Wiiware: LostWinds 1 and 2 are both really great. check them out.

EDIT:

A gem for the Wii people tend to miss is 'Little King's Story'. One of the best yet most overlooked games on the Wii.

Since you're open minded, you don't really need a Classic Controller unless you wanna play fighting games or similar, or use the VC. Almost every other game works great without one, even those you might not have expected them to, like Monster Hunter Tri.

I'd advice against Fishing Resort, I was hyped for it but after a friend imported it I don't care any more if we get it or not, environments look cheaply made despite the pretty screenshots they make for, the way they're set up and the camera work allowed etc, and the controls and fishing aren't even as fun as Twilight Princess fishing imo. But others seem to like it I guess.

Get Endless Ocean 2 (not as a replacement, just cos few people are bound to recommend it).

Well, the game recommendation part seems to be covered, so I'll give you a hardware tip: don't leave it on standby all the time, especially with Connect 24 on. It'll increase the chances of your Wii going belly up in the future.
To be honest, you shouldn't leave anything standby all the time, but still.

I'm currently browsing through the VC games and I think I'm gonna get a good amount of use from it.

- Final Fantasy VI
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors
- Secret of Mana
- Zelda: Majora's Mask

Just so far, I'm about to shed a tear of happiness.

I haven't hooked everything up yet and tried it out, but what is Connect 24? I usually do turn off any console I'm not using.

Well, it IS the SNES version with perfect emulation. Dunno about how it looks on a bigger TV.

:D

Another question: Do I need an SD card if I'm getting a bunch of VC games or does the Wii have enough HD space for a good amount of them?

Also, it seems most of the games are like 800-1000 points. What is the conversion of points to dollars?

I'd strongly recommend a Classic Controller Pro, because it's my favorite controller I've ever used.

1000 = $10

I haven't hooked everything up yet and tried it out, but what is Connect 24? I usually do turn off any console I'm not using.

It's a service that updates some various programs on the Wii, like Everybody Votes. When it's on, the Wii pulls about 2 watts (versus under 20 when it's on). If you turn it off, the wii shuts off completely and doesn't draw any power.

1000 = $10
Thanks. A bit steeper than I expected, but not too bad.

If you want a CCPro, look for the Monster Hunter 3 bundle. It's like 10$ more than the controller by itself.
Is that game fun by yourself still?

Also, do the VC games ever go on sale like with XboxLive Arcade?

As someone who played very little Wii I can recommend you what I thought were really good games.

  1. Super Mario Galaxy
  2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  3. No More Heroes
  4. No More Heroes 2
  5. Metroid Prime Trilogy
  6. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Although I haven't finished it yet)

I probably missed something but those were my favs

Yes! Monster Hunter Tri is awesome by yourself. It also has online, and the 3DS version is likely localized soonish (has expansion content, but no online). And it is so good with the CCP.

VC games never go on sale.

Good to know.

Ok, I'm off to work out and then raid my local gaming shop to see if I can find a couple of the games I need right now. I'll back in a bit to check on this thread and do some more research on what else I should be picking up.

Thanks guys.

100 points = 1 dollar
So, IIRC Nes/MasterSystem are 500 points ($5) Snes/Genesis are 800 points ($8) and N64 are 1000 points ($10).

The wii has 512Mb storage memory, if you only get VC games it should be enough.

Get the Nintendo Component cables, some versions of 3rd party ones have color/pixel loss issues.

I would recommend CCPro over the standard one.

For non nintendo games, Muramasa the Demon blade,House of the dead over kill, No more heros are worth while.

Helpful thread, as I am also (re)purchasing a Wii for Xenoblade/Last Story.

And holy crap at the Metroid Collection price. I used to own the game and a Wii, but lost both to my ex.. I'm contacting him now to see if he still has the game and would give it back to me..

- Wii casual party game based upon GAF recommendation

Mario Kart Wii is a safe bet, it's easy to pick up and play. Super Smash Bros Brawl is a bit more challenging to learn but has a really deep single player experience.

Boom Blox Bash Party and Wii Party are fun, though they're not simultaneous multiplayer IIRC.

If you like New Super Mario Bros Wii, I'd also recommend Kirby's Return to Dreamland.

And if you want a good Tetris game, Tetris Party (WiiWare) is great.

Good to know.

Another thing to consider is to start up a Club Nintendo account. Every month, they offer some VC downloads for 100 coins. It can be a hit-or-miss with the titles though. Right now, they only have Art Style: Cubello available, but that will change come this Sunday. Previously, they had the most excellent title Fluidity available.

I'm in the same position as the OP and followed your advice. Just bought the MH Tri + CCP pack from Amazon for $31.53 which is roughly $13 more than the CCP alone. I'm stoked.

Yesterday I bought a Black Wii with Wii Sports, Resort and a Wiimote Plus. I also ordered a $30 copy of Skyward Sword and my copy of Xenoblade is paid in full.

Arc Rise Fantasia. It's a great traditional JRPG that sadly got overlooked. The battle system is a lot of fun and, imo, it looks great for a Wii game. The only downside is the bad voice acting, but everything's subtitled anyway, so you can always just read ahead and skip the talking.

Excitebots is pretty amazing and you should get it. Sin and Punishment as well as No More Heroes are also great. I'd also go for Super Paper Mario, it's not an rpg but it's fun and the script is great. Is recommend MH, but that's a huge time sink and it sounds like you already have a bunch of stuff lined up.

Epic Yarn was crazy boring though, I'd stay away unless you get it for cheap so you can smile about how cool and creative the aesthetic is.

Contra Rebirth was great for WiiWare especially if you can get a friend to play it with you.

Also if you're going to get a CC, go for pro. I don't think they make the original anymore anyway, but the CCP is way better.

Ghost Squad is a fun, but short, game.

Mario Strikers is good for player vs player. And you can switch off the rules you don't like.

If you like baseball, MLB Power Pros (and 2008) are really great. I still play the 2008 version, because THQ didn't bring anymore of these fantastic games.

If you like soccer, maybe you should try one of the Pro Evolution Soccer. I like how it plays on Wii.

I don't know if you own a Gamecube, but there are many cube gems over there. You only need a GCN controller. I still play Mario Tennis with my friends (doubles 5 sets 6 games)

No mention of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories or Trauma Center: New Blood? You disappoint me, GAF.

Other recommendations:

Donkey Kong Country Returns (probably my favorite Wii game)
Metroid Prime 3 or Trilogy
Sin & Punishment 2
Zack & Wiki (much tougher than you'd expect)
Bit Trip Collection
World of Goo

Someone has mentioned Silent Hill: Shattered Memories yet, so I will recommend that, if you like adventure games, but necessarily other Silent Hill games. One of the most unique games on Wii.

I have also been digging Red Steel 2 recently, since you have a Wiimote+.

Ok, I'm back. Picked up a used component cable for $10, official one. Mario Galaxy for $16 and Twilight Princess for $15.

Oh hai:

I'll sell you my copy for $10,000.
I saw this at Gamestop for $65.

OP, four necessary games:

200px-A_Boy_and_His_Blob_(2009_video_game).jpg
I looked some stuff up about this game and it looked pretty cool. I saw it for $10. I'll probably pick it up some time later on.

If you like soccer, maybe you should try one of the Pro Evolution Soccer. I like how it plays on Wii.
I love soccer. I didn't even think about proper sports games. Which PES is the best?
