Last week’s third biggest new entry, Sega’s ‘London 2012: The Official Video Game’ is the only one of the three to increase in sales, climbing from No4 to No2 (+81%). Last week’s top new entry, Activision’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ drops from No2 to No3 (-15%) and the 2nd biggest new release from last week, 2K/Take 2’s ‘Spec Ops: The Line’ drops from No3 to No4 (-24%).
Switching to this week and it is the return of Koch Media’s smash hit ‘Dead Island’ in ‘Game of the Year Edition’ (includes all additional content previously only available digitally) as the highest new entry at No5. Note that ‘Dead Island’ was released last year in September and went on to become the 2nd biggest new IP of 2011, behind Rockstar/Take 2’s ‘L.A. Noire’. Also of note this week is the return of Activision’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ to the Top 10, up 26 places to No8 (+193%) thanks to across-the-board retail price promotional activity. MW3 therefore chalks up 30 of 35 weeks since launch within the Top 10 and is currently the 5th all-time highest unit seller in the UK and the 3rd in terms of revenue (behind ‘Black Ops’ and ‘MW2’).

Also new this week is Square Enix’s ‘Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy’ for 3DS at No19, a new twist in the series since this is in fact a rhythm game featuring music from the original Final Fantasy right up to FF XIII. The final new release within the Top 40 is EA’s MMO ‘The Secret World’ at No38 which was developed by Funcom, makers of ‘Anarchy Online’ (2001) and the more recent ‘Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures’ (2008). ‘The Secret World’ was a Tuesday release (74% of week 1 sales occurred within the first 24 hours) and is already the 6th game this year to release mid-week, compared to just 3 over the same time-scale of 2011.

I'd say that's pretty high for Theathrythm even if it is 2-3k.

Thats a pretty low debut for theatryhthm. With how sales have been that couldn't have been more than 2-3k.
What did you expect for such a title ? Start as no 1 and sellin 10k ?

I don't have a 3DS, but I tried the demo of Theatrhyhm yesterday. Very impressive little title, glad it made the Top 40.

For reference, I repost what I found about other FF games on portables ( remakes and spin-offs)

FFIII DS debuted at 11th in May in the All-Formats Chart. Its trend in the AFC

11-7-10-17-30, then three-four weeks between 30-40 and then disappeared.

On the contrary, FFIV, released in September...uhm, err...never appeared in the All-Formats Top 40.

Nor CC: Rings of Fate neither CC: Echoes of Time appeared in top 40.

Dissidia debuted at 10, then 16, then it disappeared.

For reference, I repost what I found about other FF games on portables ( remakes and spin-offs)

And once again I'm gonna tell you that back then the market was much stronger and simply comparing positions on the chart is not comparing like for like. The UK market has collapsed.

And once again I'm gonna tell you that back then the market was much stronger and simply comparing positions on the chart is not comparing like for like. The UK market has collapsed.

Unfortunately, it's the only thing we have. :(

Surely the situation in the UK will lead to some unwelcome consequences sooner or later? I just can't see how things can carry on as they are. Then again, what else can be done other than somehow hoping the industry improves?

Surely the situation in the UK will lead to some unwelcome consequences sooner or later? I just can't see how things can carry on as they are. Then again, what else can be done other than somehow hoping the industry improves?

It isn't just the UK. The whole of Europe is likely in a very similar situation with large percentage drops YOY.

US market is seeing the same kind of decline.

Funny how the Japanese and PC market are both up and both were considered dying markets a few years ago while the UK market was supposed to replace Japan as the 2nd biggest.

Unfortunately, it's the only thing we have. :(

I realise that but it's simply not painting the full picture. A #11 on the chart this year and last year wouldn't be comparable, never mind going two or three years back. We have to look at Theatherrhythm on its own merits:

Was the game cheap to produce? By the look of it, hell yeah.
Is it a big franchise? Well FF is, so yeah.
Is it a spin-off? Yes.
Is it overpriced? Hell yes, a rhythm game should NOT be 45 euro (or its equivalent in pounds).
Is it on the right console? Yeah it is, since 3DS has probably the best audience for these types of games from the current consoles on the market.

As such I'd say it performed ok-ish. I mean It could have performed better from the FF branding and from the game launching on 3DS and looking at the Japanese sales one would have expected better. At the same time the price is very oft-putting. Still, I'd say Square is happy with the result.

Still, I'd say Square is happy with the result.

Overall? Yes they probably already made their money back 3x over with the Japanese market and DLC sales.

How weak are the numbers if a freaking GOTY edition of Dead Island charts so high?

Pretty abysmal probably. I wish (Road I think it was) would give us relative numbers to know around the range we're looking at.

Funny how the Japanese and PC market are both up and both were considered dying markets a few years ago while the UK market was supposed to replace Japan as the 2nd biggest.

The more this gen continues, the more we'll see Japanese and PC market rising compared to all the rest ( for two very different reasons: 3DS dominance in the former, generational fatigue / Steam in the latter)

It isn't just the UK. The whole of Europe is likely in a very similar situation with large percentage drops YOY.

US market is seeing the same kind of decline.

Yes, but I am under the impression that the UK market is doing particularly bad, where-as Germany is the least worst out of all Europe.

Either way, the whole situation is very concerning.

UK H1 2012; Software for every format bar 3DS down by double digits (3DS not released for full H1 2011).

And once again I'm gonna tell you that back then the market was much stronger and simply comparing positions on the chart is not comparing like for like. The UK market has collapsed.

It's still a meaningful comparison since the "market has collapsed" argument is true for every other videogame out there, not only FF. Theatrhythmn still had to fight for its spot on the charts against other videogames

Did BKK or anyone else ever post May 2012 platform share figures? I can't find them through Google search and my MCV UK subscription appears to be wonky for the first two weeks of June. (Says password isn't valid, but works for everything else...)

If anyone has them, I'm looking specifically for £ share, not unit share.

‘Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ makes it a fourth week at No1 (-19% ) matching ‘FIFA 12’ now at No 8 (-23% ) for consecutive weeks at the top of our All Formats Chart for 2012 so far. There’s no change to the top three with ‘London 2012: The Official Video Game’ (-19%) holding the No2 spot and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (-23%) still at No3. Koch Media’s ‘Dead Island Game of the Year Edition’ (-14%) climbs a spot to No4 despite a drop in sales. Retailer promotions sees a boost for Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’ (+41%) which climbs from No9 to No5 and pushes ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ (-20%) to No7. ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (+41%) climbs two places to No6. In its third week 2K/Take 2’s ‘Spec Ops: The Line’ (-48%) falls from No4 to No9. Week on week boosts in sales for ‘Mario & Sonic London 2012 Olympic Games’ (+16%) sees it return at No10 after a two week absence. Outside the Top 40 there is a debut at No50 for Namco Bandai’s ‘Inversion’ developed by Saber Interactive for Xbox 360 & Playstation 3. The Sims are also back with new release ‘The Sims 3: Diesel Stuff’ at No55.

Nintendo better hope the XL can breathe new life into the 3DS. Vita looks dead in the UK and 3DS looks like its on Mario life support.

Wow at M&S 3DS re-entering at 26th with just a 16% increase for M&S total. This really shows not only the low numbers, but also the fact that being inside top 40 ( even near top 20 ) or outside it is just a matter of..one-two thousands, or even hundreds.

Farewell Theatrhythm. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy spin-offs on portables never did so well in UK on DS, with the two Crystal Chronicles being very low in specific DS charts too and Revenant Wings being 38th for just one week. Neither FFIV remake did well. Only FFIII did pretty well on DS in UK and the PSP games ( Dissidia, a much more important spin-off fanbase wise, and Crisis Core which can't be considered a spin-off ). At least, this time Square has DLCs too as a supplementary source of money.

Let's see if 3DS XL can give new life to the console, which is really too dependant on Mario titles now ( at least, Lego Batman 2 is not collapsing and it came back in charts ). Vita...it can't wait until Assassin's Creed in October.

Wow, 77.000 units for Inazuma 2 is incredible. Almost too good to be true. Ans that's just France.

Looks like it's much more popular in Europe than I thought.

Mario kart 7 and Super Mario 3D land still showing some decent long legs in some PAL regions after over 6 months since they firstly released, so I gather 3DS is moving some hardware units around Europe and those two games have a good attach-rate.

Kid Icarus could have 200.000 units in Europe, with 33.500 just in France (first two months).

Currently, it should've sold 650.000 - 800.000 units worldwide, hope it breaks the million. :P
