Chivalry: Medieval Warfare or War of the Roses?

Both of these games were recently released on Steam and look pretty much exactly the same to me.

Any word on which is better? Or the key differences between the two? (Other than +$5 for War of the Roses)

Right now, Chivalry by a good margin.

War of the Roses has so many odd gameplay designs, lack of decent game-play modes, iffy combat at times plus it isn't exactly challenging in its combat - Just speed slashing with the occasional blocking.

Chivalry looks excellent, plays well and the gameplay aspect is really tight with the blocking, dodging and some of the game-modes are great fun.

HOWEVER, War of the Roses has a certain rough charm and with a bit of polish, care and attention it could surpass Chivalry as I feel Chivalry can feel a bit limited. I'm guessing that'll take ages though.

That's my take on it.

With Chivalry being $5 cheaper that seems like a pretty done deal, aye.

I have only seen War of the Roses and it definitely looks interesting. I played a good amount of Chivalry in the beta over the last few days and it's really fun to play. I enjoy Last Team Standing personally and when battles end with 2 players dueling it can be incredibly satisfying to win that fight with everyone watching.

I only played Chivalry out of the two. The mechanics are really solid and it's a ton of fun, so that's the one that will be getting my money right now. WotR sounds kind of broken on paper at the moment but I might get that later down the line after a few patches and a heavy discount.

Played a fair amount of both. Chivalry has the far better combat system. War of the Roses is severely lacking in game modes as well.

I was interested in War of the Roses and thought the method of executing directional attacks was interesting and loved the cinematic fatalities and mounted combat. I also love that they included a good deal of weapon and armor customization. Unfortunately, most of the gameplay videos I watched were not that impressive, with forgettable maps and scenery, and sometimes gameplay looked completely boring. A lot of player impressions after release complained about respawn issues and a lack of maps and game modes, so I decided to hold out for a while.

In the mean time, I discovered Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, and I'm really glad that I did because Chivalry is fucking amazing.

Pros
  • Visceral and brutal combat with plenty of blood and gore (decapitate, beat to a pulp, hack off limbs)
  • Simple and easy to learn, yet intricate combat mechanics - kicks, shield bashes, feints, timed blocking and parrying, dodging, combos, special abilities, endurance management
  • Fantastic sound design (amazing battle cries, death screams, weapon effects, environmental sounds, etc.)
  • First person and third person view - third person is actually viable (a well done over the shoulder view like Gears of War)
  • Nice variety of beautifully designed and highly detailed maps
  • Wide variety of game modes - Team Objectives, Last Team Standing, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Free for All, etc.
  • Fun dynamic objectives (kill/protect the king, elimination, defend/siege castles, defend/protect villages and villagers, etc.)
  • Team based game modes with no respawns
  • Siege weapons
  • Class based gameplay
  • Multiple weapons per class (Ex: Knight can use sword/shield, 1H sword, 2H sword, mace, throwing axes)
  • Friendly fire - No running into combat swinging wildly around like a madman
  • Excellent physics, accurate hit detection, good netcode, and smooth gameplay

Cons
  • Tutorial could use some polish (definitely needs talking animations)
  • Stab and overhand/backhand attacks are awkward with the default mapping (mouse wheel)
  • Friends list in the server browser is delayed (right click on friend in Steam is much faster for joining friends' games)
  • Needs more player customization, weapons, and unlocks
  • No Steam achievements (being worked on according to official forums)
  • No leaderboards or stat tracking (scoreboard is sufficient for now)
  • Needs more camera options in spectator mode
  • Lack of customization or indicators makes it difficult to identify friends on your team
  • Man at Arms class may need balancing - felt weak to me and very few people were playing this class
  • Projectile camera seems pointless
  • No mounts or mounted combat - not sure it would even work in this game and might even ruin the current balance

By the way, I thought this game might have some of those wonky feeling aspects that you might expect from a first person melee game, but it doesn't. It feels and controls GREAT. This is definitely one of the most fun multiplayer games I have played in recent years.

Tips:

Mouse sensitivity is low by default (around 30). Crank it up to about 75-100.

Holding SHIFT to sprint will cramp your hand quickly due to the amount of running around the larger maps in the objective based games. Go to your key configuration and enable the sprint toggle. SO MUCH BETTER. I wish they had a similar option for the crouch command.

Do the tutorial! A lot of the advanced tactics like shield bashing, kicking, feints, combos, dodging, etc. will definitely give you an edge in combat. If I didn't do the tutorial I would probably have never learned about each classes special ability and would have just ended up running around mashing the mouse button and swinging my sword around like a maniac (although I still do this sometimes).

After spending a lot of time with the default control layout, I think rebinding the stab and overhand/backhand attacks may improve the feel of the combat. I hated frantically rolling the mouse wheel up to try and get a stab combo to follow my opening slash or rolling it down to try and backhand as I circled around an opponent. A single key stroke is much more reliable and efficient.

I've noticed people doing a really fast dodge/sidestep move when fighting them. How are they pulling this off?

It also seems like if you time a jump and overhead attack, you get a big damage bonus if it connects.

Believe it's button / key double-tapping.

It's a light armored class ability, I believe. Double tap the direction you want to dodge.

Try the tutorial when you get a chance.

Chivalry has a no-respawn mode? It's the default winner in that case.

Total Biscuit just put up an awesome comparison video in the style of the Deadliest Warrior of the two. Does a really good job covering the pros and cons of each game.

The combat in Chivalry just looks so awesome that I can't help but want that one.

War of the Roses looks awesome too though, why did two awesome games like this come out at the same time???

Great video by TB though, good watch.

If you go for Chivalry you should get it from here. $25 Steam key.

Developer gets more money, you(ropeans) pay less money. Everyone except Valve wins.

Ya good point, I always try to buy direct from the developer, especially if they give out a steam key anyways.

Valve is making money hand over fist either way, but the developer could really benefit from the extra money.

Of course that looks like Humble Bundle Store sells that key so they probably take a cut.

How do you make sprint a toggle instead of a hold? I looked all through the keybindings and options and didn't see how to do it...

Go into the keybind menu and off to the upper right there is a checkbox to enable this. It's kind of out of the way so you may not spot it at first glance.
