Starbucks to buy Teavana in another step beyond coffee

(Reuters) - Starbucks Corp (SBUX) said on Wednesday it plans to acquire tea store operator Teavana Holdings Inc (TEA) for $620 million in cash, furthering its push beyond its flagship coffee business.

Starbucks, the world's largest coffee shop operator, said it will pay $15.50 per share in cash for Teavana, a 54 percent premium to the company's closing price on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

Shares of Atlanta-based Teavana jumped to $15.43 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Starbucks has been expanding beyond its core products with its acquisitions of juice company Evolution Fresh and sandwich maker La Boulange Bakery.

Janney Capital Markets analyst Mark Kalinowski said Starbucks could aim for synergies, including selling Teavana's teas in its coffee shops and possibly through other outlets.
News of a deal was first reported by the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

Starbucks shares fell 2 percent to $49.30 on the Nasdaq.

Starbucks Blog: http://blogs.starbucks.com/blogs/customer/archive/2012/11/14/our-commitment-to-tea.aspx

Since our very earliest days as Starbucks Coffee, Tea and Spices, Starbucks has been heavily invested in the tea business. Back in those days, we scooped 27 different varieties of tea for our customers in the original Pike Place Market store – and after acquiring Tazo back in 1999, our commitment and passion for tea only increased further as that brand became an established part of our portfolio in both our stores and in grocery channels.

Today I am delighted to share with you the exciting news that on the back of a record financial performance for Starbucks in our fourth quarter and fiscal 2012, Starbucks has entered into an agreement to acquire Teavana. This transaction should signal that we have moved our plan to fundamentally transform the consumer tea experience in both North American and international markets into high gear.

Over the past 15 years, Teavana has built world-class capabilities in tea authority, global sourcing, merchandising and best-in-class retail store unit economics around its single-origin estate teas. Teavana’s considerable tea expertise, coupled with the romance and theater of the retail experience that is at the very heart of Starbucks heritage, will create a differentiated customer experience.

Our enthusiasm for this news is matched by a commitment to continue growing Tazo – an already thriving $1.4 billion brand for Starbucks. Teavana complements Tazo and, in fact, unleashes Tazo to compete aggressively as our premium entry point for consumers seeking an innovative and differentiated tea experience while providing us with flexibility to pursue a two-tiered global tea marketing strategy.

We are excited about what’s ahead and welcome your continued thoughts and feedback as we redefine the tea experience for customers around the globe.

Onward,

Howard Schultz

Crazy. Hopefully this leads to much needed improvements over at Teavana.

Good. Teavana is lousy, and Starbucks can only improve them. Worst case scenario, they stay lousy. It's like the hot beverage equivalent of Disney buying Star Wars! Except way less exciting.

I've sample their teas a few time and found them rather tasty. Why the Teavana hate?

Hope they (Starbucks) don't screw up the iced black tea. I actually like the Tazo blend they use currently.

Thought this was Tejava for a second and was worried/excited since their tea is delicious.

Looks like you are drinking a 40 which gets awesome looks at work.

Yeah, this can only be a good thing. Tazo isn't cheap but I think it's fairly good. There have been rumors of Starbucks branching out into tea stores, and I guess this is what became of that.

It's good when you compare them to like the boxes of crappy tea you get at a supermarket, but against other loose tea shops, it's pretty mediocre.

Before I go into it, let me preface this by saying if you enjoy what you drink there, more power to you. I'm not going to attempt in any way to argue against your preference and tastes.

The problems I have with Teavana are as follows:

1) Useless filler. Teavana has switched largely to high-margin, filler-filled tea blends. Fruit pieces and corn flowers look really nice, but they typically don't add anything to the tea aside from weight. This would be fine if it were priced accordingly but...

2) Their stuff is generally too expensive. The price you pay for the quality you get is just too high.

3) The staff at Teavana are trained to lie and deceive you. Every time I've gone in there, I've either personally been fed bullshit or have overheard an over-eager clerk peddling a different type of bullshit to another customer. Fine, don't listen to it. Go to the counter and buy some tea. Ask for an ounce. They are actually trained to over scoop, in an attempt to trick you into buying more tea. I've never had a sales associate correct their mistake.

4) While the above is bad, the company also treats its staff pretty poorly. There are a number of horror stories floating around the internet, about high-pressure sales and poor treatment.

Good. The only time I went in to Teavana was to try out their English Breakfast, and I left the store in a rage after the sales guy tried to up-sell me from $20 worth of English Breakfast to like $200+ of stuff. I can understand trying to upsell me once, that's your job, but when you push and push and push at me like 5 times when I clearly only want the thing I came in for, you and your company can die in a fire. Hopefully Starbucks can improve their service.

The English Breakfast tea was good, but I still prefer PG Tips, which are crazy cheap on Amazon (like 6 cents a bag cheap) compared to my local supermarket.
