Steam for Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) now available

Anyone know if it works on ElementaryOS? Was going to try it over the weekend, but couldn't get Elementary to boot from my USB drive.

I have no doubt it will work just fine in Mint. I don't think there's any reason for you to install Ubuntu.
I will be playing on Mint for sure but I did kinda want to check out Ubuntu since I haven't touched it in years. I suppose I could just skin Unity but I LOVE Cinnamon too much!

Been using the beta for a while, works pretty much as you'd expect. Can sometimes be a little wonky with workspaces.
Ew, why Ubuntu? Sabayon has been better for years now
Valve explained this a few months ago as they chose to start with just one distribution and for a variety of reasons (including their own personal use, popularity, Canonical's assistance, etc.) picked Ubuntu as the start point.

It works on others, Ubuntu's just the only one they're officially supporting.

Now i'm going to have to install Ubuntu alongside Mint, which is alongside Win7. Triple boot FTW!

Mint is basically just Ubuntu with Cinnamon installed out of the box and no canonical apps.

(it works fantastic in Linux Mint)

There's pretty much a guide for every major distro for getting the steam beta working. Valve has been working somewhat closely with Canonical to fix any issues and improve performance. Doing that at this stage with 20 different distros would be silly.

It's telling me to use an enrolled account even though I removed the old client and installed the new one...grrrr lol

Edit: Fixed but how come TF2 is the only game showing?

Do you own any other Linux compatible games? Those are the only ones that are going to show (note L4D2 doesn't seem to be out yet)

I wonder if I can run any indie games on my netbook running lubuntu. I'll have to give this a try later.
Some of the games I've tried on my laptop, like FTL, run almost flawlessly while they're slow or choppy in Windows.

How does the Steam Linux catalogue look like? Enough good games there?

Decent amount. I automatically got about 20ish that I already owned on Windows. Mostly stuff that was in Humble Bundles. TF2, Killing Floor, Red Orchestra, FTL, SpaceChem, etc. are on there. A couple more popped up this week.

Hmm, this is incentive to get my linux partition up and running, but I was going to wait until after christmas for this! Might try out Linux Mint for this.

39 games only?

It's like the service is in beta or something. Bastards.

For those suggesting Linux Mint, I wholeheartedly agree. Ubuntu was good, then it was really good, then it went Windows 8 before windows 8 existed and jacked shit up right.

Mint fixes that and pre-installs most video codecs and flash which makes it a VERY easy distro to just install and use with minimal fiddeling. Though you will need to install the latest AMD and/or nvidia drivers. Plenty of guides to do that though.

And like 36 of there aren't worth playing :/ I was interested in trying the beta, but whats the point with no game library? Meh, I'll wait this one out.
Hmm....

Trine 2
SS3
SPAZ
Frozen Synapse
SpaceChem
World of Goo
Multiwinia
Team Fortress 2
Amnesia.....

FTL is in the library, but I don't think there is actually a linux binary for it.

You mean steam doesn't have the linux version of FTL? If so that wouldn't make too much sense... I have it, just not via steam and the linux client works great.

I think there are actually quite a few Linux games that are on Steam, but are missing linux versions on Steam.

It's probably just a matter of time, though.

Ahh, you're right. The game shows up in the library, but doesn't run from Steam. I just assumed it would same as the one I have installed outside of Steam.

So that's kinda weird, wonder which of these other games are like that.

One thing I'll be interested in is how adding non-steam games will work for Linux. I'm not overly fluent in Linux but it'd be nice to see how that all ties together, and actually being able to run games like Minecraft from a shortcut in Steam.

You browse to the file and it's added...

Can you play Left 4 Dead 2 yet? I prefer the DRM-free versions of regular Linux games, my interest in Steam is specifically for the Valve games.
