Among the Sleep is a first person horror adventure, in which you play a two year old child.

What happens when you mix a child's perspective and imagination, with the surreal nature of dreams?
Quite a lot, I guess, but we think one of those things is an interesting premise for a horror adventure.

The game is heavily based on atmosphere and exploration, and using the two year old child’s perspective.
For example you’ll be able to see your own body at all times, and you will have to interact with the environment to find places to hide from dangers.

There might be threats hiding in every shadow, but there’s no traditional combat.
Instead, players will actively have to find places to hide, and avoid confrontation to survive.
For example in cupboards and under furniture.

We’re aiming to include some puzzle and adventure elements as well, but our main focus lies on exploration, atmosphere and horror.

Krillbite Studio, the independent developer behind Among the Sleep, came to be during our studies of interactive digital art about two years ago.
As a creative collective of friends, we started our current project Among the Sleep as our thesis project, and we decided to continue working on it after graduating.

Been a vocal supporter of this for a long time. Played the alpha build last night and I'm really, really hoping to see the full thing become a reality. It's got scads of promise and I get the sense they really know what they're doing.

Oh, cool! Can you talk more about what you played or are you under NDA?

Is it tacky yet to ask for Oculus Rift support? Because the horror FPS genre is definitely the one I want to use VR for the most...

Looks really neat, I remember seeing a video about this some time ago and thinking that there were so many great things that could come from the concept. And as a huge horror fan, I'm always willing to try something new against the current tired formulas.

I'm fine to say anything, really. The build wasn't huge, just the introductory sections.

Game has you waking up and the cot being upturned, after your teddy bear's dragged off by an invisible thing. You stumble out the room, move chairs to reach door handles, and hear someone crying for help in a laundry machine. You unplug it, open it up, and there's a teddy bear inside, who tells you to find your mother.

Most of the rest of the build is walking through the house, with some spooky sounds and things going on. You can use the teddy to climb through small holes and open doors, and I'm assuming he'll be a big part of the puzzle solving.

Also crawled through a big brass gramophone-style tube and ended up in a world of floating playground islands with a fairytale house. Demo ended around there.

Reminds me of Amnesia in a few ways, with lots of walking and hearing scary things, and opening doors. The fairytale world thing looks like it'll be a big part of it, too.

Sounds great, won't even watch the Kickstarter video to play it without knowing too much.

I really hope people back this. I just love how people complain about how survival horror is dead but are completely oblivious to games like this.

Is it common to add base tiers (just the game) at a slightly higher price when the lowest tier with the game is limited, like in this case?

Like will they add a $20 tier once the 1000 $15 tiers are all taken?

Generally Early Bird means you get a more expensive tier at a lower price for the first 1000 or so people.

Here they are using Early Bird as, you get access to an appealing tier on its own for the first 1000 people.

I would say that they should have a $20 tier for people that just want the game, otherwise you are forced to pay at least 66% more to get the game and a soundtrack you might not want. Though the soundtrack is pretty nothing anyway, the game already has a soundtrack in it, you're just paying to have the files in a known place and as mp3/flacs or whatever.

Pledged $15, will keep the pledge up if rift support is confirmed, as this looks like a fantastic experience in conjunction with it.

Looks great. Really liked their KS video. You can tell these are very creative people.

Also, I've sent them this Kickstarter PM:

Me said:
Your game. It screams for Oculus Rift support. DO IT!

And they've almost immediately replied:

We definitely agree Hugo!

We looking into it, and will probably be releasing some more information on this very soon :)

Thanks!

I'd say OR support is looking good. This will be amazing.

Someone PM Wario. This KS needs a lot of money.

This looks absolutely fantastic. I'm a big fan of the first person viewpoint and feel it could be used in many great ways, the whole premise is incredibly appealing. Shall definitely be contributing when I get paid :)

It looks interesting but there are way too many first person horror games coming out this year.

Rountine, Amnesia: AMFP, Daylight, Outlast, Asylum, The Intruder and a dozen Slender Man inspired games.

We can always use more my friend. Scaring the shit out of yourself is a timeless activity since ancient Egypts.

What will you say when we have a year when there are none?

You don't have to buy them all.

Call me if you need something else.

You play as a two year old child. There you go, no more games to compare it to.

That is a unique element. It also shares a lot gameplay elements with upcoming games of the genre. This project looks great, but I rather wait for a few of these types of games to release and see which shine brightest.

The premise is interesting, but the Pixar art style doesn't do much for me. I might back it in one of the lower tiers though.

Now the earlybird has gone a new $20 tier has appeared which gets you the game and a wallpaper.

Also over $40,000 in a day or so, good stuff! Got the feeling it will be a slow crawl to get to $200,000 though.

Update #1: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/krillbite/among-the-sleep/posts/458662

Thank you so much for joining us during the first 24 hours of this exciting ride. The Early Bird tier were all gone in the first hours, and we’re approaching 1/4 funded already! It’s been an incredibly inspiring 24 hours, and we’re preparing tons of exciting news for you in the coming days. Also, thanks so much to Annleis Film for helping out / making the Kickstarter movie.

For everyone who's interested in seeing Among the Sleep on Steam, there's now a Greenlight page » up and running!

Oculus Rift support!!!???
We’ve got tons off request regarding Oculus Rift support - and we definitely agree that this would be awesome! We have even been experimenting with it, and can confirm it’s awesomeness. We want to add Oculus as our first stretch goal, so at the moment it’s a bit dependent on the Kickstarters success - we'll see!

Reddit AMA:
For those of you interested in discussing anything with us, we’re doing an AMA (ask us anything) over at Reddit.com/r/IAmA tomorrow from noon PDT / 3pm EDT / 9pm CEST, regarding Among the Sleep, the Kickstarter, and anything else! Hope to see you there!

And again, again, and again.. thanks so much to all of you!- The Krillbite Team

I have a feeling the Oculus Rift "community" is on the verge of becoming a little bitter about those support promises as a stretch goal. Most of us are at least hobbyist devs with access to the SDK and fully aware that:

A) Adding support is pretty trivial, especially when the engine you use already supports it natively, and:

B) It shouldn't be something you do as an afterthought anyway, if you don't wanna run into issues with UI, scale and whatnot. The sooner you implement it, the better.

I get that they need money and see this as a good opportunity to get more of it but it's bound to backfire at some point.

I played this game at GDC. They had a nice 10 minute demo running. It's really promising.
For those who are curious, felt like a mixture of Bioshock and Eternal Darkness.

Was there not a short demo of this where you wonder from your crib to the living room/kitchen and there's a unseen menacing thing roaming about, released earlier in the year/last year?

I do like what I've seen from them, and if that demo/slice (that I'm totally not making up) is any indication, I'll be all over it.

It'll probably recieve a good boost when the alpha becomes available to the public and youtubers start posting their videos.
