Epic: Microsoft and Sony are fully embracing free2play and IAP for next-gen

For those who don't know, IAPs are basically the name for microtransactions on mobile devices.

Joystiq said:
Sony and Microsoft are telling developers they're "going heavily" on free-to-play and in-app purchasing models with their next-gen consoles, according to Epic Games VP Mark Rein. Speaking in a roundtable discussion at the UK's Game Horizon conference, Rein said both companies will take on the kinds of financial models seen on mobile devices.

"The next-gen consoles are going to be fully embracing the free-to-play and these IAP-type business models," Rein told the audience, "So in case you don't know that I'm putting that out there. Sony and Microsoft are both going heavily in that area."

Roundtable chair Matt Martin of GamesIndustry International said that's what both platform holders are saying, but that "we still need to see some kind of evidence."

Rein replied, "Well, I'm telling you. I'm telling you what they're telling developers."

In app purchases are ok as long as I DO NOT need them to win.

I've yet to pay for single game on my iPhone or anything else that requires purchases to advance gameplay.

Well Microsoft are trying to get League of Legends aren't they?

I'd imagine Sony are trying to get other games as well.

Looking more likely to be the dominant model on consoles, yeah. In the beginning, I wonder if we'll see more standard model console games getting conversions, planned or not, to F2P once the expensive ones have cooled down on sales or not met expectations. I expect that to be the way, similar to box office-to-video path for film.

Gonna see how this goes, honestly. Personally, majority of my friends are console owners and would jump on something free if we could play it together.

It much more difficult to get them to game co-op on PC.

I hope they don't plan on selling us $60 or $70 games and then keep nickel and dimeing us with IAP after that for content that is already on the disks. I won't play those games.

Could be good if done right. There are plenty of titles that could benefit from this. I know DCUO has become quite successful since switching to this model. Games with heavy online components can use this. Just make the game worth my time before you ask me for $5 for some in-game socks

Makes sense as they are turning into legitimately viable methods of gaming. It would be silly of them to ignore market trends like this and stay behind the times.

Disappointing if it's going to model exactly what mobile has been doing. F2P + IAP = pay to win

No thanks, I like spending my money up front without having to worry about what I'll be spending throughout the game.

I'll be avoiding F2P and microtransactions.

I don't mind IAP. They work with some games, but limiting your playtime is not what I want. Which is very common like with Puzzles & Dragons. You had a certain amount of stamina to play and once that ran out, you either just waited (a while) or you 'bought' stones that you could use.

My problem with IAP is when it cuts playtime, I don't mind buying a sword that is better, an extra car pack, or something like that, if I enjoy the game I'll support it. But my PLAYTIME is not something I want to pay incrementally for. I did that with MMO's and I'm over that.

Give me something tangible that I'd be purchasing and I consider a value, and I'll buy it. Making me pay just to play? That is going against what F2P even means.

The biggest problem is finding a good balance. I think Guild Wars does a great job for a non-subscription model (not F2P - you still buy the game) and I wouldn't mind that type of IAP. But I can only imagine 'time' is going to be the biggest selling point and that's what they'll sell.

I wonder what will be different then... because there are F2P games with In-Game Purchases already available like Happy Wars and Crash Course that just came out.

What is standing in the way of that being more commonplace right now?

Team Fortress 2 is the only well done free2play model I have seen. The entire game is completely free but if you want specific hats which serve no game-play purpose then it costs some money. But, I am afraid that all we are going to see is pay2win game showing up, very similar to what mobile app stores and Facebook is filled with.

There are plenty of free games that are better than iOS games. I'm playing Path of Exile and I'm having as much, if not more, fun playing that than I did playign Diablo 3. In fact, I don't even know what you can pay for in Path of Exile. I've never even seen the microtransaction menu and I have like 20 hours played.

Good.

I REALLY want to see how it works on big budget AAA games.

Could be a disaster (both financially and creatively), who knows. But I don't have interest in any of the games that currently employ such business models.

Planetside 2 had a big budget, the game itself was great for the most part but I don't know how it did financially.

The direct way to Chapter 11.

Only ten percent of the F2P-Gamer are actually spending money, no problem if you have millions of player but on PS4 and Xbox 720 the audience is much smaller than on PC. Almost everybody has a PC that's fast enough for F2P-games, but how many people will have a PS4 in 2014? 7 million? And how many of them connect their console to the internet? 5 million? And how many of them love F2P-games? One million? And how many of them spend money? 100.000?

I last read an article in that someone from Bigpoint said that the typicle F2P-gamer is female, in the late 30s and has two children. Will these people buy a PS4? I don't think so.

Heh

Really? Optional free games is the reason why won't get a console?

It's the hyperbole people like to push to fit their agenda that every company is anti-consumer scum and the gaming industry is going to shit. They hear news like this and assume it means every game on the new systems will be f2p with hundreds of dollar of micro transactions. It's fear mongering.
