Doug TenNapel, creator of Earthworm Jim™ (Interplay) and The Neverhood™ (Electronic Arts) has partnered with Pencil Test Studios, to create what some have called The Neverhood's "spiritual successor" -- a clay and puppet animated adventure game called ARMIKROG.

The founders of Pencil Test Studios, Mike Dietz and Ed Schofield (also from Earthworm Jim and The Neverhood), have assembled much of the original Neverhood development team to create a brand new game that blurs the lines between art and technology, using stop-motion animation and sculpture to bring this project to life.

The Game

Armikrog is a point and click adventure game that features all of the characteristics of TenNapel's unmistakable style:

Quirky and lovable characters
Unique worlds
A compelling story
Mind-bending puzzles
Great animation
Tons of clay!

The Story

Without giving too much away, Armikrog follows the adventures of a space explorer named Tommynaut and his blind alien, talking dog named Beak-Beak. They crash land on a weird planet and end up locked in a mysterious fortress called Armikrog. Then...the adventure begins!

The Music

Terry S. Taylor -- the award winning composer of The Neverhood soundtrack, will be composing and performing an entirely new original soundtrack for the game. Hooray!!!

While our funding goal is considerably less than The Neverhood cost to produce in 1997, it is still our biggest hurdle. But in light of what it will cost to create, the real question is this: Would you support and play this game for $25?

Man, how much did The Neverhood cost to make back in 1997?

That looks pretty incredible. I'm not a fan of stop motion or their previous games to be honest, but I still feel like backing this.

900,000 seems kind of ambitious since I can't see them getting that much - though I could see it actually costing that much or more. The effort, precision, and sheer dedication that goes into creating a stop motion/claymation title is impressive and insane.

The Neverhood was originally the game to get me into point and click adventures as well, and that was after I had played skullmonkeys. I will be backing the title...hopefully at the $90 level once I find out if I'll have the funds available to do so :>

Claymation is brutally expensive. Both in terms of materials (The Neverhood used two tonnes of clay, IIRC) and effort spent painstakingly creating the shots.

As much as i admire their talent and desire to use claymation... they should have gone with Polygons....

Has there been a 3D engine game trying to replicate claymation... i don't think that the look would be hard to achieve... at the same time, I know nothing.

I really hope this one succeeds. I know it's a long shot, but man!

Look at the voice talent!

Man you weren't kidding.

Michael J Nelson (mst3k)
Veronica Belmont (rev3)
Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite)
Rob Paulsen (every great cartoon ever)
Scott Kurtz (PvP webcomic, okay that's a head scratcher)

This looks amazing I'll put in $25 at the end of the week when I'm paid. EWJ was one of my favourite games as a kid and I love the art style these guys employ.

Ugh. I disliked Neverhood's ugly artstyle and Tim Burton-style character designs. Wish they had went with something else.

:/
Sorry to say, man, but there's nothing Tim Burton about the Neverhood look aside from everything looking zany.

The animation showcased so far is much more impressive than anything The Neverhood had, so I have high hopes that the final product can surpass its predecessor. This project deserves everyone's attention: it's a great idea that absolutely will not compromise because production constraints look too rough. And the voice cast!

It will be difficult to fund a project as big as this, though. TenNapek has a vocal fan base, but that alone doesn't make any guarantee.

I fucking love The Neverhood. It was one of the first games i played on the pc way back in the day besides of course Doom, commander keen, etc... but i am worried that they will not be able to raise 900K on kickstarter :( . I will put my money where my mouth is though and back my first kickstarter project .

Looks like the money ticker's rising pretty fast, actually. You'd be surprised what can happen in just a week's time for a popular project on KS.

Once again: Terry S. Taylor makes some hilarious roots and country stuff.
