Hardcore LTTP: Demon Souls european extreme edition

demons-souls_wallpapers_19999_1680x1050.jpg
What fascinates me the most about demon souls is the experience people had when it was just released. That the game was so insane with hidden details on how to continue that it seemed 90% of the people who bought it gave up, quit and deemed it a horrible game. Only for people who have stuck to it despite the absurd difficulty. Listening to podcasts about the two sided opinions of it being terrible to brilliant. I gotta say I want to be part of that.

So this is a topic hopefully for newcomers and EU PS+ users who never played or read the guides/tips to playing the game. Essentially a topic with sadist people who hate to admit they need help. Kinda like Metal Gear's european extreme mode.

Join me on this adventure. Use spoiler tags if you intend to to help someone, if you've played the game before and feel free to curse and complain to the absurdity that is playing demon souls for the first time. We can all help each other trying to figure things out and have fun with the game that way. What I hope to recreate is essentially getting the game day 1.

The game comes out today on EU PS+.

My PSN ID is: GungamStyle

I remember finished this game in 2011. My friend imported the Asian version and could never get passed the first world. So he offered me. I took my time but I finally did it. Most hard game I've finished (considering I don't play many hard games or games on hard).

Now, if only I could beat Dark Souls, but nope, can't finish, I'm so bad at that game, which is strange because I did finished Demon's Souls!

Might go for a bit more of Demon's Souls in case there's more activity, never played much the online part of it at the because I had the Asian Version and was playing in Europe.

I'll be joining. Never played Demon's or Dark Souls and might as well try it out now that it is a PS+ freebie.

I'm not afraid of difficulty as much as the games ability to hold my intrest.

I've purchased the game on sale recently and have played it a bit. Seems to me like it's way harder than Dark Souls and I'm getting my ass kicked left and right. Will be trying again. :)

Never played this and, like you, I want to at least give it a try first without looking at any guides/FAQ to ease the pain. I might come to regret that later :)

I bought this from PSN like 3 months ago... only have finished 6 or so bosses, awesome game (100%'d Dark Souls so it is a bit easier for me)

Bought it right before Dark Souls came out, got all the trophies a while later.
But now, thanks to the PS+ version, I'm looking forward to downloading it (just for the sake of it) and playing around with a new character in a freshly populated world.

I can't exactly say why, but I can't wait to play this game! Plus update is taking long...

Because we're europeans are tough mofos who like to face a challenge. Just look at the games we make, bare bones, straight to business gameplay, with hard difficulty. :p

Eastern European Difficulty, maybe :P

Because it was a harder difficulty mode that originated from the European version of the game. Pretty straight forward, no?

Well it was an Australian version I played, which makes sense if you think about PAL regions, but doesn't make much sense to a child playing a PS2 game with a difficulty named after a continent. It's not like I knew other regional versions of the game didn't have it. In fact, I didn't know until you just told me now.

I think I'm halfway through Demon's Souls atm. It really hasn't impressed me like Dark Souls did (and still does). Of course, Demon's was released first, so it's not entirely fair to compare them.

My main gripes are that some of the bosses are too simple and mindflayers are just annoyingly annoying, especially on the stairs. I'm glad FROM decided to not include them in DarkS.

Completed this twice already but very much looking forward to downloading it tonight for the novelty of playing the EU version with other people and hopefully improved loading times.

Interesting. Dark Souls didn't impress me as much as Demon's Souls, but I played DeS first. It's probably the introduction to that style of game that hits you really hard and makes a lasting impression.

That and the semi open-world nature of Dark Souls is more impressive and overwhelming than the Nexus + levels structure of Demon's, where you can go back to that safe place whenever you're exhausted by what the game throws at you. Plus from both a level design and boss design, Dark is much more ambitious in terms of scale and variety. It's also more uneven than Demon's, but that's another story.

Dark Souls is the better game, Demon Souls the better experience.

Dat flawless dedicated server connection. Dark Souls p2p-group crap can die in hell and never come back.

Yeah, it's that unevenness that gets to me on subsequent playthroughs. Lost Izalith bothers me a little every time I get to it, as does Anor Londo. I haven't played DeS in a while, though, so I wonder how it'll hold up.

Man does it ever need a PC release.

I tried to imagine what a european extreme difficulty would be for Demons Souls, and all I could come up with is that any time an enemy went into the aggro state, he would instantly teleport into a backstab on you.

I got it for ÂŁ8 last month from PSN (I don't have PS+) and finished it just 2 nights ago. I have to say I absolutely loved it :D

Downloading from PSN now. Pretty excited for my first playthrough. Just hope I'll be able to find enough time to stick with it. I'm guessing progress is slow....

I was not a fan of the world tendency system in Demon's Souls. I understand it's there to increase replayability but it's impossible to manipulate when you are online and when you're offline you miss out on all the stuff that comes with that.

I also prefer the art style of Dark Souls to Demon Souls by a lot. In fact I think Demon is kind of ugly looking at it now.

I don't know I like Demon Souls I just think Dark Souls is a massive improvement in just about everyway. Story and world design are just a step above.

I do have to say though that the Tower of Latria is one of my favorite areas in the whole series. Atmosphere is just top notch.

Made a character. Royalty Class.

Named him king.

Here we go! EDIT:

Muahahaha. I lost an hour of progress already. But I feel the game is fantastic. Super interesting world and the gameplay is top notch.

Played an hour or two. Hunter Class.
When you
die after one hit
at the Tutorials
Vanguard bossfight scared the shit out of me
But your suposed to die there. The basterds.
Awesome.

I quite like it so far. Lot's of hidden treasure and a world you want to explore. The atmosphere is quite sad. Such a beautifull place, destroyed by man's greed.
Maybe it's because i've played Dark Sous before, up untill the gargoyles, but i'm not having a hard time. I do have a really fun one, though. :)
Didn't like Dark so much as a lot of GAFers did. Not because of it's gameplay, that's great, but it's story, art and general feel killed it for me. I'm not having that in DS. Atleast, not yet.

Anyhow, i'm LTTP and loving it. :)

this will be my first time playing demons souls but ive finished dark souls about ~10+. are there major differences in regard to the basic gameplay mechanics etc.?

Pretty much the same really, but with some exceptions.

- No sprint jump.
- Parry timing is slightly different.
- Only two weight states -- fat roll and fast roll, nothing in between like in Dark Souls.
- DeS has weight burden for your inventory as well, so you have to store some of your items. In Dark Souls you could carry as much as you wanted.
- No lightning/chaos upgrades, all materials scale with one or more of the character parameters.
- No pyromancy.
- Intelligence and Magic are two separate parameters.
- No covenants.

That's all I can think of.

He's totally lying. Sprint jump is in there just only available in certain spots (programmed to get over holes). Go to world 3-1 and try it!

Just lost 4000 soul due to some boogy 'killin dragons. :(
Ah well, atleast I got
the Fire Ring and Shield that where lying there

But eh, how do you level up? :P

Ah Demon's Souls. Always reminds me of a fantasy themed MegaMan what with taking each area and subsequently boss in a specific order. I forgot this was on EU Plus today. Should be lots of fresh meat around, mwhahaha.

Holy snap, I've never thought about it that way.

In Demon's Souls you need to talk to the girl in the nexus with the staff in order to level up. She says something about touching the demon inside her.

Generally she'll be close to you right when you pop in.

Also I looked up good PVE builds when I started both games but I know some people think it's a bad thing to do that. But it makes things a little easier and it makes it so you don't get stuck with wasted points when things start to get really hard. For me anyway the souls series reminds me a lot of MMOs without the terrible aspects and messing with builds and weapon combinations is a major draw.

Also neither game is really that hard or at least not nearly as hard as people make them out to be. Just keep your shield up and pay attention.

Demon's souls doesn't have absurd difficulty to be honest.Just be methodical in your approach and don't mash.Pick up all the healing items you can and don't fight anything that can kill you in one hit.

Its an absolutely thrilling and fascinating experience. Also , i think the story telling and Voice acting are some of the best the generation has to offer.

watch out for giant depraved ones. These guys KICK ASS.
