Epic announces Oculus Rift support for Unreal Engine 4

Epic Games has officially announced support for the Oculus Rift on the Unreal Engine 4. In a release today, the company announced the members of its UE4 Integrated Partners Program, a group of companies whose technology will be tightly integrated with the latest engine. Among Autodesk, Intel, Nvidia, and other big names, you'll find Oculus VR, whose virtual reality headset has captured the imagination of many gamers and developers. As Engadget points out, Epic has said before that it was working on support for the Oculus Rift. But this announcement makes it clear that Epic will be working with Oculus to make Unreal Engine 4 work as smoothly as possible on the Rift, and that there will be an ongoing relationship between the two.

Epic isn't the only big name to express interest in supporting the Rift. EA's Frank Vitz is exploring the possibility of integrating Rift support into the new Frostbite Engine, and Valve has worked on porting several of its games for the headset. John Carmack of Id Software was also an early supporter of the project. Tailoring engines for the Rift and supporting existing games is just part of the problem Oculus faces, however. The immersion and head-tracking mechanisms of the Rift often work poorly with fast-paced shooters or other games that require deft control, meaning that developers will need to think not just about how to get games running, but what kind of experiences actually work in virtual reality.

Good good.
I really want to see Sony or Microsoft (rather Sony!) announce something at E3. When you think about it, there is no real risk there. it will be an add on, games can be patched... Sony should just do it for the sake of not letting a potential future proof movie viewer going away without them being on board. Just announce something, there are only benefits to it really.

I think it's at the stage where if the Oculus guys come out onto the stage at one of the conferences, it would be megaton.

I find it interesting that the majority of Gaf is so against FPS's

And yet seems so excited about the Rift.

So what does this mean exactly? Is it that whatever devs need to do to get OR working with their games will already be a part of the UDK? If so, that's pretty awesome.

GAF is not a hivemind, and FPS are not the only thing you can use a Rift for. E.g. many people I know who are into simulations are hyped for it.

Exciting.

Even though I have a dev kit, the consumer model is really going to shake things up. It should be pretty damn incredible once more people are able to give this thing a try.

Wow, this is actually going to get good support it seems. Not looking forward to making sure my PC can get 60fps in Unreal 4 games, while in stereoscopic 3D though.

Not really. Ignoring the fact that the Rift can be used for first person ANYTHING and not just shootbang, the group that dislikes shooters and the group that's excited for the Oculus don't necessarily overlap. (The first of which is definitely not a majority, by the way. I doubt they're even a plurality.)

They have to support games first.

It's why I said majority. Fine, but if it's successful, guess what kind of big budget titles will get pushed even more? Not adventure or simulation games, which is what the majority of the consoles retail/budget releases will be since people want the consoles to have Rift support.

You haven't spent any time whatsoever brainstorming what it could be used for I assume.

Outside of FPS games, it would be incredible for games like skyrim, any driving or flight games, mech games, and abstract games could be absolutely mind blowing in their own right. Stuff like mirrors edge would be a great experience. Even third person games could potentially be amazing, or stuff like Starcraft.

Super pumped to see what will be shown at e3

It's never going to be successful on the kind of level that could cause it to shape what kind of games people develop, so don't worry.

I kinda wish this upcoming generation of consoles had more to do with virtual reality but then again, the current technology so far hasn't been convincing enough. Oculus Rift is the right direction though, I suppose.

Is there any chance that Nintendo supports it?

They have to support games first.

Nintendo said they would, but their games would only feature Wario, have red graphics, but it would come with a tripod.

Just kidding, but I thought something like this would have been the nex gen Wii; didn't happen though.

With regard to the first person discussion, a future (1080p) model of the Oculus could work a general-purpose 3D head mounted display, no? I understand that it would mean sacrificing a lot of vertical FOV, disabling head tracking, and letterboxing down 960x540 per eye for 16:9 content, but would the end result still look decent?

Beautiful. VR is as close as I'll ever get to driving a real Lambo, so I appreciate all the support it can get:)

That's a selective memory you have. I don't believe this for a second. Gaf seems pretty normal on this. Which is to say the majority like FPS games. A vocal minority hates them. And a near unanimous agreement that crappy CoD clones is destroying the industry (which is different from hating FPS games).

You'd probably only get fidelity similar to an SD signal for legacy content -- not really worth it. Once you get into the 4k display territory things would be different.
