Skylanders: Swap Force for PS3, 360, WiiU, PS4, XB1, release Oct 13 US, Oct 18 EU

Vicarious Visions is making Skylanders: Swap Force for the PS4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and the Wii U. Beenox is making the Wii version, and n-Space is making the Nintendo 3DS version.

Activision announced a release date of 18th October 2013 in Europe, 13th October in the US and 16th October in Australia. We suspect this relates to the non-next-gen versions, as release dates for Sony and Microsoft's new consoles have not been announced.

Why would this be on any next-gen platform??
Why not? It's not like it takes much effort to port the game and launch buyers are always inclined to buy many software titles with their new consoles. And it's Activision.

Yeah, the Skylanders target demographic is not likely to buy a new $400 (or more) console at launch. But I guess Activision's bean counters think it'll be worth it anyway.

Dad or mom can use it as an excuse to buy a new system. 'It's not just for the new CoD, little Timmy gets a better Skylanders.'

You'd think they'd still get some decent sales out of Wii?

Casual/family games still sell decently on it. Perhaps not as well as they did at the height of Wii's success, but the last Skylanders sold best on Wii, and there was at least one holiday month where JD4 Wii outsold Halo 4, IIRC.

I'm curious as to how its going to sell on the Wii U. Most people will probably just go for the Wii version unless there's something else on it to attract kids this holiday and even then people might go for the Wii version if its cheaper.

Well, I pre-ordered it on hte Wii U for my kid, if that means anything haha. Also getting him Lego Marvel Super Heroes, Scribblenauts Unmasked and probably Super Mario. He loves the thing. He's 5, and playing on the pad with the screen and buttons in his eyeline is perfect. Got him Giants on Wii U too.

We've got the first 2 on Wii. Unless there is a compelling reason to pick up the Wii U version, I'm very likely to get the Wii one again. The Wii is in the play room, Wii U is on my good TV in the living room. My 7 year old isn't going to care either way really. So what you got planned Activision?

PS4 and Xbone versions shock me really. They seemed disappointed in how poorly the Wii U one sold last year, and these will only sell worse.

I own Giants on the Wii U. It's great.

Great how? Did co-op when using the pad still keep you on the same screen as the other player?

1080p, off-tv play, and I liked the statistic stuff on the gamepad.

Unfortunately not, but as Plinko said, off tv play and slightly better visuals (although likely nothing your kids would noticed). Ours even plays on the pad if the tv is available. Played some myself and it did look nice.

I have to say, as a HUGE huge fan of the first two games (to the point that I spent far more money than I should have done importing figures, getting variants, et cetera)... I have very little interest in this one.

Maybe when it gets closer to the time I will change my mind but after giving Activision another chance with Giants in terms of collecting figures (and finding them getting progressively worse after the initial wave), I don't want to go through the aggravation again. Plus I don't really like the designs of the Swaplanders.

Maybe I'll try and get figures when they're on special offer, and see if I can pick the game up on the cheap down the line.

So does that mean consoles released prior to that? Or will we actually see games on sale prior to the consoles?

Think it just means exactly what it meant with the wii u version of skylanders, they'll release those versions at xbox one/ps4 launch. The Wii U version of Skylanders Giants launched a month later than the others for example.

Activision is so eager to kill this brand.

They definitely are capable of running it into the ground, as seen with Guitar hero, but I will say in their defence that kids are so much more enthusiastic for this stuff, they always want more. That's not an excuse to overdo it, but looking at our 5 year old and all his friends at school right now, they'll take a new set yearly, some probably more than that. They all collect them, some have them all, they talk about them with each other, my kid has taken various skylanders in for show and tell a whole bunch of times now, he has t-shirts etc., it really is another level of consumption if you can tap into the age group's mind share. I wouldn't financially support buying ours more figures than they're doing yearly right now, but I would likely buy him 2 games a year, if they tried something a bit different with the second game, 3d platformer or something rather than the kiddy diablo style thing right now.

(wrote this with an ice cream in one hand ha, so apologys if there's typos etc)

My 6 year old liked the first two as did his classmates but I am not sure about this. Might be too much too soon.

Show him the trailer and find out haha, I made the mistake of showing ours the swap force trailer when they debuted it a few months ago, he mentions it on a daily basis >_< haha "when is it out" etc, he always wants me to show him the pictures of them again. He seems very impressed with the swappable bodies. I'll buy ihm the starter kit at the end of October and the rest of wave one will make a couple of easy to pick out xmas presents in November.

This could purely just be a high level of enthusiasm here compared to other groups of kids, but I see plenty of kids at the school at pick up time with skylanders lunch bags and that kind of thing.

Skylanders is very big for Activision's business. Sales on the Wii U will be interesting after doing so well on Wii.

Why would this be on any next-gen platform??

Wii U uncertainty. There's no downside to put it on everything this year. I can't cost that much to put it on all the consoles. It's even on the 3DS.

I can't say I'm disapointed, coming from a publisher who sell next-gen N64 fish AI.

We don't know if the Wii U's NFC reader would handle Activision's security the same way the portal does. NFC is a universal standard, but things start to go awry when you add security bits into the codes.
