In-Game Chat is a weekly radio show and podcast that covers video gaming and the games industry. We play games of every type on nearly every platform. We review what games we can and conduct interviews with talent, technicians, and management from the creative side of gaming whenever we're able. We offer strong opinions and we're suckers for hype, but we check facts, ask questions and we're wrong a lot. We broadcast live every Saturday from the heart of the American south, and we're pretty sure we don't have accents.

Broadcasts live on Twitch, Saturdays at 6-8 pm central (7-9 pm eastern)

Podcast version usually hits on Tuesdays:

I was introduced to this show in eots original thread, which was mainly used for discussion of that particular episode. We thought it would be a good idea to create a new, episode agnostic thread.

I find this show to be one of the more interesting, smart, and level headed ones out there. Theyre pretty damn good and do a real nice job at expressing their opinions in a nice, well thought out manner. A good change of pace from some of the other gaming shows out there and a worthy addition to my weekly rotation.

Thanks for making a proper thread :)
I think they're on twitch now though and not ustream. Also, pretty impressed that Scott is actually sticking with The Witcher!

Is twitch permanent? I couldnt find a link for it and the site still has ustream links so thats what I went with.

Im thrilled that hes sticking with The Witcher. Its one of my favorite series so it makes me happy to see others enjoying it.

LOLed hard at the EVO stuff at the beginning of the latest episode. James was so clueless. I think I know as much about it as he does so I can definitely relate.

New episode:

http://ingamechat.net/audio/IGC20130727.mp3

I canÂ’t say for sure whatÂ’s gone wrong lately with people whose job it is to craft, promote, and celebrate video games. I understand that games are literally serious business, and in a certain light might well be confused with serious art, but the lengths to which heads have gone up asses is beyond my ability to understand. I know how easily a cause or an argument can grow to fill your entire field of view, but I donÂ’t know how a person can stand to let what should be a cherished pastime become a bone of such incredible contention. There are a lot of folks (myself included, sometimes) who should lighten up, maybe, and just enjoy some games.

I actually caught most of this live on Saturday for a change. It was fun to sit there and chat while watching.

Just a heads up: The RSS feed is pulling up last weeks episode for some reason. You can correct this by changing the "20130720" at the end of the link to "20130727"

Yeah, Twitch seems to run a lot better for us and the viewers than UStream ever did so we plan on sticking with it. The software we use for that broadcast also lets us record the show for editing and YouTube positng after.

As for The Witcher, I stuck with it and wrapped it up just yesterday. Feels good to only have one game in the way of Witcher 3 instead of 2.

It was a bit tough to get through as in many parts it wasn't that great looking and I really burned myself out trying to cover ALL the side quests. Still, after it was all done and over with I'm still looking just as much forward to playing 2 as I was to start the first game. Hell, I'm almost kind of interested in the books too. Really love the lore.

Nice.

The Witcher 1 can be tough to play these days. Theres a stretch during Act 2-3 when all you are looking at are sewers and swamps repeated over and over. It starts to drag but the story nut in you wants to stick it out. It ends up being worth it but it definitely tests your will to finish.

Great game, though. As you said, the lore is really good. I love that world.

WeÂ’re exploring the overworld at the following link.

It’s not uncommon for the developer of a newly announced MMOG to promise players the moon and stars and to insist they’ll offer a revolutionary way of getting there. What’s strange to me is to see them (apparently) abandon the safest choices made by their peers, and to borrow so heavily from the most successful games in nearly every other genre and category. If Everquest Next can deliver on even a portion of what they’ve promised and alluded to, then it will be well worth our time to investigate everything it has to offer. But the odds are against them – against all of us, really – and I’m beginning to doubt the moon and stars exist at all.

WeÂ’re head over heels at the following link.

While itÂ’s nice to be rewarded for skepticism with the sure knowledge that you dodged a bullet or avoided an unwise purchase, itÂ’s a far better thing to be pleasantly surprised by something you hadnÂ’t been hoping for at all. In this case, having never strapped one of the contraptions to my own head, IÂ’ve been doubtful of the Oculus RiftÂ’s capabilities and IÂ’ve harrumphed about it often. But the consistent goodwill toward the Rift has it creeping up my interest meter, and now, with the joining of John CarmackÂ’s positronic cyborg brain to the Oculus imaginarium, I have no choice but to be excited for whatever the hell it is that thing will do. No choice at all.

It would be hard for us to hide or deny our love of up-to-the-minute facts about the state of the games business or the progress of our most anticipated titles, but a reveal wouldn’t amount to much without the anticipation. For that to work, publishers have to cultivate their lies and develop their policies in secret, and we try to remember that some degree of misdirection is fair. But there’s a point beyond which every word they utter becomes suspect, and no two of us seems to agree on where that line should be placed. We’ve been told by what passes for games journalism that gamers seem incapable of rising above their own entitlement – to product, price, and content – but it seems that where information is concerned, many of them have forgotten to pick the plank out of their own eye first.

I got into listening to this after the Xbox One Reveal Event (TV, TV, TV, Sports, Call of Duty, Halo TV).

Great podcast with some passionate yet level-headed people.

We appreciate the kind words and continued support. I just wanted to pop in and let everyone know we're doing a special episode this weekend focusing on video game music. We're going completely commercial free for the whole 2 hours and have quite a few interviews lined up for the broadcast.

Stephen Barton will join us live on the show to talk about his work on composing music for games such as Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare and Respawn's new title, Titanfall.

Also on the show we'll be speaking with Tom Salta who's list of games include Red Steel, Ghost Recon, H.A.W.X., and, most recently, HALO: Spartan Assault.

And finally, we'll be speaking with Tommy Tallarico, one of the most well known video game composers and currently the guy behind, in front, and on either side of Video Games Live. He's currently in the middle of a Kickstarter to raise money for a 3rd album of studio recorded pieces from various games.

In addition to these interviews we'll be playing music from games that listeners have sent in over the past few weeks, plus some selections from the composers we'll be interviewing. If anybody has any questions for these guys, just leave them here in the thread and we'll ask them live on the air this weekend.

WeÂ’re soothing the savage breast at the following link.

As something of an experiment, weÂ’ve decided to focus this episode more on the listening than the talking. Music has been integral to the experience of games for nearly as long as there have been games to enjoy, and weÂ’d like to take some time out to highlight some of our favorites and yours, and to share a few moments with creators and composers of soundtracks and soundscapes. WeÂ’ll be repeating this experiment from time to time, so enjoy it now, but get in touch with us and request or comment on your favorite tracks for shows to come.

Really looking forward to listening to this tomorrow. I love me some videogame music.

We really enjoyed doing this episode and have plans to do it again in the future. So much good music out there.

Anyway, just a head's up, we're going to be talking to voice actors from The Walking Dead on the 21st.

We'll be speaking with Dave Fennoy (Lee) and Cissy Jones (Katjaa & Shel/Dee from 400 Days) and if anyone has any questions for them, just post them here and we'll ask them on the air.

WeÂ’re in an uneasy alliance at the following link.

Herein: our love of cooperative gameplay, be it an organized MMO dungeon crawl or frantic arena combat. Also, the tribulations of Final Fantasy XIVÂ’s return to market, SteamÂ’s half-answer to account sharing, a new sort of Vita, and a troubling lack of enthusiasm for the new Grand Theft Auto.

Currently obsessed with FFXIV so any talk about it is good in my book. Actually saw James livestreaming it a few times but I didnt watch because I was too busy playing it myself :p
Also really want to hear the GTA stuff. Im lacking enthusiasm for it as well.

Sorry I missed last week. Hectic times here at work :(

WeÂ’re free and open at the following link.

It was only ever going to be about Valve this past week and, as you might imagine, a single hour is hardly enough time to digest the news openly and come to terms with how we feel. We do a better job chatting up Zach Barth from Zachtronics (Future Technologies Consolidated), discussing past release SpaceChem and present release Ironclad Tactics. Also, Grand Theft Auto 5 is still happening for some people, but I guess we donÂ’t care anymore.

Probably going to queue myself up in FFXIVs duty finder tonight and listen to this while I wait....and wait...and wait. Should make the time go faster :P
Thanks, guys!

Thanks for keeping the thread updated. I've been trying to have a guest on each week since I got back from PAX and so far that's working. Down to the wire at times, but working.

Tonight we'll have an interview with Undead Labs about State Of Decay.

Thanks again...and by the way, if anyone has any suggestions for the show or people you'd like us to try and interview, by all means please let us know.

Robert Ashley is local to you guys I think. Not sure the feasibility of getting him on the show, but would probably be very entertaining if you had good topics and a theme of discussion. He was great on Podcasts and his, "A Life Well Wasted" is one of the best video game podcasts ever.

Finally catching up this morning. Ill be buying Outlast because of this interview. Really like this guy.

Good stuff as always. I especially liked the resoltuon talk. You guys seem to get it.

Thanks for catching up and for the kind words as always. Just finished up an interview with Rand Miller from this past weekend's show and that should be up tomorrow.

Hope to get this thread more active cause we love the feedback and participation from the community with the show and the streams.

Thanks again, Salaadin, and to everyone else - thanks for listening.

Just checked this out for the first time. I like the content a lot, it's a very different vibe to most video game podcasts, and I appreciate the change of pace.

One issue I have, and it's quite a big one for me personally, is that the microphones or perhaps the sound processing seems to accentuate unpleasant sounds from at least two of the hosts, specifically lip smacking, saliva, breathing, etc. Not sure if it's fixable but it's currently an annoyance in an otherwise welcome addition to my subscribed set of podcasts.

Thanks for listening and we're glad you liked it. As for the different vibe, we have 2 very strict hours to get our points across since we're on live FM radio. It's actually less than that since we have to run commercials during the program, but yeah - short amount of time to get it all in.

As for the unpleasantries, we'll look to cut down on them or I'll try and fix it in the production after the show. Thanks for pointing it out though, we appreciate it!

WeÂ’re hearkening back at the following link.

The consoles are damned close now, arenÂ’t they? WeÂ’re near the end of a six-month campaign of speculation, spec comparisons, theorycrafting, and shit-slinging, and weÂ’re about to enter a six-year period sure to be filled with more of the same. ItÂ’s nice to take a quiet moment, then, and enjoy oneself by tearing through a flimsy package and liberating a fresh new toy. For a few minutes, the PS4 was less important than its controller, and the console war less interesting than the satisfying click of a button.

In an effort to get even further away from a cynical present, we connect with a wonderful memory and speak with one of the men who helped deliver it. Twenty years after the release of Myst, Rand Miller of Cyan, inc joins us to discuss the development of exploration and puzzle-solving game Obduction, and the history of the games that shaped a genre.

Id like to see more activity here too.

I dont want to sound too kiss assy here but theres a lot of "lol games journalism" stuff going around and a lot of gamers crying out because there arent many places to go to listen to a discussion on the current state of the games industry without them trying to even the playing field, move the goalposts, or just make things up for the sake of it. Your show does none of that and I feel like it falls more in line with what I feel. I think a lot of gaf would really enjoy it too.

I actually went back and re-listened to the 10/26 episodes opening conversation after watching Sesslers Something from last night because I felt your conversation about "resolutiongate" was so on point compared to what we are getting nearly everywhere else.

Btw, I bought Outlast. That shit is scary. I thought I was going to have a heart attack last night playing it. I cant deal with it!!

Thanks for that. We hope a lot of GAF does eventually take notice and we hope they enjoy what they hear. Hell, a lot of times on the show we'll be referencing a thread James and I read on GAF so a lot of our discussions usually spawn from threads (and comments) here.

I guess that means you like Outlast, huh? I still haven't bought the game. They gave us two copies for Steam but we gave them away on the show.

Anyway, as always, thanks for keeping the thread alive. And to any newcomers, let us know you're listening and how you like the show. Going to be some fun times ahead with the new consoles in the next two weeks.

Oh yeah, definitely. Im a huge wuss though and can only play these types of games for short bursts. Outlast will probably last me until Halloween next year :P

I'm the same. Usually we just invite friends over to watch James play them. Easier to deal with that way. Also, it's actually a lot of fun to get scared as a group.

Just letting people know we're interviewing Twisted Pixel tomorrow for a broadcast on Saturday's show. If anyone has questions to pass along and get answered, just post in this thread or PM me.

Thanks for the update!

We appreciate you keeping the thread alive and yeah, we hope to get a nice IGC community here at GAF as well.

We're a bunch of no-names, and that's fine. Things like this take time. I think near half our listening audience didn't know we existed until we had Hayter on our show, and then again with Hamill. So, we'll get there. Just gotta keep doing what we're doing and appreciate the support we get from the listeners here on GAF and elsewhere.

Just wanted to chime in and say I really enjoy the podcast, started listening last summer and it quickly became a must listen.

Have to say as a slight criticism, I don't enjoy the interview segments that much, not that they are badly done, just that they end up being a little overly long and covering things that aren't inherently interesting to me. Like how did said developer become a developer, or meet their development partner, or what jobs did they have. It's not that this is TERRIBLE, its just that I'd rather hear you guys talk about games. Maybe you could put really relevant snippets within the show and full audio released separately kind of like GiantBomb's Audio Dumptruck? Anyways just one man's opinion. Either way, very enjoyable.

Thanks! Glad you like it. We don't actually get very many interviews to do and the little feedback we've gotten on them has been positive. Length is an issue and we try to keep them at 30 minutes or less with some exceptions (the hour long we had with Compulsion Games about Contrast comes to mind - but we split that into 2 parts). We'll look into the dumptruck idea, and it's a neat one. Something we've tried to find are supplement segments to go along with the show and that would be a great one, I think.

Thanks for the feedback.

300th Episode tomorrow night. We've got some surprise guests calling in and some giveaways to do on the air as well. I believe we'll have some Destiny beta keys to give out, so it'll help to be there live in the twitch chat room in order to win.

Loved the thoughts about Ground Zeroes in the latest episode. Exactly how I feel.
Just put my 23rd hour into it. It's insanely replayable.

Also, feel better Scott!

Also, feel better Scott!

Thanks!

I'm out of the hospital and should be back on Saturday's show. Also, this past weekend's show should be ready tonight sometime or tomorrow at the latest. It's been a delay, but to be expected when you're unexpectedly sent to the ER on a Friday.

Appreciate all the support.

Been watching the show for a while Scott and I'm loving it so far.
I do have a few questions though,
1. How'd you get a show like this on the air? What's the story of how it started?
a. How well does this show actually do?
2. What do you guys talk about during breaks?

3. What do you guys do for work?

4.Not a question, Just wanted to say that I hope you feel better.

Thanks for watching and replying - and my apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

So, let's hit those questions:

1. The group of us pretty much sit around and talk about games whenever we're together, just as we do on the show, so we thought we'd try it out on the radio. I work at a radio station as my day job so I asked for the time and the powers that be granted it to us. I actually posed it as a tech/gaming type show. Something more broad than just games since I worried that wouldn't fly (turns out it flew quite well, actually).

A. No idea really. If you're talking rating on the radio, we do well for what we are but it doesn't put a dot on the scale really. It's very low numbers.

2. Usually we finish a thought we were talking about on the show or quickly find our next topic for the next segment.

3. Matt is in the military (he's leaving us very soon), I work at the station we broadcast from, I'm actually not sure what ArJay and Dennis do specifically. And James...well, he's on GAF so I'll let him tell you.

4. Thanks! I'm slowly on the mend but SO much better than I was this past Saturday night on the show.

Just a quick bump to the thread. We've done plenty of episodes since this thread was updated, but this past week we had an interview with Neil Druckmann and Jason Gregory from Naughty Dog talking about The Last Of Us Remastered.

Clicking here will take you to just before the interview. And it's about 30 minutes in length.

It turned out to be way more technical of a discussion on the remaster than I had initially expected. And, as it turns out, was more entertaining than I was expecting given that fact.

Thanks for listening and watching.
