I know there are some people excited about Killzone Shadow Fall, Driveclub, and Knack. However, I think it's quite fair to say that lineup isn't lighting most people's hair on fire to buy a PS4 day one. There are lots of reasons to be excited about the PS4, but that exclusive launch lineup isn't looking stellar. All three might turn out to be solid games, but I think the launch window lineup could have been better. Here are my thoughts on how.
For starters, why does Driveclub even exist? I think this is very fair question to ask. Sony already has the premiere sim racer in Gran Turismo, so creating another simmish racer just strikes me as the strangest decision. Have Evolution cranking out a crazy arcade racer of some sort. At least that would create a new standout franchise for the PS4. Driveclub is just depressing every time I think about it.
I think Sony needs to manage these in house teams better, and they should have demanded back in 2010 that Polyphony was going to have Gran Turismo 6 out in the fall of 2012 on PS3. A two year window is not asking too much, and tons of teams pull it off. Yes, you'd have to pull back the scope a bit, but that's exactly what this team needs, some discipline. Then, they could have ensured a GT6 "PS4 edition" for the launch window. So now you've got an exciting arcade racer from Evolution at launch, and a Gran Turismo game following soon after. That would have been a great one two punch.
Knack. I won't ask why this exists, but as a fan of character action games I'd be lying if I said this game has me excited. The initial reveal in February had me intrigued, but as soon as we saw real gameplay at E3 it didn't get anyone excited. IMO having Cerny lead a team making a new Crash Bandicoot or Jak and Daxter game seems like a far smarter idea. At least there you've already got great mascots in place, and you're not creating one that looks as bland as Knack. Hell, even Puppeteer would have been a nice choice for the PS4 launch. It's not going to sell gangbusters on PS3 anyway, so why not put it on the new console where it could look even better, and get people excited about something new that looks great?
I'll leave Killzone alone, as I think it makes sense to have an exclusive shooter at launch, and I'm confident this game will be solid, and probably score the highest among the three PS4 launch games.
Anyway, in my world the PS4 launch lineup would look like this.
Killzone Shadow Fall
Crazy Arcade Racer from Evolution
Crash Bandicoot or Jak and Daxter game headed by Cerny
Maybe Puppeteer too.
Then next Spring they'd have Infamous and Gran Turismo 6 PS4 Edition still coming. I think that lineup would have garnered a lot more buzz than the current one.
