I wish the game looked that good. But from the E3 stuff I've seen, I don't think it will look next gen at all.

While I am disappointed that it isn't the sneakfest I had anticipated prior to e3, I still have high hopes it will be fun when it hits the $40 dollar range.

So...are the Pagans, Hammerites and Keepers gone? Replaced by a dodgy, generic 'the good guys (poor people) throw off the shackles of oppression and in the process...become the oppressors!'? Hmm.

Is the gameplay really that bad? I thought it looked decent from what I've seen. But then again I've never played the OG Thief.

Looks real good in theory. Hopefully in application the game will be as fun as Dishonored and Deus Ex despite not having a jump button and context sensitive grapple points. I remain cautiously optimistic for now.

Witcher 3 cgi trailer released: OMG SO GUD.

Thief cgi trailer released: Ugh i'm so over cgi trailers!

I dunno, this looked really good, and honestly I think the cgi was actually really really top notch stuff. Hoping they get the game 100% ironed out for release!

I think we inherently give Witcher 3 a pass because most of the articles, previews, and developer quotes about the game have been quite encouraging. If they show a CGI trailer we say, "Cool, but I wish there was gameplay."

For Thief, nearly every article has indicated this is a dumbed down game having little in common with the gameplay mechanics of the original Thief. Previews have been mixed to negative. Thus when we see a CGI trailer it gives us the impression they're hiding the gameplay.

I'll agree there is some confirmation bias involved, but I think it's justified given everything I've seen and read about this silly game.

I don't know about bias. I usually hate CGI trailers and was actually very reluctant to even watch the Killing Monsters trailer, but I'm glad I did because I thought it was incredible (and looks like it was verbatim a passage of one of the books).

I'll watch this one too, but if it's not incredible it'll be on the "sigh CGI" pile along with many other videos from many other games, some of them I love.

I watched another E3 video from Thief yesterday and it did change my mind about the game, I still despise detective mode and that stuff, but aside from that it looks pretty damn good.

But we've seen a gameplay trailer of Witcher, we haven't seen any in game footage of Thief.

Trailer looks cool, but I probably wont get hyped till they show us some in game stuff.

edit: Is their in game footage of thief? I must have missed it.

Wait this game is coming out in February? Seriously? Lol. Not sure if I agree with that decision but sure... whatever works.

The witcher 3 thread actually has its fair share of "ugh, CGI" posts.

A lot more than we saw from Witcher 3

Eh. Nothing in that trailer that would sell me on the game. If the gameplay is decent though, it could be alright. I'll remain on the fence.

And let's not forget that The Witcher 3 is probably not going to disappoint a lot of people (1 and 2 was great game) .

They even removed QTE in The Witcher 3 :P

Can't say the same for Thief reboot .....

Note that this is the same month that Lightning Returns is coming out as well as the fiscal year ending at the end of March for SE. They're probably just releasing it to make as much money as they can before the year ends. Given how I think it's a poor decision to release the two games in the same month. Also, just for shits and giggles I'm gonna throw out that FFXHD is gonna come out in February. Cuz... why not? It's SE.

Box art also got revealed:

There are like 4 different art styles going on in this trailer:

- CG
- ingame footage
- Artwork
- live action

It looks messy. Not to mention most of it is a rehash from previous trailers. Clearly going for the Deus Ex Human Revolution angle.

This game is receiving a lot of hate from Thief fans, but I'm not one of them. They seemingly want the exact same game as the ones before, but in my humble opinion they haven't aged as well as they think. Anyway, the more stealth-based games the better, and it looks good enough from what I've seen.

That's an unfair accusation, I'd be fine if they improved some of the clunkier mechanics from the old games. But instead of doing that they've removed control from the player, added unnecessary things like focus mode and scripted, QTE-ridden sequences.

I think SE considers Thief more of a liability than something of great net income. The game is practically being sent out to die and hopefully it'll make as much money as they can. Considering they're not releasing this in January, it's safe to assume that they believe the game is somewhat ready by the time they go gold whenever and launches in February. In March it'll be too late as the fiscal year would be wrapping up and there isn't enough time for sales to pull through. I think SE is treating Thief almost like a Western Lightning Returns. Almost.

The QTE stuff I just read is definitely a shame. The focus mode I'm indifferent to, you can either use it or ignore it.

I don't know about it being sent out to die. What's so wrong about releasing in February?

Anyone getting a A:CM vibe off of this? Wasn't there something about this switching the team so much that the original vision was lost? No Focus?

Currently my hopes are zero for this game. The QTEs they've chosen to implement are nothing short of a disgrace and completely disrespectful.

My whole beef with these games is stop cashing in on nostalgia from older classics.

Make whatever game you want and say you were inspired by Thief, but if it's not Thief don't call it Thief. Simple as that.

It's being released on the same month as another SE title. It's being released almost right before a fiscal year is ending despite it being touted as a huge AAA title, and it's had a history of being a development problem. It's a liability for SE so they're trying to get it out the door as fast as they can while making a profit.

The CGI trailer makes me think this will be way too generic and cliche in comparison to other gaming trends as of late.
DAY 1 BUY.

I hope to be proven wrong, as the first 3 games were nothing short of spectacular.

Really? I played the Thief games for the first time last year and I thought they held up beautifully. Easily the best stealth games I've ever played.

Even so, I'm also in the camp that think this new Thief looks great. Some of the details worry me, but they don't seem like they'll kill the core thieving game. Don't let us down, Eidos.

compared to the story and the atmosphere of thief: the dark project this is a bit of a letdown. pseudo ethical and moral justification suits robin hood not garet. give ken levine a call

But then saying a game is Thief-inspired still doesn't get as much attention, as I should know :P

I know, brother. It's all in the marketing. :)

(Nice to see Tangiers made it!)

But most people will play and enjoy Thief. It'll get 8.5 - 9.0 scores across the board with major review sites.

Dare I suggest a significant percentage of gamers under 20 haven't played or possibly heard of the original Thief before? Not meant to be an elitist or condescending remark. It just might have been before their time.
