A fresh mix of Intel-based Chromebooks — something for everyone

Chromebooks were designed to make computers faster, simpler, safer and much more affordable for everyone. Over the past year, with the launch of Chromebooks by a number of our partners for as low as $199, they have become the go-to laptop for many people. We’re pleased to see consumers, schools and businesses react positively to Chromebooks. Research firm NPD says Chromebooks represent 20-25% of the $300-or-less computer segment. In education, more than 5,000 schools have deployed Chromebooks for their students, representing more than 20% of school districts in the US.

Together with our hardware partners, we’ve been working on expanding the Chromebook family. Intel, who has been with us on this journey from day one, unveiled a new lineup of Chromebooks today based on the Haswell microarchitecture at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Intel’s latest processors sip less power to improve battery life by more than 2X over previous generations, while offering increased performance. This means these new Chromebooks last almost all day so you can focus on getting things done.

Over the coming months, you’ll see Chromebooks from multiple device manufacturers. These include newly designed Chromebooks from Acer and HP, as well as new entrants ASUS and Toshiba.

Across the new lineup, the devices offer superb battery life and a variety of new designs—from a light and portable Acer Chromebook, to the large display on the HP Chromebook14, which comes in various colors; from the versatility and portability of the Toshiba Chromebook, to the ASUS Chromebox, suitable anywhere you need a computer. With today’s announcement, now six of the top laptop manufacturers are offering Chromebooks.

It’s been amazing to see the broadening of the Chromebook spectrum and we look forward to continued advances in both the hardware and software. Now more than ever, a new Chromebook truly offers something for everyone.

Bought my girlfriend the ARM based one a few months ago. If the price stays relatively cheap, upgrade here we come. Hoping for better Linux performance due to Haswell.

I need deets specifically price.

Currently I'm more interested in a refresh of the Samsung Chromebook than anything else.

Something smaller like the Acer might be okay, but I just have this feeling the price isn't gonna compete.

My old Samsung Chromebook has given me 12 hours of constant web browsing. Can watch youtube, netflix and play downloaded mp4's.

That thing has a shitty shitty shitty little atom processor in it.

The whole point of chromebook is that all you need is the basic processing power to render a page. All the heavy computational work should be done server side.

Nah, they're not true cloud thin-clients in that way. HTML5 and web apps are ever more demanding so more spec power is always a good thing.

True. I'm just disappointed they can only quote <10 hours battery life.

Haswell gave us a massive battery boost. Why are we not seeing 15-20 hours chromebooks?

Acer and HP?

Holy fuck these are gonna be built out of trash bags lol
I have an Acer Chromebook and I'm really impressed with it's build (for something I bought for $130.)

It even has one of the better trackpads I've used yet. Way better than Levenos that cost five times as much.

Intel-based Chromebooks until now were only about 7 hours. 10 is a noticeable step up, and Google tends to underrate these things so it might be around 11, I'd bet.

Wow, these look pretty hot for $300. They should be way more powerful and last longer than last year's Samsung ARMbook, and only $50 more and three color options? I think HP's gonna clean up with these. 14 inches is a fantastic screen size, too.

The only question hanging over it is the trackpad, which only Samsung and Google seem to have gotten right so far with Chromebooks. (Also, maybe weight... almost 4 lbs sounds kinda heavy.)

I'm sure you'll feel it too.

Not sure if I want at that price.
Do they work without an Internet connection?

Some apps do, some don't. The new version of Chrome apps are offline-capable by default.

I'm sure you'll feel it too.

?

I might pick some up for my family for Christmas. The ARMbook was a great piece of kit but the screen was a bit small and washed out, and the build quality was a bit creaky. These are hopefully better about that, and I know the colors will go over with them really well.

Those look better than any of the cheap Windows notebooks HP has ever made :)
Even the moderately priced Envy line absolutely sucks. Really horrible trackpads.
You'd think a company that makes mostly Windows notebooks they'd have dried harder...

Kinda weird to see a 14" screen being called large. But those HP models look pretty sharp.

Holy shit, I laughed. Actually, this is quite true for some of their Envy lines since they had to rebuild their R&D departments and used their old designs for heat sinking and dissipation.

and pavillion series as well. they put the vents on the bottom. at least the dv7 my friend got lol. like seriously.

Yep. One of the things I don't like about the Chromebook Pixel is how hot it gets and how easy it is to make it heat up. Are all Ultrabooks like this?

Ahhh. Yeah, PIxel does heat up especially if you set it down on cloth. I think the problem is it has no vents and it's made of metal.

And HP is throwing in 200MB of free T-Mobile 4G data per month for two years, so the laptop can be used when you can't find a Wi-Fi signal.

Pretty nice (and double the 100 MB that's been standard with Chromebooks thus far.) I wonder if it's a single model that includes 4G or (more likely) there's going to be a more expensive 4G model (and how much more... the Samsung Chromebook 3G was $80 more expensive. =/)

tmobile huh. wonder if i can just slapt an unlimited no contract plan on it lol.

Hmm don't see why not... that could actually be pretty awesome. Hell you might even be able to hotswap your unlimited 4G phone sim with it as the situation demands... Now that it's not locked down thanks to Verizon, a lot of possibilities are opened up.

i'm glad they switched from verizon. tmobile is awesome here. that 4G. does it use microsim or regular sim?

Regular sim I would imagine. These things are fairly large (14" screen, 4 lbs and all.)

I might consider getting this for my mom for her birthday/christmas. she says the nexus 7 is too small for her to watch movies (basically all that she does with the n7) at work. and she's with tmobile as well. so it works out fine. just need to see the reviews on this.

These look....beautiful.

That Blue-Green one...oh man. I don't even need a Chromebook for anything...but I'm soooo going to buy that.

those look pretty nice.

I'm surprised Google has such a big chunk of the laptop market. I guess everyone is still off chasing those high-end Apple dollars to care.

The Acer one looks pretty standard, not bad like their $200 one but not great either.

Seems like it's thin and light though, so that's a plus.

I really want to know the screen resolution of the 14" HP one.

Also, I think I would miss having the Super key... I use it all the time in Ubuntu.

$350 full windows 8, Haswell, hybrid laptop/tablet
Also there are plenty of sub $300 laptops already out there. There's really no reason to get something like this unless you just hate Windows for some reason and love Google.

I talk about quality, and all you give me is links with prices. What was your point?
It is well known how inconsistent the cheap Windows laptops are. I've had to deal with my fair share, so my "dog shit" comment wasn't me making stuff up.

More specs.

Acer:

Starting with a new (and much thinner (0.75 inch) as well as lighter (2.76 pounds)) Acer Chromebook, you can expect a pretty significant bump in the battery life, which will now last up to 8.5 hours.

As far as specs go, it’s business as usual: 11.6 inch 1366 x 768 resolution display, two USB ports, HDMI port, SD Card slot and a standard headphone jack.

HP:

In addition to the Haswell CPU and 1,366 x 768 display resolution, HP Chromebook 14 comes in three different colors (and they do look spectacular): Snow White, Ocean Turquoise and Coral Peach. In addition to that, it packs solid battery improvements that will keep it running for up to 9.5 hours.

There’s also a 16GB hard drive, two USB ports, HD webcam, an SD card slot and a HDMI port. As far as dimensions and weight go, HP Chromebook 14 is 0.81-inch thin and weighs 4.08 pounds, a lot more than Acer. But then again, you get a bigger display in return so think carefully.
