Kickstarter to create an online photographic museum of consoles.

I just found this:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1699256938/the-vanamo-online-game-museum

The goal seems to create an open online database with high quality pictures of almost every console ever created. There are several stretch goals for adding more consoles to the database.

Here are a few examples of what this project intends:

I found the idea pretty cool if we could get a real database of every console from the outside and the inside, but maybe the stretch goals are a bit too high.

That's awesome. Someone fighting for better quality images on the internet will definitely be someone I support and an online library sounds super cool.

His photos were even behind our Lord and savior Mark Cerny!

This is a great idea! Gaming consoles have a very fascinating history and its extremely difficult to find much information online or elsewhere about some of the more obscure, older ones (i.e. Fairchild System F.) Maybe if this really gets off the ground, there could be a physical museum some day. There was an exhibit recently on video game art in the Smithsonian recently.. so there is precedent!

What a fascinating project! I hope the Kickstarter succeeds; it's very generous-spirited of Mr Amos (I guess that's his name?) to do this in the name of education. And it seems like a relatively reasonable goal, too, at 8.5k.

What would of course be truly fascinating would be for it to reach the stretch goals and document the innards of the weird and wonderful consoles we don't know much about.

Ooh, this'd be cool. Especially if they managed to get the most unusual and cool collectable consoles that you wouldn't usually see. So many Dreamcasts to be added...

I had no idea one dude was responsible for all the crazy high quality images on wikipedia. That's pretty noble of him.

I hope the game blogs out there make posts about this project to get it more out there. They clearly owe it to him as you can see in the video.

So... this dude wants people to fund him a physical collection of every video game console and he'll take pictures in return?

lol.

How about I or anyone with a good camera on neogaf do it? I'd love for the internet to buy me a vast physical collection.

So you didn't even watch the whole video. Cool, let me explain it them.

He says he will buy the hardware, take his photos and all that, then donate said hardware to museums and galleries to show then off properly. He says he doesn't plan to keep any of the stuff he buys. I'm sure after he takes his photos most of them will be nonfunctional too.

Maybe if he was putting together photorealistic 3D models that could be examined in a Unity player or something. As it is, no thanks.

Lets say some rich collector philanthropist had all this stuff, and donated to a museum. We probably wouldn't get this cool web resource out of it.

This will actually help me with a project I've been thinking about. Finding really crisp controller photos without drop shadows or weird angles is surprisingly hard.

If he doesn't reach his goal, perhaps he can still have people donate or lend him consoles in pristine condition.

Sorry for not watching the last 40 seconds!

I see on wikipedia his file history for the images over the last few years. It does make a lot sense that the collectors and display units limited his ability to take internal pictures.

This looks really neat. I think the only thing that would make it better is some form of 3D scanning, but I love that he's taking them apart to take pictures of the innards.

(55 hours left, by the way)

Cool I did not check the Kickstarter for a long time and now they have met the goal. I would be awesome if it could make it to 12.500$ for 3DO and CDI, even better up to 15.000$.

That's awesome!! I was a little worried they wouldn't hit it but really happy to see they did. :)

Two days left to throw in your backings, people!
