Favorite: PS3

I ended up getting a PS3 about a week after launch and that was only because I knew people. I missed the preorder window that was like... maybe an hour. I worked in Seattle at the time. Every day after launch I went to about 3-4 stores daily. Before the job I had during the preorder window, I worked at an EB Games and knew a few of the managers. I remember going in to a store 6 days after launch and a 360 fanboy was telling me that every PS3 game would also be on 360 so I may as well buy a 360. Had I not known.... had I been a casual gamer, I would have taken his idiotic word as truth cause he's the one working at the game store. Luckily, I've been a gamer probably since before he was born. I laughed at him and came back the next day. I saw the same moron was there and immediately left. I was going up an escalator and a friend of mine was coming down the escalator. Came to find out he was now the manager of that store and he had a PS3 in the store he wasn't supposed to sell till Black Friday, but he would sell it too me if I wanted it. I came back down to the store and bought it with Resistance and an extra controller. The moron behind the counter tried to interject that they weren't supposed to sell it but he couldn't cut off the manager's decision. It was fantastic.

My favorite series, Uncharted, was born on the PS3. I also loved the Infamous games, RE5, Tomb Raider (2013), Mass Effect 2 and 3, and tons of others. It was an incredible generation.

Neutral: X360

I didn't bother owning one but I had a few friends that had it. It was ok but didn't really have the games I wanted to play outside of third party releases that I could also play on PS3.

Loathe: Wii

Don't get me wrong, many Nintendo specific games still had a tinge of fun in them, but I found out with this system that I ABSOLUTELY HATE motion controls. I almost instantly regretted getting rid of my Gamecube. Luckily, my Wii could play Gamecube games so that's basically what it became. Skyward Sword was the nail in the coffin for me and it ruined me on Nintendo as a whole until the Switch advertising came out stating "Play how you want" and showed the Pro controller. After the Wii-U heavily advertised continued use of the Wii-motes, the system was DOA for me.

The only game of note for me was, Xenoblade.

what a great generation for consoles. I'm going with PS3. Clearly not based on sales. Wii won that, gimmicks and all. Based on the games though, yeah....PS3 100% for me.

I think we as gamers won since Xbox and Sony both were on top of their games, I don't care much about Nintendo

Loved the competition back then. The way PS3 fumbled out the gate but rebounded. 360 putting Xbox on the map in a big way. That was great for everyone, I agree.

I loved the ps3. Probably the best Sony first and second party out put so far.

Who " won ". Probably the Wii.

I really enjoyed the Wii. I miss the IR pointer. PS3 and 360 had a lot of great games too. But at that point I was really over the cores gamer games.

What really got my time as a gamer at that period was the DS. I spent years and years playing it every chance I got. Hundreds of games and they felt fresh to me. It was my first handheld so I caught up to a couple of fantastic GBA games too. Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission. Zelda Minish Cap. To name a few..

I voted PS3 but was so close to 360.
Microsoft had an INCREDIBLE launch. People do not remember how advanced the Xbox Live and general blades UI were at launch. Sony was throwing a shit web store at us a year later and you couldn't even access the XMB while in a game.

Unfortunately Microsoft took that and tried to pivot to a wrong-headed motion control & tv integration place to end the generation with the worst introduction to a NEXT generation anyone has ever seen.

At the end of the generation Sony had a better first party lineup which is why they deserve the additional nod I'd say.

Still have my fat launch day PS3 and I too preferred the PS3 over the 360

RROD on the 360s really helped keep the PS3 in the game after that launch price imo

From sales, innovation and broader appeal perspective, Wii "won". It resonated probably less with hardcore gamers but the massive success is undeniable.

Only console I was able to afford back then was a second-hand Wii for 50 bucks. Still have it! I love that stupid thing. And I can't complain, some friends would lend me their consoles to play some games like RDR, Gears 2 or GTA V when those came out.

PC as I remember it was living a sort of dark age back then: console ports would take a while to come and we had fucked up stuff like games with a DRM that limited the amount of instalations. Thankfully thanks to Steam and GOG we are in a much better place now.

edit: I didn't answer the OP's question. I guess the winners were the players, tons of cool AAA games were coming out back then. Although it was also the start of paid online for the console bros, which fucking sucks.

In sheer sales, ofc Nintendo. But the 360 was a gem of a console which shaped a lot of people's gaming tastes for life.

Xbox

They challenged Sony and succeeded in
The game just ran better on it
The made sure online gaming was a real viable thing

My Grandma in law had a Wii... everybody had a Wii, not only gamers!

It's not even close!

Wii won with the number of units but I think it was crap
360 was the best all around console with the best third party performance
PS3 had the best exclusives

PC won that gen.

PC well and truly LOST that gen. Pre 2010's was possibly the worst era ever for PC between piracy and Intel integrated graphics making the experience miserable for publishers and consumers. Several games were either console exclusive or came with a late PC port. If you were a hardcore gamer, the Xbox was easily the better choice.

Wii was an overclocked Gamecube so i consider it more a continuation of the PS2 gen than a part of the PS3 gen. It also had a lot more games in common with that gen.

PS3 vs. 360 was a clear win for PS3. It had it's problems at the start ( way overblown by the press though) but all the momentum at the end. And of course the far better library.

Didn't amount to anything though, it all went to shit for both Xbox and Playstation after that battle.

Gaming and gamers won.
It was the last generation that rewarded creativity and originality, and when consoles weren't all basically the same thing.
Throw the DS into the picture and you have a gaming era that, sadly, we'll never see again.

Console games were barely running 30fps 720p (often below that), on PC I was playing all games in 1080p/60fps on cheap 8800GS. I still had PS3 for amazing exclusives (360 too).

PS3 of course, PlayStation was the only platform that carried the momentum to the next gen, and it's got everything to do with the PS3 providing more exclusives than 360.

Arguably the Best gen ever.

Games were innovative, we got endless new IP, thoe games laid the foundation for game design to this day, nothing has changed.

XBOX was competitve, SONY took notice, and started dropping Exclusive SP bombs. Sony won in the end. But Xbox had an incredible first few years.

It was over when ND dropped Uncharted 2.

Wii was just trash all around.

360 was my favorite, even as a huge nintendo fan, Wii was not my favorite part of their lineup.

Oblivion, Gears of War 1 & 2, Bioshock, Halo (3, reach), Crackdown, Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden 2, Lost Odyssey, Fable 2, Alan Wake, etc was worth the price of entry 100%.

Fuck, Mass Effect alone in 2007 blew my fucking mind.

Ignoring overall sales and revenue, I think PS3 pulled ahead at the end and was probably the winner in terms of software and public perception. They had a lot of incredible games by the end of that that generation.

There were no winners in this generation, all the consoles were great in their own way and with their own games (I still own all three). An incredibly strong generation of consoles, a situation that is unlikely to happen again.

P.S - But if we rely purely on statistics, Wii naturally won.
