DF: High quality captures of Next Gen BF4 to play on your PS3/PC

Wouldn't it be great if you could get a pre-launch taste of the next-gen visual experience using nothing more than your PlayStation 3 or PC? That's exactly what we aim to achieve with this new Digital Foundry series, Next-Gen Now. As 1080p60 captures finally start to roll in, we aim to deliver a selection of them to you in h.264 MP4 format, using an encoding profile designed to balance bandwidth with quality, allowing for smooth, high-quality playback of next-gen gameplay on a range of devices.

We kick off with the game that has dominated our coverage this week: DICE's Battlefield 4, sharing a selection of our 1080p60 captures acquired during our three-day stay in Stockholm. First up, we have an edited run-through of the initial Fishing in Baku level on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (clipped in places to remove player deaths and pauses in the action where we gawped at edges in order to judge resolution) followed by a selection of multiplayer clips on the new Sony console.

These videos aren't exactly light downloads. To retain detail at 1080p60, we've had to allocate bandwidth in the region of 18 megabits per second for PS4, while 15mbps appears to do the job on the Xbox One edit owing to the lower video range of the captures (see our Q+A for more on that) and reduced resolution. In terms of Xbox One, despite the heavy blacks, there's still plenty of bright outdoors gameplay in the edit, giving you some idea of how the 720p native resolution looks when upscaled to 1080p and to what extent it may be an issue for you. To our eyes, post-processed scenes look quite impressive, but high contrast outdoors areas can show up some brutal aliasing. PS4 is not exempt from the effect, but an extra 50 per cent of resolution clearly makes a difference.

To get an idea of what you're investing gigabytes of bandwidth in downloading, we've also prepared standard def 60fps encodes of each edit too, streamable via the Eurogamer player. If you've only seen BF4 on next-gen console running via YouTube videos, these vids are far more representative of the Battlefield experience.

Error in your first link bro, but downloading PS4 footage now.

Hoping it's not captured terribly like the first batch of footage they have released.

For some reason your link doesn't work, but on the error page doing a search through Google brings the link up as the first result. Downloading the torrent now.

downloading also. finally! some high quality direct captures (of at least the PS4 version... not certain the Xbox One footage isn't the black crushed capture until someone confirms).

This is still the botched Digital Foundry captured video. So don't bother trying to compare the PS4/Xbone using this video.

So glad they went with 60 fps for this. That was what Battlefield needed to feel right on console. Let's hope they manage to keep that for the next game.

Framerate looks butter smooth, but the visual clarity is not so hot. Knowing video games don't compress well I hope it's compression's fault.

Just watched both of the SP videos. I was surprised by how much the resolution makes a difference in IQ. PS4 looks quite a lot better.

It looks very good and runs great on PS4. But still there is that certain fuzzyness that you wouldn't see on a PC version.

But still, this is going to be a glorious, full battlefield experience on either next-gen system.

I am definitely of the opinion that Killzone: Shadow Fall shits all over this game with it's visual presentation though.

Edit: it also doesn't help that i'm watching this from like 10 inches on a 1080p PC monitor. Will display it on PS3 now on the big screen.

Looks like the 900p upscaled gives a free FXAA style effect. Framerate looks good with only a slight judder when panning up and down it seems like. Not uncommon on PC in my experience. PS3 to PS4 players are going to be in for a treat even though I am slightly unimpressed with BF4 after playing BF3 on PC for 2 yeras.

This. In the alleyway on the top left. WHAT is that effect? I HATE it. So many this-gen games have that effect with like how light sorta shimmers in dark areas. Why does it look so damn muddy and low-res? What is causing that? It's horrible.

Apart from the crushed blacks I couldn't see much of a difference between the two versions in screen shots.

Seeing these videos though.... the Xbone version seems to have a lot of shimmering and random artifacts. It looks outright grainy at times.

Still funny to post.

The idea they must have rushed back to upload the comparison with this! Thinking it was ok

They both look a lot cleaner on my computer, but the darks are silly on the One.

Oh right, I totally forgot it wasn't running at 1080p native. That explains it.

isnt this the botched crushed black video

Yes.

I'd love to get my hands on JackFrags video. As would Eurogamer no doubt.

That's part of the problem with Youtube. It wasn't so bad for current Gen, though still not ideal. But for next gen the quality just isn;t high enough to show it off properly, hence people like Evolution handing footage to Blim to upload with less/better compression.

Speaking of which, wasn't Steven Ter Heide (Killzone SF dev) teasing on Twitter that there would be some 1080p direct-feed HQ footage released soon?

Very curious as to how it compares to this.

That aliasing :(

It's quite disappointing on both versions, but I think it is fairly noticeable the PS4 version suffers a bit less.

Yeah I have noticed. It has become close to impossible to accurately determine the visual quality of a game based on youtube footage. Even if it is in HD.

I'd highly recommend just dumping this on a USB stick and playing it on a PS3.

Looking glorious. And my god at those colours.

I can't stand the wait, I hope it's today.

Can someone post full size PNGs of a few scenes from both files please. Ideally a point with not much movement.

What is going on with the Xbone version. Gamma, contrast, something is not right, are there reference/black level settings with the Xbone? That shit is crushed beyond belief.

Well, I have never seen a Knack video with aliasing issues, but seeing the game live on a demo kiosk, I see aliasing issues.

That is the kind of thing that doesn't come across in compressed videos. Not only are you look at the game on a smaller screen then your TV, your also viewing it in a very small window that is about 40% of your screen. So you look at a 10 inch box, inside a 22 inch monitor, when you will actually play the game on a 40 inch TV.

The differences in those things are staggering. Just like the screenshots here. They look pretty clean when they are in the small box. But click on them and make them full size .. and the ugly appears.

I'm lucky enough to have a beefy enough PC to run BF4 well, so that is where I will likely continue to play it, but the PS4 version holds up well.

I would absolutely pick up a copy of BF4 for PS4 if my stats worked cross platform...

well we can finally, at the very least, squash the notion that DF did something to the PS4 version to make it look bad, and we can finally squash the notion that the high contrast (DF's fault) sharpened (part of the game or scaling process on Xbox One) looks better.

even ignoring the crushed blacks and looking at the things that aren't affected by it, like aliasing... we can definitely agree that the PS4 version doesn't have nearly as obvious shimmering and jaggies, although it is still evident that it isn't running at 1080p.

but!

and a very important but!

even in the crushed blacks 720p sharpened Xbox One footage... it's very clearly beyond last gen. Xbox One footage looks plenty next gen to me, and the PS4 footage looks even better.

fucking web video.

Just copied to PS3 and watched the PS4 footage. Looks absolutely stunning to me, what beautiful looking game (and the single player looks friking AWESOME!).

Finally some quality videos.

The iq and lighting difference is quite appreciable in these vids.

The 'blur' in the X1 video when you're hit looks quite poor/noisy. Lower res for the blur effect itself, or just a by product of the resolution overall?

That aside, the crushing of blacks is hilarious. I couldn't believe in the opening scene how bad it was.

Xboned hahaha its fucking sad how bad that looks, yikes my eyes are cut from those jaggies and I must have my beer glasses on cause I see things blurry.

Why would I fake play the xbox one version, when I can play the PC version on max? And If I want I could use some sweetFX.

For the first time I can say I'm seeing exactly what I need to see. I haven't followed the BF console wars too closely, but it seems every vid I have seen is pretty poor quality/compression etc. I downloaded these and watching them 1:1 on a big screen I can finally appreciate everything. PS4 multiplayer looks crazy. The blur effect I've seen in images and other videos is not apparent here at all. Something that I can also tell is the audio quality is pretty damn amazing. When the gunship is shooting on the guy on the ground and you hear those misses whiz by you it sounds so good. I wasn't even gonna look at this game but after these vids I may give it a shot.

Thank you for these direct feeds. I can definitely say that after playing these videos on my 46" the PS4 version is definitely the one to go for over the XboxOne if I had to choose between the two. As someone already said, looking at Youtube videos and screenshots comparisons does nothing, you HAVE to look at these high quality videos in your own gaming environment conditions.
