Each month, the iOS GAF community hosts a thread for new game releases, rumors and discussion that define the fast-moving world of iOS gaming.

The OP will contain games that released both towards the end of the previous month and games that have released during the current month -- all games which have been highlighted by the GAF community in one way or another. This way you can keep tabs on the best games and at the same time curate an excellent resource to look back on to find games you may have missed.

Also keep an eye out for the ‘GAF iOS Challenges’; events where GAF battle it out on the Game Center leaderboards of a chosen game for both fame and fortune (prizes donated by members of our community).

REALLY impressed with Collosatron, although I felt like I had to buy the intro deal for £2.99 to make any progress, that or grind for weeks.

Great concept though.
Pretty cool game for the price. I like how you can mix up the colours to either make stronger parts or make completely new colours/parts. Fun and quite addictive. Seems to be a fair bit of upgrades to unlock/collect.
[More in the original post]The gameplay is very frantic. It's nothing but nonstop mayhem and weapon fire and explosions. Actually I think that the fact that you don't control the snake helps to streamline and enhance the gameplay. By removing that factor, it allows you to focus on the core puzzle-like mechanic.

Game can be challenging. You can be easily overwhelmed and if you're not actively upgrading your weapons, paying attention to which ones are going to be destroyed, you'll be destroyed quickly, especially during the boss fights. Also the whole nightly news aesthetic is really cool and adds some nice humor and style to the game.

I'll have to play more to better judge the currency situation, but overall I'm pleasantly surprised by how much I'm enjoying Colossatron.

Edit: Here's a better way of thinking about the game. It's not Match-3, but a tower defense game with Match-3 elements. A tower defense game where your towers are mobile and you need to upgrade your towers in real time and position them in the best places to deal with the waves of incoming enemies. Like in TD, some weapon types are better against certain enemies and you want to pair up certain weapons and choose when it's best to upgrade them.

I am enjoying what I've played of Republique so far. Good controls that use smart decisions with your character's AI so that you don't have to overly micromanage a touch screen, good production values, lots of collectibles (though I wouldn't have been able to put in enough kickstarter money to get myself in the game, it's still a cool touch) and I like the concept used to control the game world (and how it uses an upgrade system). Really nice job.
Finally got around to start playing republique.
It does live up to their ambitions so far. Good stuff.

A special guest star appearance by the often elusive Sword & Poker 2 (S&P 1 is available as well but this is the better game). One of the best iOS game cards-mashup-with-other-genre games and it's from 2010! If you like Fairway Solitaire and it's solitaire-golf mashup you'll probably like this one too. It's not updated in retina resolution but you'll find nothing but praise for this one on GAF, get it while it's available, it probably won't be for long!
Everyone buy these! Still on my top5 after all this time, I believe it was my first paid iOS game :)

Been playing The Room Two for a while now, finished 4-5 chapters. I loved the first game, and this is more Room. Looks the same, sounds the same, plays pretty much the same.

One notable difference from the first game though, is that you move around in a room between different objects this time, instead of being locked to one table. Makes it more complex and occasionally a bit harder, in a way that left me somewhat frustrated at times, because they're spreading information to more random places in the room, seemingly just because they can. But really just a nitpick, because the game hasn't been very hard so far.

On the other hand, I really like how they've tried to expand the concept by including more real-life objects into puzzles instead of just plain boxes (although the puzzles involving actual objects have been easier in general IMO, fewer points of interaction so they are easier to figure out). I also appreciate how they've created more distinct themes for all the different rooms, and they really take the spooky atmosphere to new heights in some of the rooms.

Anyway, I like the game a lot. A must-buy if you liked the first one IMO.
But I'm still wondering, is there an actual story going on? I'd like to think there is, but the more notes I read the less coherent it seems. Or maybe I'm just bad at tying clues together. I hope they give me more than just another door at the end at least. :P

I did [purchase it]. Never played it before, so I'm not sure how different the map is, but basically once you tap on the map you get a fullscreen view of the area you are in, then you can pinch to zoom out further and see the entire world. When you first zoom out, the edges of the world first look blurry, then they quickly render up to the full res ala google maps.

I'm playing on the iPad Air, and the game looks pretty good. The cars have high-end reflection shaders that I don't believe were part of the original game. Draw distance is pretty far, and framerate is high for the most part. There are very brief slowdowns every now and then.

The controls are improved over the previous GTA ports, and there are many control options to choose from in terms of targeting, driving, etc. Plus you can customize the buttons however you like (size/location.)

I'm not really into the whole 'gangsta' theme the game has going. I much prefer the Vice City world, but this is still definitely a must buy for any GTA fan.

Finally got to play some of this. I'm really impressed. Game plays smoothly on my iPhone 4 and controls are responsive. There's a ton of depth and replayability in the customization and ship building, and I haven't once felt like I needed to buy IAP coin packs. The boss and enemy designs are very cool and very varied and the gameplay reminds of a more free-form Warning Forever/Infinity Danger, since you can destroy enemies piece by piece and target important parts.

I've been everything from a lightly armored spike covered wrecking ball that threads between bullets to a shielded powerhouse that sacrifices maneuverability for firepower.

Love the little details like your pilot flying through space upon defeat or how lasers bounce around debris

I can see myself sinking a lot of time into this game. Well worth the $1.99
Starborn Anarkist is AWESOME! Controls perfectly, has a great style to it and the physics are superb. Even your own gun can propel you! It takes a minute to get a good handle on everything, but once you wrap your brain around all of the explosions and what all the dots mean it's just gravy.

I played it quite a bit last night, and really enjoyed what I've seen so far. The game looks ace and runs really smooth on the Air, though there is a weird lag in the start menu (non-issue in the game.)

The gameplay is identical to TWD, with dialogue timers, QTEs, basic clue hunting with GIANT MARKERS around interactive objects and all that jazz. Voice acting is good and the story is very intriguing so far. There's lots of weird stuff going on, but it's a nice change from the zombie apocalypse setting. Feels good to just talk to people without worrying about getting ambushed by zombies.

Q - Should I buy this new high-priced game or wait for a sale?
A - Maybe! Just be aware that iOS games have a tendency to go on sale frequently and unpredictably, even recent games can be a dollar rather than premium $4-5. Spend your pack of gum money wisely.
As a recommendation, set up a RSS feed for the price changes on http://appshopper.com/ which will then notify you of any price fluctuations for old and new games alike.

Q - I just got an iPhone/iPad. What are the best games?
A - In addition to checking out the past month's iOS Gaming threads, visit Best iOS Games Ever v1 / Best iOS Games Ever v2 / iOS Hidden Gems. You're welcome.

Q- For gaming, should I get the iPad Mini 2, or iPad Air?
A- Both have their pros and cons. The Mini 2 is cheaper and smaller but there is a slight difference between the Air's A7 chip and the mini's A7: the mini's is around 100MHz slower -- 1.3GHz compared to the Air's 1.4GHz. Other than that they're both identical in spec. It's very much a coin toss between if you want a 9.7" or a 7.9" screen.

Q- I'm a new iOS user, what non-gaming apps should I get ASAP?
A - This thread would be a great place to start. Asking here wouldn't hurt either!

Q - How do I back up my game saves for games that do not support iCloud save games?
A - Use a file manager program such as i-FunBox (PC/Mac) - It's free and requires no jailbreak.
i-FunBox has many different features, but to back up save games you would just want to do the following:

  • Click the iFunBox Classic tab
  • Connect your iOS device, via WiFi or USB, it should then appear in the Connected Devices list on the left side of the UI.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to back up save games for.
  • Select the Documents and Library folders and copy them one at a time to your PC/Mac - this will copy the folders and all their contents. They contains your save files and settings for the game. Some games only use Documents, some use both.
To restore a backed up save game do the reverse.
  • Under User Applications, navigate to the game you want to restore save games for.
  • Select the Documents and/or Library folders and choose to copy from PC/Mac.
  • Navigate to where you saved the backed up Documents and/or Library folders on your PC/Mac, open them and select all the files within it and open them. This will copy the folder contents back onto your iOS device.
  • Restart/fully close the game itself and your saves should be back!
Check that the file structure of the game is retained, e.g. GameName > Documents > files after you're done (no Documents folder within the Documents folder!), otherwise the game will not recognize your restored saves!

Q - How do I hide my Real Name on Game Center?
A - Your real first and last name (taken from your Apple ID) will be shown to your GC friends. If you value that information and want GAF's leaderboards to show your GAF nickname instead, here's how you do it:
  • Go to http://appleid.apple.com and log in with your Apple ID details via "Manage your Apple ID".
  • In the "Name, ID and Email Addresses" section, click Edit on the Your Name field at the top.
  • Change you First and Last name (you must enter both) to whatever you like (e.g. First Name: Tunesmith, Last Name: GAF)
Done, now that's who you're going to be listed as on your friend's Game Center leaderboards. This will affect Game Center *and* your Apple ID. If it's the same account you use for App Store/iTunes, you will still be able to use it for iTunes/App Store's purchases (you can still buy whatever you want like you could before) *BUT* in the receipt it'll show your nickname or whatever you chose as First Name and Last Name when you changed those fields. The first time you will use the modified account on App Store/iTunes, you will be asked to verify the account by re-entering the 3 digits code of the credit card's CCV security code (if you make your purchases using a credit card).

Hmm, thanks. That dropoff sounds worrisome but $400 just seems like so much money for a non-essential supplement tablet.

The hardware in the Retina Mini is 3 generations ahead of the regular Mini. I think it's definitely worth getting.

whaaaaat @ the after years when the fuck did that happen. i just finished the FFIV port the other day and had fun, is it worth it? i was going to just play TWEWY, oceanhorn and maybe the Tactics port for the next month or so but that's tempting me.

edit: okay sounds awful i'll stick to the good games then

Hm, the OP still compares the original iPad Mini to the iPad 4th gen. Probably a good time to update that?

Besides that, looking fantastic as always!

I'm about to go on a 3-Hour Drive can you guys recommend some games in all genres in the Free-$5 range? I have PVZ2, Rayman Jungle run, and Real Racing 3. iPhone 5 if it matters.

Mm, new thread smell. As usual, great job OP.

We really need to get to a new page in this thread. My (old) Mini hates when I check to see if there are new posts and takes forever to load those images!

I'm not to happy with the gaming on my ipad. I'm just baffled on how few games there really are that doesn't look like a mobile game from 1997. I expected more RTS/RPG games on the ipad or PC ports of older games.

Look at the most sold apps, 99% of them are mobile games, not tablet games. Why isnt papers please, binding of isaac, miami hotline, etc indie games more frequent on a tablet? Or older PC rpgs?

Then you have companies making inferior ports based on older ipad, and then newer one doesn't take advantage of new tech.

EDIT: I forgot about all these pathetic tower clones, we have like over 1000 clones of kingdom rush.

Nothing wrong with a GOOD Kingdom Rush clone imo, I love me some TD.

You're asking for a very specific breed of indie games that haven't shown up yet because they're all done by one or two man teams. Chances are that some of these might show up if they can find time/money and a way to make them work in this form (Papers Please and Hotline Miami aren't going to be easy to translate to a touchscreen interface, for instance)

The issue is also more with how Apple curates (note: they don't) the titles you're looking for to make them more visible.

Just off the top of my head: you have RPG and strategy games like Baldurs Gate (with BG2 eventually arriving), Civ, X-Com, KOTOR, a slew of FF and FF Tactics games, and Chrono Trigger. You have indie darlings like Spacechem, Braid, Stealth Inc., and Cook Serve Delicious. You have old school point and clicks like the Monkey Islands and The Last Express.

You even have games that are inventive for the medium at hand, like Device6, Year Walk, Space Team, Ridiculous FIshing,The Room, Gasketball or The Grading Game.

There are so many games to choose from, but you just have to keep an eye out. There are certainly more than enough than to dismiss it by saying they "look like a mobile game from 1997."

Okay. The problem is that there's so many of them.

Yeah, they pretty much all look like that.

Sorry I didn't specify the exact date and which games I was talking about. I will spend a few weeks when I get home to do a proper research on the exact games and which year's they resemble.

Skulls of the Shogun is in the OP, what more do you want from this month? You even have Lords of Waterdeep as well! :p

Okay. The problem is that there's so many of them..

There is (good ones)? I'm not aware of any good ones prior to the few that released just in the last week or so.

Baldurs gate on ipad is a gigantic joke. The idea sounded so good, who wouldn't want a bioware rpg on a tablet? Beamdog have screwed over their customers completly by lying everytime they are suppose to fix the ipad version.

1 year later, we still haven't recieved the 1.2 patch on ipad.

I agree with you on KOTOR,civ,x-com, ff tactics etc great job porting those over to a tablet, and they work great, same with shadowrunner. Yes miami hotline won't be easy due to controls, but papers please?? That game is just a few touches here and there. Why would it be hard to use that game on a tablet?

Also the adventure games on ipad is frigging awesome, problem is that there's not that many of them, which is kinda weird.

Yes I exaggerated a bit, but the point is still clear, the most popular games on app store are in fact clones of other games or mobile games.

Skulls of the Shogun is in the OP, what more do you want from this month? You even have Lords of Waterdeep as well! :p

Also battle of bulge is on sale, another company that did a great job making a superb strategy ww2 game.

What I expected? Planescape torment (not made by scamdog) on ipad :D

This is fair enough, but it's like looking at the movies and being like "Ugh, the only films out there are Transformers, Twilight, and reboots of older films. Why aren't there any REAL movies." Sure, on some level it's true, but there's a wealth of other content out there behind what's popular, and that's what makes any game and media ecosystem worth digging through.

It's kind of similar to people that just view all xbox/ps games as Call of Duty. There are gems for those systems just as there are for this system. Just because more popular things are stealing the spotlight doesn't mean that's all that exists for it.

My OT reactions:

'Woo hoo quoted for my lords of waterdeep impressions'

'Bugger, my impressions are full of spelling mistakes'

:(

Considering the market on iOS we have done pretty well for PC ports, with FTL and Hearthstone both coming early next year along with the title already mentioned. Also the (now pretty good thanks to patches) Space Hulk this week.

BG was always going to be a bit janky, BG2 isn't far off either. Frozen Synapse is there and getting the Red xpac.

iOS people, I have a question! I'm an Android person and I'm really happy with my phone, but I just found a place where I can buy a cheap 5C and I kind of want to see what's the big deal about iPhone gaming compared to Android gaming (I used to have an iPod Touch, but I refused to give mobile gaming a chance until quite recently, lol). Plus I really prefer smaller phones and it seems like iPhone is the only premium small phone these days. Would you say a 5C would be fine with most games? Specs seem somewhat low. Also, are older games compatible with the 4-inch screen iPhones? One of the games I'd buy immediately is Street Fighter IV Volt, but it seems to have gargantuan black bars on current iPhone models... not ideal, but it's compatible at least :P Also, is it possible / easy to buy apps from other countries? Region lock is pretty harsh on Android, there are some Japanese apps I'm dying to buy but it's simply impossible. I'm not sure if it's any different on iOS since I never tried it on my iPod.

Thanks in advance!

We need to talk.
I wasn't impressed by the 2 hours I spent on PC when the game was out...so I missed patches and everything.
I'm still torn on the game and I do not want to useless enlarge my backlog but....
Many review mark the game as a boring garbage, but they are mostly from the same people who don't even bother with games I love, all hyped up by games I do not even consider.

Hype me :P

Well, they fixed the performance issues and added a whole new campaign.

Wait till it's out and see what other people say, or better yet, wait for the Pocket Tactics review, they are pretty good with this type of game.

Yeah I know it will published at midnight, but I can always use some direct impressions from trusty gaffers ;)

As for campaigns, on TA, where there is a dev/community manager, they said they will be priced as the PC ones and they will be cross platform.
The shoulder cam is gone tough...bummer....it was the only thing I liked about the graphics :(

iOS does not region lock, but some titles are locked to a particular countries store. It is easy to make an account for any country, there are tutorials for how to make japanese accounts, and iTunes gift cards are easy enough to get a hold of (Japanese cards are a bit on the expensive side, us cards can usually be found with 10-20% off).
5c is probably good enough for now, the a5 chip in it is used in a bunch of apples products so will probably be supported for a while. Pretty much all games will work on it, I can't think of anything that requires something newer, older games will have black bars on the side, but work fine.

Get both of these if you like speedrun platforming (is that a genre?)! These are great and for me have the best controls on iOS.

I cannot believe that I never gave this game a try, its great. Instantly downloaded the free halloween one and bought Mikey Hooks as well.

That Icycle game is absolutely gorgeous, and worthy of a featured spot in the OT, methinks.

Icycle is GORGEOUS, but I am having major problems with the controls. I got up to level 9 and had to stop, because I kept dying, not from my own ineptitude, but from the slightly floaty controls and the weird physics of the bicycle. For the most part, it's fine, but when things start moving really quickly and you have to make pinpoint turns that's when the problems really show themselves.

Regardless, it's $1.00 and absolutely worth the purchase.

Okay... I finished version 1.0 just fine on the iPad. Some cinematics were missing, but the game was perfectly playable. That was my first time ever playing Baldur's gate too. Can't wait for BG2:EE

5c is probably good enough for now, the a5 chip in it is used in a bunch of apples products so will probably be supported for a while. Pretty much all games will work on it, I can't think of anything that requires something newer, older games will have black bars on the side, but work fine.

The 5c has an A6 chip. It's not low-spec by any means, and will easily last you for years.

For those on the JP side of things, CROSS×BEATS is out today. It's a new music game brought to you by Capcom and long time DDR producer Naoki Maeda. You can see some more info for the game via Famitsu back in September.

Also, there is a free song available for jubeat plus, REFLEC BEAT plus, GITADORA, and pop'n Rhythmin... but it requires you to have all four games installed simultaneously before it'll be offered.

Sorry my mistake, for some reason I was thinking it has the same chip as the iPad 2 and mini. Yeah, the a6 is a fine chip.

Icycle was pretty neat as a flash game a few years back, dream. I may have to pick that up.

I guess I could add Shadowrun Returns to my growing backlog, too? I was looking forward to it, but the PC reviews seemed to fizzle so I put it off.

I bought an Iphone 5s a few months back. First apple device. And, I downloaded the Doom 2 RPG. Holy fuck is this thing boring. Anyone feel the same way? Seemed like a cool idea on paper and I always wanted to try it. Story and dialogue are terrible for an RPG and it's really lacking gameplay wise.

I'm only about halfway through, but it's one of the better games I've played this year.

Was thinking of getting Drive on Moscow but notice Battle of the Bulge is on sale. One better than the other?

They are both great but somehow different games.
They share rules, UI, and the exceptional polish and sleekness (they are imho one of the best examples of how awesome a game could be if built from the ground up on the medium)

Gameplay wise, due to the different map dimension and some key rules, they provide a different experience.

Battle of the Bulge is a more tight experience, feel like playing chess sometimes.
The limited map and very clear target makes you really concentrate on the same spots every game (which turns out very different each time due to the fundamental randomness they have both in turn duration and fights).

Drive on Moscow has a much bigger maps and much more units: this makes many different strategies possibile, and you can even change strategy mid game several times if the odds do not favor you and you are a good gamer (this is something you can't afford in BotB generally).
The campaign is, while retaining the speed of BotB, longer and there are different scenarios already included (something that was added to BotB only post release).

Said that, they are both the PERFECT async games, and this is where both games shine.
You can take your turn in a matter of seconds, and the strategical situation can be seen AT A GLANCE in 1 second...letting you easily have many concurrent games going on.
Do know that, for now, only BotB is universal...Drive on Moscow is iPad only (Universal update is coming).
These games + iPhone....you can say goodbye to any productivity.

For what is worth...I have both and still play both.
Considering you do not have any and one is on sale...I would get Bulge.
If you like Bulge or want a more open ended game...Drive on Moscow will be a no brainer after that.
They have different strengths, Drive on Moscow resembling more a 'full fledged campaign' game (this is not a con for Bulge imho...I love how they concentrated on single war events instead of 'Panzer Generals' ultra long campaign spanning the whole war).

I'm actually midway of Shadowrun Returns.
No problems on iPad Air...I would say a great port.
Graphics are not cutting edge and so far the fights are XCOM light...meaning they are even pretty easy.
To be honest I feel I'm doing the fights just to progress in the story, and there are occasional investigation parts that are cool.

Said that, the story is really damn cool (and I do not even like the fantasy-scifi mix) and really grab be me...I can't wait to play on and see how it develops.

I really recommend the game a lot, but do know I've read there are problems with older devices.

Do know also that there are checkpoints, you can't save anywhere and the game is pretty memory intensive...so if you exit the app a lot opening other programs chances are you have to replay a whole section.
It's not a problem for me, but consider that is quite a problem on a mobile device.
Next expansion, due out in February, will add the 'save anywhere' feature tough.

Ugh. I like Skulls of the Shogun but why, once again, must I play the game in the Phone's default language? Seriously... is providing an option inside some menu so hard?

I don't like this trend either. Even if the game defaults to the device language it should also have an in-game option to change it and keep the setting saved.
