Bravely Default Censored For Western Release
Costumes and ages both altered.

Square Enix has censored parts of the Western release of Bravely Default.

IGN user BangSilverGang posted the below comparison shot on the boards, showing how the developer modified the costumes for the Western version of the game to be less revealing. The shots on the right are from the Japanese version of the game, while the ones on the left are from the Western localisation.

Additionally, the ages of certain characters have been raised from 15 to 18, while localisation efforts have apparently toned down sexual innuendos present in the original game.

None of the changes appear to affect the story or main content of the game other than at surface level. It's also worth noting that these images and changes are from the European version of the game that released last month. While we don't know for certain whether they'll be replicated in the upcoming North American version, the smart money's on that being the case.

Bravely Default is already available in Europe and will launch in North America on February 7. In the meantime, read our review in which we describe it as one of the best JRPGs in recent years, or watch our unboxing of the Collector's Edition, below.

If all the... outfits are modified like they are in the OP, I'm okay with this.

Textual censorship does bother me a bit, though. I love me some double entendre.

Shame but ok.
If I had a choice of costumes for characters in the game I'd pick the covered up versions anyway.

Clever "if old" joke though. :)

I'm generally against censorship, but I'm not terribly bothered by the slight costume change... As long as we still get that super revealing costume for the cute boy character ; )

I'm against censorship but I'm also against the original costumes. (The censored versions are not that better.) What do I do now?

I can understand the age difference outside of Japan, but I don't see the reason to tone back any of the innuendo or costumes.

I actually like those short shorts.

I have no idea what's going on with the bottom costume though for either region. Belts gone wild?

I usually don't like censorship in the slightest when it comes down to the various forms of entertainment, but I actually prefer the costumes on the left.

...recognize that a company making a decision to change something based on feedback, their beliefs about the market, or a combination of the two isn't "censorship"?
The idea is that they shouldn't have designed that in the first place, because it's just silly to have mages run around like that. It's not utilitarian.

I'm going to need you to elaborate on this. So I can make an informed, unbiased opinion.

Yes, that.

Not that I'm particularly a fan of the pedo-rific Japanese outfits, but fuck censorship.

Can't believe we're still putting up with this nonsense in games in 2013.

Well, yeah, that one outfit surely looks a bit too skimpy. I wonder how she even can wear that and be able to battle without it falling off.

that's why they're doing it.

this isn't so much "censorship" as it is re-marketization to make it more appealing to a different market. no one really likes 15 year olds, or sexy ones at that.

Not a fan of censorship but it's not such a big deal here. The character models are not sexy in the slightest. Changing the ages is silly tho.

Altering the dialogue is lame as heck, but I have a feeling that happens a lot just because of cultural differences. I seem to recall hearing that, for example, Persona 4 has some changes in one of the shadow fights.

Still, I wish it didn't happen. I'm sure our sensitive little ears wouldn't be too upset by it.

Changing the costumes doesn't bother me. Considering the art style, they looked pretty awful before. Agnes looks better in the censored version.
