So is Sony no longer in immediate danger of bankruptcy then?

Looks like they made a healthy profit last year.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
Sony may have profited from Q3 - approximately 115 million, the outlook is terrible.

The Japanese tech giant said it anticipates a net loss of ¥110 billion for the full year through March, compared with its previous forecast for a profit of ¥30 billion. That was much worse than an estimate of ¥16.79 billion profit from analysts polled by financial data provider Quick. It was Sony's second downward revision in just three months.

Good results from Game segment nonetheless. Although in the short-term the results are nothing to write home about, in the long-term Sony will most likely be stronger financially going forward.

Kaz finally making the big moves necessary:
Sony sells its VAIO PC business, makes TV arm its own subsidiary
BY MAT SMITH FEBRUARY 6TH, 2014 AT 1:02AM ET

Sony said it was "addressing various options" as recently as yesterday when it came to its VAIO PC and laptop arm, and while announcing its financial results for Q3 2013, it's apparently come to a decision. Amid reforming its TV arm (and splitting it into a stand-alone entity by June 2014), it's going to sell its PC business and VAIO brand to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), with the final deal set to be done by the end of March 2014. The company has reported a drop in demand for its PCs in prior financial statements, and (barring the VAIO Flip 11A), Sony didn't really have much to show from its VAIO range at this year's CES.

The company says it's no longer designing and developing PC products, while manufacturing and sales will wrap up after the company's final VAIO range goes on sale globally. It has decided to focus on those post-PC products (yep, smartphones and tablets), meaning that it had to make some big decisions with less successful parts of the business. During Q3 2013, Sony saw year-on-year sales increases from its mobile arm, but still forecasts an annual loss of around $1.1 billion (110 billion yen) for the full year: it had previously projected a 30 billion yen profit. The blame is leveled at the businesses its now looking to change. Other highlights include the PS4, which sold 4.2 million units and 9.7 million games in its first six weeks. The games arm also saw a "dramatic increase" in PlayStation Plus subscriptions -- something that's mandatory for multiplayer on the company's new console.

Sony will cut a total of 5,000 jobs worldwide (1,500 in Japan) by the end of the 2014 fiscal year, while the new PC company has stated that it will hire around 250 to 300 Sony employees, encompassing design, development manufacturing and sales, and will be based in Nagano -- where Sony's current VAIO HQ resides. The company is promising to fulfill all its aftercare warranties. Sony is signed up to invest 5 percent of the new company's capital to support its launch and smooth over the transition. Restructuring costs across both the TV and PC segments are now set to cost an extra 20 billion yen. Sony is now set to focus on its high-end sets and 4K screens, and hopes that changes will ensure the TV business returns to profitability within the next financial year.

Well at least this year we can figure out that it was approximately 3.6 PS3 and 4.2 PS4
Unless there is a magical way to ship in 1 day the units produced in late December then the most probable is that Sony shipped at least 4.4m PS4 in 2013 (200k units reached the stores in January)..,. I guess that's the minimum.

Kaz seems to be doing what needs to be done to save the greater Sony. Hope his efforts pay off, he deserves it.

I'm sure we'll still get Vaios, just not from Sony.

Are their tablets selling well? How much markets share do they have in that arena?

yeah if they continue to come and be the same build quality I will buy em. Both vaio and asus laptops are awesome

I want to see their reasoning behind the forecast adjustment. That's a significant loss

Finally dumped the PC business which only a select few should even both with at this point. I think that these days, either make enthusiast (Gamer) PC's or hardware that is going to be sold in mass to companies. High end PC's for normal consumers isn't something Sony will no longer have to bother with.

Not surprised the Vaio division is being sold off but I think it's a pity they're selling the Vaio brand as well. I really think they could've rebranded their tablets with it and helped them stand out (so you'd have the Xperia Z line for phones and the Vaio Z line for tablets).

You do realize that Sony already makes a Xperia Z Android tablet?

Of course I do, that was my bloody point. Xperia Tablet Z is a shitty name.

Argh!!! Goddam consolidation of numbers. But hey, if anything they are consistent, in success and failure.

Why do you care? Were you expecting them to announce January numbers in their Oct-Dec quarter? We already know how many PS4s they sold last year.

Smart decisions there. I also think they should spin off their Mobile phone and tablet business.

You do realize that the mobile division is successful for Sony, right? Sony sells the most Smartphones in the world outside of Apple & Samsung.

oh reading the notes the forecast is explained...a huge set of impairment charges are at play

32.1 Billion impairment charge to the battery business
8.2 Billion impairment charge to the pc business

there's also a write off for PC software in the gaming segment for 6.2 Billion (SOE stuff)

all in yen

"Xperia" is the name of Sony's line of Android devices. Just like "Galaxy" is the name of Samsung's line of Android devices. So an Android Tablet from Sony is gonna be called Xperia.
