Week of February 10th to the 16th, 2014.

Fighting Games Weekly is the weekly discussion thread for all things fighting games. News, events, streams, videos, players, drama, everything fighting game related.

Don't know what to watch right now? Check the FGCPros Twitch Group or Jaxel's Stream Viewer. If you want to watch multiple streams at once, you can use Jaxel's customizable multiviewer as well.

New to FGC-GAF is the FGC-GAF Index which lists the fighting games GAFers plays as a neat reference with some rough statistics to boot. To add yourself to the index, quote this post and use the survey link below. Please remember to save/bookmark the "Edit your response" link so you can edit your responses if/when you buy a game already on the list or a new game that releases in the future.

Last week's thread. An archive of previous FGW threads is available here.

Every week, FGW will spotlight one GAFer to get a better picture of their history with fighting games, their preferences, and much more. For this week's FGW Player Spotlight, we will be taking a closer look at oneida!

What fighting games do you currently play, what are your all time favourites and why?
I actively compete in Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown. I'll be at SoCal Regionals next month, and SEGA Cup 2014 in April. Previously I have competed in Super Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 at local tournaments at Game Underground in Framingham, MA.

My all time favorites are Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution and Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown.
What are your favorite mechanics from the current selection of fighting games and why? What are your least favorite and why?
Baroque from Tatsunoko vs. Capcom presents an interesting dynamic of risk/reward to that game. I like to think of health/super meter/frame advantage as kinds of currencies in fighting games - it's fairly obvious how super meter and frame advantage can be conceptualized as a kind of currency, but few fighting games utilize health as a "currency" in as transparent a manner as TvC. I always thought that was so cool.

If TvC is too old to be "current", then fuzzy guard in VF5FS because it's like dancing.
What got you into fighting games? Are there any other genre of games you play?
Believe it or not, World of Warcraft got me into fighting games. There was a point shortly after Lich King dropped that it dawned on me that all the time I had spent with Burning Crusade was utterly meaningless - all the 40 man raids, all the dailies, everything, the only tangible reward was the gear. And after Lich came out, all that gear was worthless.

It just so happened that Street Fighter IV came out like three weeks after I gave up on WoW. There was this gap that the old time sink once held, so I replaced it with a game whose reward for persistence couldn't expire: the hundreds and hundreds of hours I've spent with Street Fighter IV eased my transition into TvC, MvC3, KoFXIII, P4A, and VF.
What is your favorite fighting game character and why?
Magneto is too fucking cool in every VS game. Runner up: Polimar.
Describe your style of play, and how do you play (local, online, etc.).
For the past 5 months I've been attending an offline gathering every Saturday. Before moving here, I used to play online a lot more, but fuck that shit, especially with a game like VF it just encourages bad habits.
Style of play vvv
What do you feel are your biggest strengths and weaknesses as a player?
I play defensively to a fault and give too much respect to my opponents, going for throw setups before "earning" them a lot of the time. When I make a mistake I can get frustrated and caught up in it. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdLyRdOenTE&t=1549 as I drop a combo that would've won me the round and instead of getting over it and maintaining my life lead, I let it get the best of me.
Best and worst moments in the your fighting game career?
B: I placed 9th at NYG8.
W: I went 0-2 at SEGA Cup 2013.
What do you want from future fighting games
Who should be on next week's GAF Player Spotlight?

Good spotlight, Oneida. The point you made about WoW is a very interesting one because I kinda felt the same when I quit. I decided that grinding mechanics in games are garbage, and they are often used in somewhat devious ways to keep players interested. Now I just facepalm whenever I see games using grinding or other "carrot on a stick" mechanics to keep players interested.

What interests me about it is that the biggest wall new players face - and it's one that turns A LOT of people away - is that losing sucks. In WoW you start out with shitty gear, but your opponents are Lv 1 too. The reward for loyalty in fighting games is you "die" less. I don't know, I wonder if there's a better way of going about it.

Does he have a teleport?

If so that would complete the top tier trifecta of sword normals, trenchcoat and teleporter.

oh it's gonna be one of those threads

My fightpad isn't registering certain inputs (speficially db and uf) so I think I'm gonna have to get a replacement

top tier status: looking good

Doubt this is coming over here, but from what I've seen it looks good. Weird mishmash of SEGA shit though. Is there any footage of Akira yet?

Ya, people are definitely averse to steep learning curves. Many gamers view dying in a game, whether it be a fighting game or platformer, as a bad thing and sometimes take it personally. Actually, I think some game designers intentionally make their games easy because they are afraid players will give up and not experience their game as a whole. Dying in a game should be viewed as a signal to the player that they aren't doing something correctly, and they must learn to overcome the obstacle.

Maybe gamers just aren't as persistent as they used to be 20 years ago, but then again Dark Souls seems really popular. So, I dunno.
