Help me pick my first soccer game!

Should I go with FIFA or PES?
Never played a soccer game seriously for more than 2 minutes before, but I'm feeling like a sports game, I've been missing Virtua Tennis 2 and I thought I might as well try something different and go with a team sport. Soccer games seem to be largely regarded as the best in the genre, so... here we are!

Gaf?

FIFA, preferably the PS4 and Xbox One versions.

You should try playing the demo first, it's enough to get a good taste for the game.

What format?

C64 - Microprose Soccer
Amiga - Kick Off 2
GBA/DS - Steven Gerrard's Total Soccer
SNES - International Superstar Soccer Deluxe
N64 - International Superstar Soccer 98
PS1 - International Superstar Soccer Pro Evo 2
PS2 - PES4 or PES5
PS3/PSP/Vita - Super Sidekicks
360 - PES6 or Sensible Soccer
GC - Mario Strikers
Wii/WiiU - Mario Strikers Charged

I've played FIFA since its Megadrive début, and never found it fun. PES was always the better get (by better, I mean more enjoyable), but I have lost interest in it after the last couple of iterations were disappointed. More arcade-y soccer games are a fuck load more fun than ponderous ones like FIFA.

The last life consuming PES game I played was PES6 on the 360.

Don't play either. That's my advice. FIFA is infuriating and feels fixed at the best of times. Plus, you'll eventually figure out how to exploit the CPU and it becomes even less fun than. Online games will make you pull your hair out.

If it's your first one, try one of the older versions of FIFA 08 or 09. You don't need all the bells and whistles yet and you can get them for cheap. If you like Virtua Tennis I'm thinking you'd rather not get too technical with your first soccer game (for now at least).

This is the only soccer game I have ever played.

What? The gameplay is significantly better on next-gen.

Significantly better is a bit of stretch. The pace might be a little slower and there are some nice new animations here and there but it's still basically the same as the 360 and PS3 versions. More importantly, it still has the same major problems as those versions like OP lofted through balls and headers.

Depends on what systems you have..

Winning Eleven, Mario Strikers and the newly released (in the US) Inazuma Eleven for the 3DS are good options, and different enough.

FIFA 14 is the most suitable choice at the moment. PES kind of lost its magic over the last couple of years . Hopefully this year we can see much better releases from both teams.

First soccer game? Gotta be FIFA, man. Just remember to spam lobbed through passes in your midfield and spam finesse shots in the box. You'll have the time of your life.

The last Pro Evo was fucking amazing (well the demo). Didn't buy it because it's last gen only but it shat all over Fifa.

Start from any of these
SNES: International Superstar Soccer/Deluxe
N64: International Superstar Soccer 64/98/2000
PS1: ISS Pro Evolution
GCN: World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 Final Evolution
PS2: Pro Evolution Soccer 5/6
Wii: Pro Evolution Soccer 2008-2013 (Special playmaker wii controls. One of the more unique sport games out there.)
PC: Pro Evolution Soccer 5/6/2011-2014
World Soccer Winning Eleven 10: Liveware Evolution
PS360: Pro Evolution Soccer 2011-2014
2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

It's gaf... If I said football half the answers would be about dumb handegg games. Lesser of two evils, calling it soccer.

Homie you gotta believe me, FIFA is perfect for your first soccer game. You press 2 buttons and win.

Come on, man.

Grab the Amiga emulator and a copy of Kick Off 2. It really doesn't get any better to be honest with you.

Yeah. Fuck Sensi. Just a clone of Kick Off.

Kick Off 2 was pretty much the peak of twitch, arcade footy action. Quite possibly my all time most played game. Despite the Amiga having a staggeringly deep library of games, my KO2 disk was almost permanently inserted.

It's hard as hell to play these days. Especially on a pad, rather than a clunky joystick (Cruiser or GTFO). But I will always love it.

I can't believe that there isn't a glut of similar top-down footy games on Live/PSN/eShop. I would buy the shit out of every single one.

The last PES was terrible, it made me stopped playing it completely.
They made heavy changes to the graphics engine, thus put little effort into every other part of the game. If you play it on consoles, oh boy, prepare for tear lines everywhere, it runs terrible on last gen consoles. The input lag... the input lag will make you tear your hair out...

I would recommend PES2013 or FIFA 14.

...or like someone mentioned it earlier, get a copy of PES6.

its football and the qnswer is Nintendo World Cup

this was actually the first video game I ever owned, together with the 4 player adapter and 4 controllers for my nes. playing with 4 people in 1990 was fucking awsome.
(it's also the best football game I ever played, mostly because it's about having fun and what could be more fun than knocking out other players by shooting them really hard with the ball).

If you're playing on your own and want real teams or playing with friends who want either A) an easy time with no learning curve or B) Won't be caught dead with Mario? FIFA.

Want to manage real teams, and don't mind not playing the games for an amazing management sim? Football Manager

The actual best football game? Mario Strikers Charged for Wii. It's actually quite a challenging game to beat, and seriously fun.
