About the original:
o.jpg

Outcast is an action-adventure game developed by Appeal, published by Infogrames and was released in 1999 for PC. It's one of the best games released ahead of its time. As one of the first games, you had a rich, fully explorable 3D world, including cities with lots and lots of characters, who were fully voiced.

Let me tell you, people that played that game in 1999 (and beyond), including me, were just blown away by this game's atmosphere, characters and world. It was nothing short but breathtaking. I have yet to see another game where exploration was so rewarding and so much fun. One of the best games and one of the best to get a HD remake. If you even just mildly interested, help this kickstarter to get to its goal.

Plot:
In 2007, the U.S. government successfully sends a probe to an alien world in a parallel universe. The probe starts transmitting video images of the world back to Earth. Then, just minutes into the mission, an alien life form discovers the probe and damages it, causing an unforeseen backlash of energy to create a black hole threatening Earth. After being briefed on the situation by his old friend Major Vernon, former U.S. Navy SEAL Cutter Slade is given the job of escorting three scientists (William Kauffmann, Anthony Xue and Marion Wolfe) on a mission to this alien world to recover the probe and close the black hole. Arriving in this alien world, Cutter is separated from the other scientists and is hailed by the natives as their messiah, the Ulukai.

Reposting my comments from the rumour thread:

Intrigued, having not played the original (I know, I know, it's in my GoG library as we speak). One thing is setting off some small alarm bells, though - there's four different statuettes available from various tiers (Cutter alone, Cutter with Gorgor, Cutter riding Twon-Ha, Large Cutter head and torso) which seems a bit expensive to produce in small numbers (particularly because the Gorgor one apparently only appears in one tier). That leads me to worrying that they may not have thought through budgeting for the rewards.

I may well be incorrect, but it's something that leads me to wariness.

Also, their Lead Environment Artist appears to be Derren Brown.

$1,350,000 for console versions? It sucks but I'm not sure they will get anywhere close to that. If it gets funded I hope they still plan console versions even if they don't meet that stretch goal.

I think I am going to do some unofficial PR for this, just because the original was such a underrated masterpiece.

Ninja Scooter: Outcast is a pretty massive game though. I don't think making an HD remake would be a small undertaking. The game had a lot of mechanics and a pretty damn meaty campaign.

Too bad there's not even a mock-up of how it would look.

Also, why are they using songs from Dustforce in their trailer (e.g., at the 2:05 mark)?

Is Terence involved in this? (I didn't think so after reading their post but I might have skipped something)

EDIT: Well at the end of the video I could see like 2 seconds of footage showing an Island with a temple.

There is a pan of the water world in the vid which gives an [early] impression of how it will look.

True. I don't doubt they need that much, I just wonder if they can raise enough. KS funding seems really tough for people without established names or IPs. Hope they make it though.

X-Post from the old thread:

Just a quick reminder that DAOKA is the company that made Fighters Within for Xbone. So maybe just don't put too much hype in the reboot...

Also I'm still not understanding the corporate structure. Sometimes they are referencing themselfs as Daoka, sometimes as Fresh3D. I'll hold my money tight till I see some footage...

added the trailer. I don't want too much focus on the original since it's about the new remake. It's on page 1 anyway. I'm sure people will see it.

Hope we'll get new screenshots and video footage of the remake soon.

Can someone who made a pledge ask if they'll add paypal? Can't pledge otherwise. :/

Haven't heard of this game before. Is it really that famous?

Where I come from, that is the norm. I can switch it if you want me to.

How do you guys designate units that is less than 1? As in 1,000.005 meters. It becomes 1.000.005 and you get a million and 5 meters instead. 1.000,005? Just curious

Well, to be fair they had quite a task ahead of them. Has anybody made a decent kinect game? Well, I am sure there have been a few. Caution is good, but I do feel that Outcast was that good. I can't think of single kickstarter that I would take over this.

Harpuea: Haven't heard of this game before. Is it really that famous?

I am not sure if I would say famous, but in 25 odd years of gaming, it is easily one my top 5 favourite games. It was incredible for its time. Check the vids I have posted. Soundtrack is still some of the best.

1.000,05 is correct.

Some people also use the upper comma 1.000'05.

Backed. Original is so freaking good, game was so far ahead of it's time.

One of the greatest soundtracks ever too.

This looks interesting. Are there any games that this is similar to that have been released recently? I want to pledge, but don't know much about it.

None really that I can think of to be honest. It was an open world action RPG where you could play first or third person, and complete the main story in any order. For the record, I was much more impressed with it when it released that I have been playing stuff like Skyrim or Mass Effect. Actually, it may have some commonalities with ME although it was much less linear. A much better game overall as well.

The four aspects of this game that really stood out at the time (1999) were: spectacular visuals in a cohesive open world; beautiful score performed by the Moscow Philaharmonic (?); diverse gameplay mechanics, you could switch between first and third person, use sniper rifles, platform, puzzles, ride a dinosaur; good main plot that could be completed in any order except from the end game

Sounds cool. I'll start spreading the word. I would prefer to play on consoles, but I'm not sure that is a realistic goal.

I've heard nothing but good thing about this title but never got around to buying it. Now the remake is inevitable, I will make great reservations for this title.

Side-note: OP using WebM is a great way to start the thread. This is a good way to get real authentic hype.

yeah, I want to play this on PS4, since I don't play PCs anymore. Considering some of the games that have reached there goals, I hope this can make it. The only other game I have backed is Kingdom Come, and while that looks awesome, I want this game a whole lot more.

It's basically a few guys that worked on the original. Their paths crossed many times in their careers, and here they are working together once again.
No clue about the studio name either, I suppose Fresh took over the project as it is an already established studio.

Kickstarter page lacks visual for sure, but the team's no amateurs. Working professionals for years, they know what they're doing.

HD Remake? OH SHIT!! Still have the original and one of my favorite games of all time. Gonna back this for sure!

And backed!

Adelpha looks amazing that snippet take all my monies!

OP, I think you should put a sub-heading on the Title. Like 'Reboot of one of the best games of all-time'. Something shorter maybe. This is a big deal, this game should have had a wider appeal, and I think it could today.

Backed in a heartbeat. Can't wait to see Ulukai in HD.

And the OST? Just beautiful. By Lenny Moore and performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and choir. The fanfare when Ulukai was fighting was just exhilarating.

Ranzaar World of Snow

Look I love Outcast but they'll be struggling to get 300K, I am guessing. This is just too niche...nobody really knows Outcast anymore and the game wasn't even insanely popular back then.

Let's keep this ball rolling then! Raise awareness. I'm sure they'll have a Rockpapershotgun article, but use twitter of facebook or whatever you use as social interaction to spread the word! This really needs to happen.

Holy Shit, this is my favourite underrated game.

Backing this right now, will be very sad if it doesn't make it. Given how poorly the original sold, I don't see this getting far. :(

Nice. Real nice.

Never beat the original, but I remember being really into it at the time (way back in 2000 AD). Hopefully this gets backed so I can give the game another shot...in glorious HD!!

Nice to see another classic get this type of treatment due to publishers opening up their coffers. hope to see more in the future.
