With patches and patience, Gothic 1 Remake could become essential. Right now, it is a promising and frustrating experience in roughly equal measure.

Gothic Remake delivers a very specific kind of RPG experience with conviction, but not without clear friction. On one hand, its identity is extremely strong: the progression system is rewarding once it clicks, the faction structure meaningfully shapes how you experience the world, and the sense of learning the colony through struggle is something few modern RPGs attempt at this scale anymore. But on the other hand, that same identity comes with trade-offs that are hard to ignore. The early hours can be so punishing that they risk pushing players away before the systems properly open up. Technical issues like crashes and bugs also interrupt what is already a demanding experience. Add to that the repetition in quest structure and moments of pacing slowdown, and you get a game that can feel uneven. It's a game that absolutely knows what it wants to be, whether that's a strength or a barrier depends entirely on how much friction players are willing to accept in exchange for its highs.

Could Gothic Remake be better? Of course. Fortunately, it turned out to be just good enough and I genuinely hope to see a remake of the next installment as well, because the developers at Alkimia Interactive have convinced me that they're up to the task. By the time you're listening to this review, I'm probably already playing through it again, this time joining a different camp. So all that's left for me to do is recommend a visit to the Valley of Mines, more beautiful than ever before.

The Gothic 1 remake is exactly what fans were hoping for: a technical overhaul that never loses its gritty character. I had an absolute blast playing this brutal game. It requires patience—you have to save often, proceed with caution, and rely on tactics to get through it—but the reward is a wonderful role-playing experience.

PlayStation Universe - Miles Penrith - 6.5 / 10

The PS5 version of Gothic 1 Remake is held back by performance woes, but underneath this lies an iconic RPG with deeply immersive gameplay. For new players, it's hard to recommend the PS5 version in its current state, whereas fans who can look past the graphics and 30 FPS limit may find appreciation in this blast from the past.

The GameSlayer - Sam Smith - 8 / 10

The Gothic 1 Remake is exactly what we hoped it would be, a modernized take on an uncompromising classic that does exactly what the original did, just on modern hardware with some extras thrown in to delight long-time fans. This is the game that inspired many of the RPGs that we know and love today, so those who enjoy games like The Witcher owe it to themselves to try this experience - and stick with it to be truly rewarded.

The Gothic 1 Remake is a testament of how you should approach remakes of classics. Treating them with respect and modernize them for a new generation to play. For newcomers to the series and veterans alike, Gothic 1 Remake is a worthy comeback.
