I am not sure if this type of thread is frowned upon or not, so please lock and block if it isn't, but it has saddened me greatly. Not because I knew the man(my wife is friends with his mother and it has affected her a good deal too), but because it is just so god damned senseless. A life lost over a $400 machine.

Young and skinny of it is that he put it up for sale on Craigslist, met the buyers in the parking lot, buyers attempted to steal, struggle ensued, gun was shot, bullet goes through the shooter's hand and strikes the victim fatally in the chest, a baby was in the back seat. Police find the murderers in a hospital where they are having the injured hand looked at.

Hope these two end up in jail for life.

#1 rule of craigslist: Do the trade in a public place surrounded by people.

#1 rule of a robbery: Don't fight the person or try to be a hero - there is a good chance of injury/of being killed. Let the 400$ ps4 go and call the police.

You do something like this in the most public place possible, like inside a mall.

But that doesn't excuse what these scumbags did. Fuck 'em and hopefully they'll get theirs soon enough.

I have used Craigslist so many times I can't count. This is scary and very much an eye opener.

Thats terrible. I can't imagine what kind of pathetic existence it would be to equate a $400 gaming machine to a human life.

1.) I'm sorry about your friend dying so senselessly.

2.) Yeah, Craiglist. I know people want to avoid Ebay/Paypal, but I just don't think its worth the risk most of the time. Only time I would ever use Craiglist is if money isn't involved (and in some cases, not even then) - you have zero protections otherwise (not that Ebay/Paypal give you that much protection, particularly if you're the seller).

edit: Man, that video by his friend. ;__;

Damn thats sad. I just sold a 3ds and a wii u on craigslist. The parking lot wasnt enough for me i had them meet me in the store (Target)

The police won't do much I'm sorry to say

Well there are a few things the guy did wrong.

1. Never meet at night, for obvious reasons

2. Only meet in the most public (and crowded) places you can think of. I usually sell games at a local gas station that usually has at least 20 people within 50ft at all times. Or a grocery store (inside)

If the person you are talking to insists on meeting somewhere else, like at their house, you immediately stop talking to them. End of story.

I've been on Craigslist non stop trying to buy a used car. There are some incredibly sketchy people on there. Some will post nice looking cars on the lower end of their KBB listing and then if you call them up they will say to bring all the cash with you since they want serious buyers only. I swear they're waiting for someone to walk up with thousands of dollars and then rob them.

Ive met in a food court during busy hours. Weekend when theres lots of people around is ideal. If you cant do that I dont want your money.

I was going to sell a coachella wristband last year to some guy. Everything was going perfectly until he said "meet me at my apartment like around 11 pm" I mapped the directions and it was in a horrible part of downtown LA that I'm pretty sure is just housing for people living on skid row

That is depressing! My condolences. This is why I try to use other means to sell stuff. Craigslist is just too risky. I always try to meet people during the day and near the entrance of a major/busy store.

Why not do the trade at a bank or someplace more public? Someone won't meet there, then screw them.

That's terrible about the kid.

^This.

I have done a few sales on Kijiji (similar to Craigslist but for Canada >.>)

Always meet in a public area - preferably a place with lots and lots of people - always bring someone with you.
So two of you die instead of just you. >.>

I bought a phone off of a Craigslist listing once. It felt sketchy leading up to it, especially where they wanted to meet. I insisted on it being at this specific gas station that is on the corner or two very busy streets and about half a block from the police station. It wasn't until I was ready to walk away that he agreed to meet. When I showed up, there was four guys, and they were trying to convince me to go with them to see "what else they had." Eff that.

After I bought the phone (with cash I didn't bring, I used the ATM in the gas station), they still kept trying to convince me to go with them. When I got in my car, they followed me for a bit, even after I made some deliberately weird turns, including a U-turn. I eventually drove back to the police station by the gas station and waited in the parking lot until they left. I'm about 99% sure they were hoping to steal the phone back.

Wow. That would have scared me senseless. Smart thinking though.

Easy to say, But I'm sure in the heat of the moment mindset is all fucked up.

I've done a ton of Craigslist deals, Never do them early morning (less people around) or after dark no matter the neighborhood. Anything worth more I usually set up the meet in the parking lot of a local police dept. I've had plenty of people cancel the deal when i give them the location.

Yeah, my wife used to do a lot of CL trading. She'd suddenly have furniture or something would go missing and she said "oh, yeah, by the way, I traded that on craigslist". I would lose my shit with her for that. She thought I was upset about the expense until one of her online friends got robbed and almost sexually assaulted (would have been if she wasn't able to get away) and then it finally clicked with her why I kept telling her that if she was going to do that, I needed to go with her.

She only did it a few times after that because she really doesn't like me carrying a pistol, but I keep telling her there's simply no way I'm doing that unarmed. You want to go to someone's rape house or meet them in some Fiesta parking lot at the back of their rape van, then you're going to deal with me being hyper-vigilant.

Again, fuck Craiglist.

Yeah, please, if any of you are in a robbery situation, just let them have it and deal with it afterwards. No possession is worth your life.

What exactly are you guys selling that you could not safely do via an online delivery vendor? Is this stuff hot(stolen)?

Craigslist is very useful but you have to be smart about it. Always meet in a public place. Parking lot no way man.

I don't really sell or buy things on Craigslist, I use it to get hired for freelance work, so it can be safer in general, but you still need to be aware.

For my wife, it was used (therefore cheap) furniture. Also did the same thing for cats that needed a good home.

I've sold literally 500+ things on craigslist, it went great till about a year or so ago some guy tried to buy a vita off of me with fake 100 dollar bills. I took a good look and knew they were fake and told him to give me the vita back. He denied then being fake but then likely saw how angry I was getting and gave me back the vita and drove off.

That could have been a much worse situation, and I am glad I didn't drive after him to hurt him. Ever since then, I haven't been able to use craigslist to sell stuff like I used to. I have tons of stuff I need to get rid of but just can't shake off the feeling of anger from that incident. I still use it all the time to buy stuff, but I always speak on the phone first.

What do you mean by "online delivery vendor"? Ebay, amazon?

Either take around 15% - 20% of the transaction amount in costs not to mention shipping. I don't think craiglist is worth it but I understand why it exists

I feel like this should be SOP for any Craiglist deal, regardless of price.

Seems silly to blame this on craigslist, I think its more about where you live I meet people all the time. Never had an issue.

Very sad to hear.

If I sell anything else through Craigslist, I'm doing it right in front of the police station.

Makes me second guess whether I should meet the person I plan on selling my iPhone 5 to in the next couple of days....
