Galaxy Trucker: Best Digital Board Game of ALL TIME.

AstroLad

Hail to the KING baby
Galaxy_Trucker_board_game.jpg

We have a thread for digital board games, a thread for regular board games, and a thread for iOS games, but I thought that this game really deserved a special callout because it represents the best digital conversion on any platform.

What makes it so special? Well, don't make me do all the work. I'm too busy playing the game for all that. But thankfully professionals are on the case.

Trailer Video

Galaxy Trucker is really two games in one. In the first part, players will build a spacecraft of junk parts, trying to prepare it as best they can for the dangers present on the upcoming flight. The second half of the game is the flight itself, where all manner of terrors will wreak havoc with even the best-designed ship.
....
The ship-building portion of the game on the iPad works fantastically well. There are two different methods of ship building: real-time and turn-based. Real-time ship building is identical to the tabletop version. There is a pile of chits lying face down on the table, where you can select a token and see if it is something you want to add to your ship. You can reject tiles and put them back into the public pile, or you can add them to your growing ship, but once you do that it’s permanently attached. In the pile, you’ll find parts like extra crew cabins, cargo holds, laser cannons, engines, shield generators — all with different connectors, that don’t always fit together. As you’re building and revealing tiles, your opponents are doing the same, so you constantly have to be on the lookout for parts you may need suddenly being thrown atop the pile of hidden parts.
....
As events happen, the players’ ships are animated, playing out the events as they happen. Attacked by smugglers? Watch the laser cannons fire and see the baddies come onto your ship and haul away your cargo. Meteor storm? Here come the meteors smashing into, and breaking away, half of your ship. Abandoned ship? Watch your little astronauts head over to captain the new ship home for scrap. While the flight is really just a simple race mechanism, adding all this fluff really makes Galaxy Trucker pop on your iPad. None of it was necessary, and the 2D-into-3D effect is initially a little weird, but it really makes the game come to life.

So far, I’ve only been talking about the gameplay itself, which is brilliant on iPad. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The game comes with a lengthy single-player campaign that you’d expect from an RPG and not a silly board game conversion. The map is made of planets and asteroids, each with its own quests and routes. You’re free to fly the routes you want instead of being railroaded down a certain story path, and each route offers its own unique rules and dangers. I really can’t express how incredible the campaign truly is. I’ve played around 15 hours, and I still haven’t revealed half of the map yet.
....
Galaxy Trucker game offers a lengthy and brilliant tutorial for those just getting into the space trucking business, and has a rulebook (Yardmaster, I hope you’re taking notes) that was built from the ground up for the digital version. Also, each card can be expanded and the rules for that event are displayed on the screen during the game. No need to leave a game and check out the rulebook.
....
Galaxy Trucker isn’t a game for everyone. People looking for a sober and realistic space game will hate its light-hearted tone. People who only play games to win will hate it. Perfectionists who can’t stand to watch their creations explode will hate it. You shouldn’t hang out with these people. These are bad people who are just wrong because Galaxy Trucker is too good not to love. Honestly, I can’t find any flaws with the game, and can see myself playing it for years. Galaxy Trucker isn’t merely the best board game on iPad this year, it’s the best board game on iPad ever.
Pocket Tactics (5/5)

Galaxy Trucker is a game of stories, it is a game of laughing at others’ misfortunes and screaming at your own demise. It is a highly social game, one that may appear impossible to recreate digitally. That is the magical part of this port, CGE has managed to bring this experience to our iPads (also Android and iPhone soon), not just through online multiplayer but throughout the entire experience.
....
All of these features are packaged in what feels like the board game art come to life. The ships animate as they go down to planets, asteroids and lasers actually strike your ship, shields burst to life, and more. While still true to the board game, they have made it truly a video game experience. The UI and interface are easy to use and surprisingly intuitive. The included tutorial doesn’t just teach gameplay, but also walks you through app controls, which is great for new and experienced players (also the tutorial is quite funny, so I would check it out even if you are a pro).

Galaxy Trucker is the standout iOS board game of the year, so far. It hits all the right notes and provides hours and hours of gameplay. This is truly a board game turned into a video game, not merely a port. Each mode of play is deliberate and well thought out. This is not one to be missed.
BoardGameGeek (5/5)

Basically the board game itself is a classic, and the app is a fantastic experience for anyone who enjoys board games or even just puzzly games with a healthy dose of chaos. Rare for digital board games, the single-player mode is quite deep and excellent, though live multiplayer really recreates the board-game experience shockingly well. Get it!

How is the gameplay with multiple people on a single tablet? Would you recommend it, or is it painful?

Local multi uses the new turn-based action-point system, so no worries about crowding around a device. People seem to really like the new system, and it's implemented in parts of the campaign as well as an option for online multi.

Galaxy Trucker (actually, pretty much all Vlaada Chvatil games) really does benefit from a digital version. His games have a ton of pieces, a ton of moving parts, and a ton of chrome. Doesn't make them bad games. Some of his games (Dungeon Petz and GT shoutout!) are some of my favorites. But they can feel really clunky for the uninitiated. Digital makes it way easier to "get" what's going on with the game.

Also, OP is incorrect. Neuroshima Hex is best digital boardgame of all time. :)

I was just looking at this in board game format in a game store this weekend. I'd have to wait for an Android version anyway, but AstroLad, would you rather play this in board game form or in tablet form?

Depends on how often you'll be able to play it. I own and love the board game, but as mentioned above it's got quite a bit of setup and cleanup to it, and given the complexity level (I'd call it a heavy mediumweight) and playtime I rarely get to play it IRL. So for me I think the app does wonders.

Hmmm, good point. I didn't realize the game had so much setup. I have a tough enough time getting people to play simpler games.

I'm going to have to wait for the iPhone version and hope the interface is ok.
I coped with Le Havre so I should be fine :p
I'm excited though.

ctrl+f'ed on that pocket tactics review page, seems like no plans for android? :(

i was thinking that too checking PT, but Astro said they are, and someone else in the async thread said by the end of the year.

so i dont have to be jealous! of this game anyways. looking forward to playing it!

will it be cross platform online though?

Looking good:

Is Galaxy Trucker also coming to Android?
Yes! We are developing and testing the app on multi-platform. However, some minor tweaking for Android is necessary - we will start right after the iOS version is released. The release date for Android will be announced when we are ready to roll.

It's a great implementation of a fun game. I've only played the single player stuff so far but it is quite fun and challenging. It's supposedly only $5 for the first two weeks, in case people are on the fence.

I concurr with the OP's suggestion entirely - the UI just fits all the elements together. And the campaign mode is staggeringly well done - with the addition of mission-specific tiles, rules, limitations, and what not. Easily the best boardgame digital-adaptation yet.

Can't wait for it to hit iPhones.

The best digital "board" game is still Dokapon Kingdom.
That is the Diplomacy of digital board games in the sense it makes you hate all the other players.

I'd say something more akin to Itadaki Street/Fortune Street/Boom Street is what I think of when I think digital board game, especially as you can ride on the success of others. It does need some slight speed improvements though and being up to 4 players is a bit of a limitation (then trying to play Monopoly with more than that is pretty chaotic). Then again I can see it not being as well grounded as a physical board game.

So like I said in the iOS thread just before it got locked for the October version - I need this.

I don't even have an iPad, though, so I will need one of those first. Guess I will wait until the end of the month to see what the supposed new hardware reveals bring.

Man, I had no idea this was even a thing and now I want it right now.

Almost considered skipping work just to escort this incompetent guy through an astroid field. Why dosen't he add an engine to his craft??

I love the board game, loads of fun! Ive just played through the tutorial so far, but its amazing! Such a good adaptation of the physical game, its basically perfect. I cant believe how good the writing so far is as well.

I need to play it more!!

I should jump into some online games here pretty soon too.

Fair warning: it works like crap on older versions. I can't even get through the tutorial on my iPad 2, and I've heard similar problems for iPad 1's. But apparently they're working on a fix.

Saw that on BGG. fwiw works great on my iPad 3, so I guess that's the minimum requirement for now.

I don't like how little most purchasable apps/games sell on Android because that's my platform and low sales lead to not many games being ported. Good to hear this one will be though. 5-10 euros for a good digital board game is nothing, but seems like not many people agree with that at least on Android.

I don't know what the sales are like, but as to board-game availability it is definitely turning around. Lots of good multiplats coming out or already out. I love the cross-platform Playdek has, so too bad if Trucker doesn't. Gotta say I'm having a ton of fun with the live online play. I'm not sure why so many people play the turn-based. The live is amazing.

Bought an iPad Air from a fellow GAFer. May still pick up one of the new ones depending on how compelling those are a few weeks from now. Should get here by Friday so I'll definitely jump on next weekend for some truckin'.

I randomly got to play Vlaada (game designer) in a live game. It was stage 3 hardcore very fast. I've played a ton, but almost never with the hardcore deck. Let's just say next time I know to pretty much entirely load up with cannons when playing hardcore. :P I have a pretty good win rate (~85%) but that game was like 56 to 6 or something.

They recently added in-game chat as well. Really need to get around to digging in to this one. The campaign dialogue is pretty charming from what I've played.

Looks like an excellent digital implementation, not a huge fan of the original game though.

It'll be Twilight Struggle when it finally comes out next year. I'm so excited for that one I'm planning out the OT now...haven't done one since Civ 5.

So looking forward to that, TS is an amazing game but a pain in the arse to find opponents for
