1) Ping Pong: The Animation; 889 points; 101 votes

There are no 20 minute digressions about the different types of spin that someone can place on a ping pong ball, or long arcs interminably stretching out a single match over 5 episodes. It's a show that asks why people play sports in the first place. Some simply see it as a mechanical task, testing the limits of human kinetics. Some see it as a chance for redemption, to make up for failure in the past. Some see it as a way to seek out new challenges, to try to find a way to break out of the rut they find themselves in. Some see it as something they were simply born to do, through sheer passion for the sport. This is a show that celebrates the people who play ping pong, giving us several stories that we can root for because we can sympathize with each character's motives. That's what makes this show special and why it's, by far, my #1 show of the year.

It just does so many things so well. The story is simple, but executed perfectly. The characters have many layers to them and the show explores most of them. The actual ping pong is combines artistry and well animated movement to create great moments. The OST is great and has some of my favorite tracks of the year (Hero, Peco and China themes are amazing). This is a must watch show.

Yet Ping Pong is by far the best show this year as we view Taiyo Matsumoto's manga through the lens of Yuasa and his collaborators as they provide their own unique flair. It's diverse characters are perfectly balanced throughout 11 episodes as each goes through deeply personal struggles tied together naturally with ping pong. Their psychology is portrayed visually in creative ways instead of long tedious inner monologues. Wobbly lines of its stylized character art may not appeal to all but help mask production woes while providing a cool unique visual style. Art direction by Kevin Aymeric who also provided color scripts creates backgrounds with an organic sense of space. While music by Kensuke Ushio provides aural immersion, sets the mood and enhances the action as it should. Do yourself a favor and watch this.

Even setting aside its unique production, the show is classic fun through and through. It steers towards the episodic route with a large tilt towards comedy over drama, while succeeding at both in spades. It’s a spiraling, dissonant smattering of genres, styles— parodic and original— all strung together by a perverted Dandy and the misfit cast that surround him. Space Dandy is an excellent animation whose ilk I don’t expect to see again for some time, if at all.

What I first expected to be a solely goofy episodic sci-fi comedy with great production values turns out to be a sandbox for different artists to add their own personal flair to the show and ends up as one of the most creative anime in years as a result. While it's largely agreed that much of the show is fairly inconsistent, when the show manages to score a good episode it usually knocks it out of the park. There's so much variety to be seen in many of the episodes that it's hard to pick just one that truly represents the show's heart.

I'd love to see another show like this again that gives a lot of creative minds their opportunities to contribute their own personal style. It may be inconsistent but all of the good episodes combined more than make up for it. This is definitely a one of a kind.

You'll wish it doesn't end because it just keeps getting better and better, even at the end.

Interesting and educational, but never dull. Was definitely a contender for my #1 spot.

The children in this show were portrayed as actual children, not as mindless moe shit. It also helps that they were voiced by actual kids. Naru is one amazing and enjoyable character, seeing her play around and troll was amazing. Handa is a really great MC, just seeing him develop as a character was so good. Fuck, every character in this series were brilliant and having them interact with Handa was really enjoyable. There wasn't an instant where this series never made me feel good. The Opening and Ending are God tier.

What Sensei goes through the show is remarkably close to a lot of personal experiences I've had, and a character like Naru really takes the concept to a really high execution level. There are definitely many things wrong with KLK, but despite those shortcomings, I found the series entertaining from beginning to end. The animation was great in many episodes but also severely lackluster in others. The story did take itself a bit too seriously towards the end, but by that time I was along for the ride and still as hooked as ever. The music, composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, was superb, and not easily forgettable. The characters were endearing (some more than others) and made the show all the more fun. You could always count on the series to be full of action and great music, if nothing else.

This year's dark horse, Parasyte skillfully manages to weave together a coming of age story with a grotesque alien invasion type of scenario. Our main character is forced to experience more tragedy in a few months than most people do in their entire lives forcing a serious change in our protagonist's views on people (loved ones and hated ones alike). This is not an anime for people with weak stomachs. There is a lot of blood, gore and mutilation, but the reward for sitting through the well animated murder is a story where we have a rare chance to see humanity looking itself in the mirror via the main character.

Takahata brings his A game on the directing side and tells a tale of loss, love, growing up, and regret. He takes a single folklore story and transforms it into something greater than its origin. Through the movie, you can see how Takahata has matured despite already being a great director. Easily one of Ghibli's best works despite it being overshadowed by The Wind Rises.

Whether the film stands on its own, or whether it leads to more Madoka properties, Rebellion is a film demands your attention.

It's not Miyazaki's best movie, but I feel that it was a great note to end his career on (if his film-making career is in fact ending). As many people have said, it's a movie that seems to reflect the Miyazaki's own nature; I think that there's some of his personality to be found within Jiro. Speaking of Jiro, I'm not fond of either of his voice actors; I found Joesph Gordon Levitt to be very flat in the role, and Anno to be even flatter. However, I'd have to recommend giving the English dub a watch just for a surprising and charismatic performance from Werner Herzog.

So this was Kafkaian type of short but what really makes it work is the visual energy coming from all the different accomplished animators. You have Takeshi Honda, Shinya Ohira, Shinji Hashimoto, Hiroyuki Okiura, Masashi Ando and Toshiyuki Inoue all doing cuts for a 5 minute short.

I used to build the occasional WWII tank kit here and there when I was in college, and I'm not a hardcore wwII otaku but I do know the gear, played some strat games here and there, etc. so I thought I would hate this moe tank shit and dismissed it as garbage until i got bored earlier this year and checked it out and holy crap it fucking ruled. Since the show was from 2012 it's ineligible, but the OVA came out in summer so I'm listing it here. Lots of action, 5% girls being cute and 95% tanks being AWESOME and SHOOTING AT THINGS. The OVA was basically just a long GuP TV episode which pretty much meant it was the most awesome OVA of the year.

The Girls und Panzer OVA was similarly a fun return to the world of Girls und Panzer, even if it repeats a lot of what we've already seen in previous episodes. The way they wrapped up the Anzio arc and explained why they weren't watching the final battle was unnecessary, of course, but it was a cute way to wrap everything in a neat bow. Here's hoping the movie lives up to the series.

My best friend, and partner in the exploration of the mahou shoujo genre, was Hitokage. We conversed endlessly about his beloved Sailor Moon and Ojamajo Doremi, and when the topic of Precure, successor franchise to the aforementioned two, would come up, it was typically in the context of how much weaker and more conservative it is than its predecessors. Hito would rightfully detail each flaw and riff on every bad episode we watched while I would shamelessly engage in fanboy apologetics. It was always fun, even when we rarely agreed.

Happiness Charge was this year's Precure season, and Hito decided on a whim that it would be the first that he would watch weekly; for once, he immediately adored a season, and his instincts as a veteran mahou shoujo scholar led him to believe from the beginning that it held the potential to be the best. Every week we would watch it together, and as a Precure fan who had long sparred against his withering (and entirely on-point) criticisms, it was fascinating to see a critic become a fan, at least for one season. We even joked about how uncannily the co-protagonists mirrored our personalities.

After a strong early period for the show, my dissatisfaction with the season steadily increased while Hito remained optimistic. Ironically, for the first time we were in the position of him defending the show from my points of discontent. His response to my every concern was simply not to worry; that setbacks are temporary, the show would right itself. Even when I was engaging in the hyperbolic doomsaying that, in keeping with the self-aware fanboy shtick, I regularly carry on over after a bad Precure episode, he would genuinely reassure me that the overall arc of the show remained on track and it continued to meet his strict expectations for what constituted "good" mahou shoujo. His broad experience and keen analytical mind for entertainment led him to believe that it would be fine. Week after week, it went on like this.

And then, suddenly, well, you know.

I'll never be able to trust my own opinion on Happiness Charge because, from August onward, it has only served to remind me of horrifying, dumbfounding reality. I think that my dissatisfaction would have won out regardless, but that doesn't matter. He liked it, all that he saw of it.

If you're reading this, just take a minute to remember the man who pioneered NeoGAF's anime community, who shepherded it and nurtured its growth for well over a decade, and who was a friend to many of you and facilitator of countless other friendships between us here. What he loved must endure through us. Just go watch some Sailor Moon. Right now.

KLK placed 7th - honestly not too bad given all the backlash the show faced from the boards this year combined w/ being a mid-season crossover. Of course, Kill La Kill will always be #1 in my heart.

Space Dandy at #2 and Shirobako at 4th! Wow!

Overall I'm fairly pleased with this year's results.
