PS4 sales have surpassed 5.3 million units according to Sony (As of Feb 8)

I'm thinking Sony 60%, MS 35%, and Nintendo 5%.

I thought so too but now I don't know. Unless Titanfall is absolutely huge (I'm talking CoD huge), the X1 will continue to fade especially if Halo 5 gets pushed to next year. One game won't turn things around

There, I clarified:

Wii U sales "shipped to retailers, a lot of stock sitting on shelves":

1 month: December 31st, 2012: 3.06 million
4 months: March 31st, 2013: 3.45 million
7 months: June 30th, 2013: 3.61 million
10 months: September 30th, 2013: 3.91 million
13 months: December 30th, 2013: 5.86 million

PS4 sales "shipped to retailers, all of the stock sells through super-fast so it's essentially sell-through numbers":

1 day: November 16th, 2013: 1 million
2 weeks: December 1st, 2013: 2.1 million
1 month: December 28th, 2013: 4.2 million
3 months: February 8th, 2014: 5.3 million

The sales trajectory is ridiculous compared to Wii U.

I forgot how great of a launch WiiU had. Sales really dropped of a cliff.

Wow this is great. I thought that 5 million projection for march was a lot. Looks like they will surpass that by quite a bit. Impressive.

Will be doing my part when FFXV gets a release window.

Sony doesn't have exact sell-through numbers.

They're using a variety of metrics like NPD / GfK numbers, the amount of PS4s signed up for PSN, conversations with major retailers, and shipped numbers to come up with that number.

They're also assuming that stock is selling out so fast that shipped is essentially sell-through...which is correct.

I'd imagine it's even possible that they've shipped more than 5.3 million PS4s and just took off 100-200K and say that is a sell-through number and be pretty close anyway.

What prompted this press release? It seems so random.

Something tells me it has something to do with the Japanese launch. Maybe they think they can hype even more the maching (and attrack more JP devs) if they show that even even before the launch in Japan the console is been successful and they shoud join the party.

That's what i think anyway :p

Which means there could be 1 million+ X1s sitting on shelves (unless they didn't ship any more during Jan). Such demand!

Agreed. I just knew that if Microsoft didn't sell all 3.9 million Xbox One consoles that they shipped during their launch, that they would be in even more trouble once Black Friday & Christmas have ended.

How much is usually the error margin in such approximations?

I think it's fair enough to say PS4 looks set to be the dominant console this gen. I really hope Xbox one hangs on for a very strong and credible second place, so that if Sony try to take advantage of gamers, they are there to do to Sony what Sony did to them over the last year.

At the rate they're going it'll take a while before they sell dec stock off. My question is, does that mean they hold back shipments? Or do they continue to stuff warehouses? I'm not sure how that works

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
He probably already is starting. They started doing preliminary stuff for the PS4 in late 2007 according to Cerny.

No, Cerny is probably still busy getting blow jobs from Sony's executives.

In seriousness, I think they are still busy with post mortems.

They have more than just Halo and Titanfall. Plus we don't know what new features they could be thinking of for future updates alongside (inevitable) price drops.

Based on my prediction, if the total number of consoles sold this gen is 200 million (just using it as a figure) then that would put the PS4 at 130 million, Xbox One at 70 million, and Wii U at 10 million. I think that's reasonable. We'll see though...

People slanted Sony for not "innovating" (god i hate this term) or doing anything new, for not having a quirky, cutesy little alternative method of controlling and playing games like the Kinect and GamePad. After all this worked last time, so its bound to work again...right?

Turns out just making a game console with a few essential features is the way to go. Trying to replicate the original Wii is the trap both MS and Nintendo fell in and now they are selling products that are held back by the extra "special controller".

Kinect and GamePad are great..in theory. But in actual practice, neither company is using their special little devices. MS has barely made any Kinect games and Nintendo seems oblivious to what even to do with the extra screen.

Hardly. The Xbox One is doing fantastic sales wise and has yet the launch in several key territories.

Got to love the way some people are deluding themselves into thinking this. Never mind that none of those "key territories" have ever really favoured Xbox or anything, just blindly hope that things will change overnight.

Anyway, congrats Sony. You did an incredible job designing, promoting and launching the PS4. The fact that it hit 5.3 million while still experiencing widespread shortages is nothing short of insane.

While again acknowledging its mostly a worthless distinction, lets not assume how Sony derives their figures. We know, and they know, that at least in a few markets (Spain, Italy, Brazil) its not sold out, so shipped != sold exactly. Its pretty likely their shipped number is higher than 5.3M. Additionally there is lead-time from stock sold to retail then again to consumer.

That's incredible, especially since it's still out of stock so often.

Not 'especially since' . If it is out of stock regularly, that means they are selling everything they can make. And by most estimates that is around 1m a month. So this shouldn't be surprising.

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo

Scalpers bought up a huge amount of stock at launch. The stock got returned in 2013.

Returned to the retailer? So if I understand this correctly, Nintendo didn't have a good consumer sell-through in the first month. That is why there were few shipments sent through out 2013.

Starting working on Vita 2. Believe

Halo and Titanfall are their big system sellers. Stuff ike QD and SO is great but they won't be moving many consoles (see PS3). If TF can't do it, MS is screwed, significant price cut or self destruction

Ain't no way the X1 is hitting 70, unless you know something we don't? Their European and American marketshare is going to decrease significantly

Sell-through number? Impressive.

Should ship maybe 6.5-7M for the fiscal year with the Japanese launch and another month and a half of re-supplying other territories.

Nintendo had an awesome first month, but why did sales halt that much in 2013? Complete night and day compared to PS4.

Nintendo over-shipped, especially to Europe, so when sales stalled outside of the holiday launch period, retailers still had left over stock for much of the year.

...I highly doubt that Sony will go back into being arrogant again, especially considering their financial situation.

Yep. You really have to wonder what this number would look like if there was no shortage.

Xbox one is doing badly sales wise, and not reacting to overstocks in the US by launching more quickly in other territories is just leaving those markets open to be dominated by Sony even more

If that's the case then I Sony would have a good idea of their sell-through numbers since their shipped numbers would be sold-through as well.

I don't think SO can (too quirky/niche of a game) but QB definitely has the potential to do so based on how they are setting the game up to be. Again, we'll see though. We aren't even halfway into the first year of the gen.

I don't think they need as much headroom as last time as they turned the ship around in a major way (but at the same time, look at the Xbone hardware/os catastrophe). The PS4 is in many ways the 'ideal' computer architecture with an X86 hUMA APU with lots of compute power and one huge pool of high bandwidth memory (and storage). The simplicity of it's motherboard is beautiful.

The PS5 will in effect be a 2020 version of PS4 with focus on ultra-low-latencies for VR experiences.
