PS4 sales have surpassed 5.3 million units according to Sony (As of Feb 8)

I dont expect ps4 to hang on too well after the first few weeks but I do have some hope that it could be a late boomer in Japan if the sales stay strong enough in the west. That should get the big publishers like Capcom and whatnot start the transition for real and get pumping games. Add an pricedrop and I'm not too worried that ps4 has an important place in japan in the future, just hopefully Sony has a plan to make the console successful over there as well.

While again acknowledging its mostly a worthless distinction, lets not assume how Sony derives their figures. We know, and they know, that at least in a few markets (Spain, Italy, Brazil) its not sold out, so shipped != sold exactly. Its pretty likely their shipped number is higher than 5.3M. Additionally there is lead-time from stock sold to retail then again to consumer.

Well yeah, retail sales from Sony are their attempt at approximating the most exact estimates they can, so I assume they'd adjust for the lead-time and the few markets that aren't supply-constrained when calculating the 5.3 million unit figure.

I don't think SO can (too quirky/niche of a game) but QB definitely has the potential to do so based on how they are setting the game up to be. Again, we'll see though. We aren't even halfway into the first year of the gen.

No, even something like last of us didn't put PS3 ahead for that month. Let's be realistic. They are great quality games, but not quite big enough system sellers especially compared to Halo and GT

So is this really sony's late npd pr report? Iirc I don't think released one last week right?

But they told me consoles are dying !! How is that possible ?

it's still pretty early, but yeah, those people who were saying that the other two next gen consoles would start off slow like the wii u can eat their fucking crow.

good for sony, can't wait for the first two years of this gen goes by. that's when shit starts to pick up and games will be thrown at us.

Expected March LTDs from these numbers:

Wii U: 6.2m
PS4: 7.0m
Xbox One: 4.2m

Very impressive altogether.

So is it Peter Moore who will have to explain to the board of directors why EA aren't selling their new ip on the 7 million selling Sony console?

Last of Us also released at a time in which many people owned a PS3 too. If that game was a launch title then I think it would have pushed many into getting a console to play it.

We simply don't know yet. Got to see how things will play out.

They released a statement saying "PS4 is the best-selling console in the USA in January and it sold 2:1 the sales of the Xbox One."

We then learned that meant there were 271K PS4 sales and 141K Xbox One sales in January.

If they were already able to explain why they weren't selling on the 80 million selling Sony console, I don't think another 7 million needed additional explanation.

Is there any reason why their announcing this figure, for this specific time period, now? 5.3M and to Feb 8th are kind of arbitrary?

Is this the equivalent of announcing they passed the 5M milestone?

Well... just out of curiosity, how do you know they're taking the news hard?

While I don't know whether they are taking the news hard or not..I wouldn't be surprised if they are. From an outsiders perspective, they are in a bit of a tight spot

Their key markets are being re-taken by Playstation. Which means potential money lost in game/service/hardware sales, especially since they invested heavily in region specific features like the NFL stuff

Outside of these markets, they were kinda fked last gen too. Now Sony launched in more countries than them from the start so the lead will only increase this gen.

I believe the rumors about more pressure on the xbox division within MS to be true. This basically isn't a good look

I feel like they are banking a lot on Titanfall launch

I wouldn't be surprised if this was just bragging to show how well the console is selling.

Even if we don't have the exact numbers for how many WiiU were actually sold, it's safe to say that Sony beat them already since they are almost at the "shipped" number and there's literally stacks of WiiU available in every electronic stores around the world.

MS isn't hitting 4 million anytime soon. They're doing terrible in the US and even worse WW. Titanfall will provide a small boost but nothing too significant.

My prediction for end of March:

PS4: 6.8-7 million
X1: 3.6-3.7 million
Wii U: 5.9-6 million

5.3m+ as of Feb 8 2014, excellent. I don't think it's a stretch to predict 6m by the end of Feb with Japan's imminent launch. End of march? Maybe 6.5-7m. We're rapidly reaching 2:1 global ratio to Xbox.

Xbox is still hanging in there, though. They're not going to end up missing 3rd party titles. Any sales talk has nothing to do with people enjoying their systems/games.

Their last PR (January 8th) was 4.2 million units.

I assume they wanted to wait for NPD results so they could add that quip about PS4 being the best-selling console in the USA in January along with the 5.3 million.

I think it is reasonable to assume that they were compensated quite heavily. What remains to be seen is has it weakened its long term future? Considering that Titanfall is mp only, it's hard to say whether the hype for Titanfall 2 will be as high for a new platform. Bioshock 2 and mass effect 2 didn't seem to strike gold on the ps3.

sony killed it in their marketing.

they had my co-workers and family members who aren't the biggest gamers singing 'perfect day' for weeks lol. everyone knew this thing was coming out.

Because it is built on NBA Live engine. They dont have HD engine ready yet !!!. Madden, NBA nothing is ready for next gen. By the time Wii-2-U launches, EA will be all ready with shiny new HD tech engine for their sports franchises.

If that is true, it makes the decision not to 'can' the PC and 360 versions all the more perplexing.....

Yep surprise they didn't wait until after the Japan launch though.

We simply don't know yet. Got to see how things will play out.

Drop kinect and the price - coupled with some compelling exclusives and we have a ball game.

None of the above is optional. Throw in a free game for earlier adopters too. That what's needed.

MS new strategy should be to literally buying market share. Is it worth it? Capturing more of the market may be better than pure profit.
