I think Japan will surprise everyone. They've been following how well it is going in the west and getting the thirst, so my prediction is really otherworldy: 850k units in the first 24 hours. Every single console in Japan sold out.
No chance!
I'm not sure that Sony even has more than 300k PS4's for the japanese launch.
My prediction is, that they CAN sell 500k day one, but I'm not sure if they even have more than 300k units.

I thought I had too many games when I ditched my PS3. We're now fast heading to March and I'm starting to feel I have too many games for my PS4...
What happened to it having no games?

Are any of your games indies/multiplats/f2p? Those don't count for a variety of reasons I've heard.

Verendus stopped leading the charge of #PS4hasnogames and in his absence some games managed to slip in. It's a real travesty

You need some sleep. No, actually a lot of sleep.

You should stop listening to some fanboys ;)
There were A LOT of games available during launch.
And it's A LOT MORE now.

Most of those games exist on other platforms though - so despite them being the best versions they DONT ACTUALLY EXIST and you're simply imagining it. I think that's the logic.

It's even questionable if their "playing it straight to the gamers" was a no-brainer safe thing. To be honest it was actually a bit of a risk, because the assumption is/was that a new console launching these days has to knock it out of the park with anything and everything that makes it look like a media-friendly device. That a system simply could not sell to the masses based just on its games. Before all the fuck-ups, at a glance it seemed like Microsoft was actually taking the less-risky approach (ironically now it's evident they have, but for wholly different reasons not related to marketing). By the market's account, Sony had more to lose with the "for the gamers" push.

The problem there, was that as we now know, MS overestimated the eagerness of the casual segment to buy a next-gen system this early, and marginalized the core/hardcore who almost always are there exclusively for the first year or so. They either figured the casual market for consoles was unchanged from 2010 (when Wii fell off) or that Kinect garnered new loyal casual customers for them. Wrong on both fronts.

Sony was getting a lot of praise from the core/hardcore since February but there was no predicting if they'd be enough to sustain initial sales momentum. It's pretty evident now that the core market is still strong, and taking the traditional approach of starting narrow and spreading out the appeal down the line, is still the best way to go.

Agreed with this, though in the case of getting back casuals/non-gamers, I certainly don't think that the "All-in-One Entertainment Box" would easily make casuals/non-gamers go ga-ga over it like Microsoft thought it would. Tablets, Roku's, & even newly modeled Smart TV's, etc. have already taken over the living room, if anything.

And Microsoft certainly relied on Kinect more along with it's $500 million advertising just to get more Xbox 360 sales, & while PS Move didn't do so spectacular, PS3 managed to catch up to Xbox 360 in sales without even relying too much on PS Move, because

1.) Sony didn't forget about their core fans like Microsoft did, &

2.) Sony were bringing out more 1st/2nd party exclusives. Even Japanese 3rd party games were becoming exclusive on Playstation platforms. Keep in mind that the Xbox 360 had a LTD of 45+ million & that PS3 had a LTD of 41+ million or 42+ million before Kinect & PS Move officially came out.

I've been worried that there will be a peak and then a downfall in console sales...especially because this is a slower time of year. However, for Sony to be pumping out those numbers with only a handful of new PS4 games is great news. Just imagine how well they'll sell in a few months once we get a stronger influx of games. Congrats, Sony.

Yeah, and based on their track record once they get through the hurdle of finally getting out the first wave of games, their studios and the Japanese releases will only pick up the pace of releases as well, which should keep that desire going.

I think if Sony is smart they'll divert stock back to North America for March. If demand is still strong and could beat the Xbox One during Titanfall launch month, it would be a huge PR victory.

I think they should also, but I think they'll continue their worldwide split like they've been doing. Its going to be even more scarce with Japan in the mix.

Some people are too optimistic when it comes to the console market in Japan..
I would love to see the resurgence of it but I don't think it will happen. The PS4 is a westernized console in comparison with it's predecessors.
Those "consoles are d00med everywhere" sayers on the other hand...uhh..
What does that even mean? It drives on the right side of the road? It got its eyes rounded? It doesn't include a robot to wash your ass?

Hardware is hardware. There's no East/West to it. It's a box that follows instructions. Nothing more; nothing less.

I don't think 2pac started that , but that was a very well done example sir. Tupac should be 41 this year... he's the rapper we wanted, instead we got

a gay fish

I reckon 380k in the first 48 hours, getting up to 500k in two weeks.

Here in uk 250k in 48 hours but most prob in 1st day. Would have been more but supply. Could have done double probably in 48 hours and other few hundred k in week after. As whenever the ps4 has come in its gone largely.

Now japan is bigger but more into handhelds yes but also their home console too. Surely they could move a big amount. If the rumours of very large stock there are true.

On the subject of games, did anybody see todays champions league PS4 advert? It had Thief, Destiny and Infamous gameplay/release dates in it.

I'd make a thread, but I can't find the advert online.

CNN BREAKING NEWS

Cease fire reached in Independence Square as first shipments of next generation gaming console Xbox One, all in one gaming console, reaches the front lines of the riot.

Don't know why I turned to CNN when I read this but I did. When I tuned in I saw nothing about video games. I need sleep.

Besides Japan the PS4 only has a few more places to launch

Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro have been launched on 28.01.

In Croatia (and Slovenia AFAIK) pre-orders were not 100% fulfilled and complete March allocation is already soldout in advance. No idea about contigent after March, but since the new PS4 games will arrive in March/April, demand should continue.

Destiny beta will also be HUGE around here because all people I know are talking about it and waiting it to commence purchase.

Unlike with X360, not a single person I personally know bought or is interested in XboxOne. Few gaming stores have it (unofficially), but almost nothing is selling. XboxOne subforum on largest gaming portal is also a practical wasteland if actual owners are concerned.
