PopCap dodges whether PvZ: Garden Warfare is 1080p on Xbox One (update: it's 900p)

How the hell did they think that hitting 1080p native for the majority of games this gen wasn't a top priority? The old Xbox executives (Allard, Fries, et al) wouldn't have let this shit happen.

Really? When Allard was running the show there were tons of games that weren't running at 720P. Even Halo 3 ran at like 640P.

Developers will sacrifice resolution for performance, regardless of how well-designed the hardware is.

That was 8 years ago, a brand new "next-gen" shouldn't be getting 720, unlike an 8 year old machine.

MGS and COD are the only two multiplats that are 1080p vs. 720p that I know off. I'm expecting the next COD to be at least 900p on the Xbox One due to how much things blew up with the 720p news.

1080p vs. 900p you have AC4, and Thief. I think Watch_Dogs may fit into that too... we'll see though.

MGS, COD and BF4 are 60fps. That's factoring in to why XB1 versions are 720p. Same with KI, I'd bet.

So don't be surprised if this fall's COD is also 720p on XB1.

Any Xbox owner that expects 1080p is setting themselves up for disappointment. If performance is what you want, you aren't going to find it on XB1
That's fine with certain games and I don't think even the hardcore XboxOne crowd expects 1080p native with certain games any time soon, but to not be able to hit 1080p / 60 fps with Garden Warfare is downright embarrassing.

What's worse is, I always hoped there'd be a Gears collection, running at 1080/60FPS for X1 eventually... that does not seem likely now.

If they were left as is, but with a native res bump to 1080p and the frame-rate to 60, then it shouldn't be a problem. If they increase textures, geometry, lighting, etc, then it'd be an issue.

If Shinobi's tweets are anything to go by Watch dogs is 900p30fps on XB1/ 1080p30fps on PS4 as to be expected by ACIV tbh

Witcher however is supposedly 720p30fps on XB1 and 900p30fps on PS4 [with devs working to bump it up to 1080p]

Shinobi asked that this wasn't made into a thread btw ppl. so don't

Sports, racers, platformers, and (smaller) digital download only titles will more than likely stay at 1080p.

"AAA" action heavy games and shooters though are up in the air. Very few will be 1080p/60 FPS on both consoles. Most will probably have lower resolution on Xbox One if framerate is the same on both consoles (mostly 1080p vs. 900p; very few cases of 1080p vs. 720p). Same resolution on both consoles for those games would more than likely mean a lower framerate on Xbox One.

I think its very possible that as time goes on, Sports games will start dropping resolution on the One. The sports games we have now are all extremely cross-gen. They basically just upped the resolution and framerate of PS360 games.

Yes... I'm pretty sure they would all run in at least 900p if they were 30 FPS (and that BF4 would be 1080p on the PS4).

So don't be surprised if this fall's COD is also 720p on XB1.

I think MS will try and make sure that the game is at least 900p. It was stated that the kinect GPU reserve played a role and if things are suppose to change with that by this Fall then we may not see a repeat of it.

I don't know though... just speculation. Would love to see what's going on behind the scenes right now though.

True for some sports games. Not all though.

NBA 2K14 is 1080p and 60 FPS on both and definitely isn't a cross-gen port. Same is true for FIFA 14 though I had to see the game in person to tell... it's a very good looking game.

Madden will continue to build upon what's already there. EA doesn't want to go through the same problems they had with their sports games during the early part of the Xbox 360's life.

I doubt we'll get many drops in resolution and framerate in sports games aside from maybe NBA2K15 if they really try to push the envelope

Game design isn't really that demanding in most cases for sports games

Compared to PES, FIFA has really bad unnatural lighting and the animation framework they have is really starting to show its age. It could definitely be better. NBA 2k14 looks sex though.

I predicted many moons ago that a lot of devs would be thrown under the 'lazy dev' bus as this generation went on because of the PS4/XB1 discrepancy.

I didn't expect this many.

This seems way less common than what I remember seeing last gen. I think even the staunchest of XBOX fans are slowly realizing that either their tools are complete shit, or the hardware is, in fact, very underpowered.

I was playing Madden again last night on PS4 after a month hiatus. Man, that game looks so bad to me now. Barely looks better than the 360 version. I hope Tiburon offers a massive graphical upgrade next year.

Xbone is the new Wii U

Except 3rd parties will actually make games for it. :p

At least 900P is better than 720P, though would be nice for native 1080P.

Obviously lazy devs is idiotic, but PopCap have never made anything close to this technical scope before, right? They're not a new studio or anything, but going from their normal releases to this probably wasn't easy.

My point being that you can't say "Allard wouldn't have ever let this happen to the Xbox One!" when Allard was allowing even first party games to render at sub-HD resolutions on the 360.

Clearly he had no issues with sarificing resolution for detail or performace.

Yeah? Never played a PES game before. FIFA 14 is the first soccer game I've played in probably ten years or more (think FIFA 2002) so I wouldn't know the difference. I'm liking the game though.

Wrong, fifa 14 doesn't look next gen in any way, shape or form.

Not "fully next gen" but definitely better than just a "1080p port". Game looks great. Very crisp and clear. Much better looking than Madden.

I haven't played a FIFA game on last gen though.

I'm just surprised given the pretty simplistic visuals. Not my problem anyway since I'm in the PS4 camp but .. that's not an impressive showing.

An 8% GPU boost (if that's even accurate) is not going to push 50% more pixels.

Even if they keep the same engine and don't try and boost the fidelity at all from this year's version, there's not going to be enough raw horsepower increase to get that kind of a bump. Maybe it will be a Titanfall-esque 792p or something like that.

It looks no better than Fifa 12 on pc with the exception of the crowd and 3d grass which was in NCAA 12 on xbox 360/ps3. Port is a port.

I remember reading that they did actually get COD on the Xbox One to be in 1080p but the framerate not being 60 FPS was the main problem.

I think they could get the game to 60 FPS at 900p alongside the GPU update if it comes out in time. On top of that, games improve as the gen moves along and apparently this next COD will be focused on this (new) current gen and not be impacted by cross-gen development so we'll see. I'm not interested in COD but I am interested in seeing how things turn out.

They couldn't because they needed 8GB minimum for Apps/Snap/3OS/Kinect. DDR3 was the only cost effective option when designing it.

Just like they can't have their cake and eat it too. They chose this. Period. Stop the parity BS, because you didn't design and plan it for that.

Stop lying about the power and put up or shut up about that "vision" that was the reason in the first place. Visions are nice, but lets see implementations that make gamers go, "sure, I get it, its worth it". Execute!

Exactly. Microsoft should've thought long & hard about what kind of hardware to put inside the console. Whatever the specs that they put inside of the console will affect multiplatform games for the console in the long run. It's their fault for that.

Now they will have no choice but to suck it up & deal with the specs that they put inside of the system for the rest of this generation.

.

But Sony will be improving their development as well. There is a fundamental problem of less power on MS side. Math is always going to win out and the math is not really in favor of the X1.

Not the end of the world, but it is going to be a constant stain on MS for a lot of people. I think they can continue to dodge it, or they can just let it be and focus on what makes the X1 unique. Right now it's a lot of evasion which just makes it look kind of sad.

The next COD is supposedly launching with a new engine that is more demanding and visually pleasing. Although it possible for us to see a resolution increase, i think it will be unlikely. 900p is ~1.52 times > than 720p. A boost of 8% does not provided the necessary horse power.

As a Xbox fan, a bit of column a, a bit of column b.

Well, I hope that half-baked tools are the reason for 1080p vs. 720p at either 30 or 60 fps and that underpowered hardware will only limit to 1080p30 vs 900p30 or 900p60 vs 720p60 (the only graphics-heavy 1080p60 games on PS4 right now AFAIK are Ghosts and MGS V, whereas BF4 and Witcher are both aiming for 900p60 on that system.)

Do some people have images turned off? The sheer astonishment in some posts make it seem like they are imaging a game like the original 2D tower defense Plants Vs Zombies.

Sure it's not a visual power-house, but it's running on the very modern Frostbyte 3 engine. I too would be disappointed by the sub-native resolution, but the fact that they're prioritizing 60fps for a responsive action/shooter game is refreshing at least.

So XboxOne version is beta test? Cool, but still...900p :(

I don't think 900P will bother most people who play the game on XB1. I play BF4 on PC and PS4, and I can definitely notice the 900P-Ness of the PS4 version. How it looks blurrier than a true 1080P signal. However I'll readily admit since I grew up a PC gamer I'm a bit more hardcore about noticing these resolution differences. Also, the art style of Garden Warfare lends itself better to resolution scaling.
